Out with the old '15

Out with the old '15

This is the final day of this year, 2015. Kinda glad to see it go in many ways. Time to recap the year with Conan Obrien's top ten (not necessarily in order), Clint Eastwood style. *=Many are the same as last year. + is positive, - is negative (still bad).

The good:

10. I am still alive. +
9. Still a member of Runner's Depot! +
8. I completed (half of) the space coast marathon
7. I completed 4 halves within the 1st third of the year.
6. I owned my new Kia for 4 years, logging in 59k+ mostly from weekend racing!
5. Second time as a 2nd half pacer in a full marathon; 2 hr.
4. I was overall male winner in 4 races (2 in the double 5k)
3. 81 races completed
2. 45-49 age group Elite series 3rd place winner.
1. I was overall winner of double race 5k by winning the 3k and the 2k (after half time).

The bad:

10. Car problems, + my elantra still down hard.-
9. Increase in number of races in which I did not place.-
8. I had to settle for less a few times in some races that were winnable.-
7. Linda AD, I remain a victim of false promises and other emotional games -.
6. Recession (yes, they say it's getting better, but I don't notice it personally yet). -
5. Struggles to get under 23 in races, worse, never got under 21 (excluding short events)
4. Injuries and other set backs -.
3. Increase in race fees/expenditures
2. I failed to compete in some races due to heat exhaustion.
1. Cant get any sleep (parties and celebrations). -

The Ugly:

10. Miami Dolphins seasons end without playoffs -.
9. Extreme difficulty forming teams as a team captain -.
8. Had record low in races june and july (4 total).
7. Increase in insurance, office closures.
6. Credit card debt. -
5. I went to run a bike event but it was cancelled (rain)
4. struggle to race under 23
3. Lost (didn't place) in at least 13 races.-
2. The Miami heat didnt even appear in the NBA playoffs.
1. Had record low in total races (first time under 100 in 7 years).

Happy new year! See you next year.

Final weekend of 2015

Final weekend of 2015 is upon us!

Saturday agenda-race?

Not. No races were scheduled so therefore I did some training.  I pulled out the inlines and did a 10k.

Sunday agenda-race?

Races were lacking like cold weather in south Florida:

1. boca 5k/10k
2. double dash 5k

Last year, I did the former but this year, it conflicts with the latter. What do I do? I team up with Emily once again at the latter. To make a long story short, we won our division (co-ed). She had a stellar performance (3 oa female), while I was praying to do well enough not to hurt the team (internal conditions included injury). Teammate to teammate, she edged out hers while I was no match against mine, even on a good day. All's well that ends well. This was our final race of the year.

Merry Christmas!

Merry Christmas! obviously, no race today but that doesn't waive training. Unfortunately, I couldn't do the 12 miles of Christmas yesterday (noche Buena), but I did do a light workout today.

Hanukkah weekend

Hanukkah weekend is here, scheduled to end at sundown tomorrow. Also, it's a couple of days from the mid month crisis.

saturday agenda-race?

Here is what I considered for today:

1. classics by the sea 5k/10k
2. river run 5k
3. jingle bell run for arthritis 5k

Originally, I planned on the former but chose the latter (closest in proximity).

sunday agenda-race?

1. weston rotary half/5k
2. serena williams ultimate run quarter marathon/5k

Saturday, December 05, 2015

Hanukkah (pre) weekend

Hanukkah (pre) weekend is upon us!

Note: Wednesday was the boca pal mile. I had to pass due to illness.

Saturday agenda-race?

1. spartan race LA, FL
2. cca 5k
3. jingle bell run walk roll 5k
4. north creek explorer 5k
5. ymca jingle bell 5k
6. fragile x 5k
7. Miami dade college 5k
8. holiday family fun day 5k/1 mile
9. tri key west

Double header opportunity presented itself with 2 pm events (4 and 5).

Morning agenda-holiday family fun day 5k/1 mile

event 1-5k

The good: finished and got finisher medal
The bad: impossible to place (10 age)
The ugly: external conditions (weather was lots of rain) and internal conditions (knee, foot, sick)

event 2-mile

The good: finished and got finisher medal, partially dressed Santa
The bad: impossible to place (no age, only top 3 oa)
The ugly: external conditions (weather was lots of rain) and internal conditions (knee, foot, sick), Santa pants tore up in crotch area due to the rain

Evening agenda-ymca jingle bell 5k

The good: finished and got finisher medal, podium! after party had pizza
The bad: 2 age, award medal (generic style), after party lacked bananas and oranges
The ugly: external conditions (weather was lots of rain) and internal conditions (knee, foot, sick), my time not posted but I knew I was 2nd, shorted myself with a time (looks like I didn't beat Humberto)

Sunday agenda-race?

1. reggae marathon
2. palm beaches marathon
3. scrooge 10k
4. jcc 5k

You can automatically rule out the former (out of US). With 2 local events, scratch #3. I planned on the latter until I saw the drizzle. With the bad memory of what I went through the previous day, I chickened out and did a 15k long training run instead; I regretted that decision in hind sight as I would've placed.

Monday agenda-events

The good: Hanukkah begins
The bad: back to work from a nice vacation (minus the illness and injury)
The ugly: pearl harbor anniversary

Post thanksgiving weekend

Post thanksgiving weekend is upon us!

recap:

Thursday was thanksgiving
Friday was black

Saturday agenda-race?

Today is sometimes known as small business Saturday.

Here is what I considered for the last Saturday of this month:

1. spartan race Valencia
2. mr turkey tri
3. bull run 5k

You can automatically rule out the former (out of FL). I can do the next as a du otherwise I need a swimmer but passed because the next day is a long distance race that is a long distance from home. Therefore, I went to the latter. Based on injury and the aforementioned reason, I did this event as an easy training run but did help pace an older runner in the last mile (he won his age). Then headed up to the expo.

Sunday agenda-race?

Here is what I considered for the last Sunday of this month:

1. space coast marathon

guess which one I did?

I signed up for the marathon but due to injury, I did half of it by entering the worm hole. Sadly, I added insult to injury (blisters and time). I love the finishers medal and long sleeve tech shirt.

Count down:

4 days off
3 events completed
2 races
1 good time

upcoming:

cyber Monday and end of hurricane season (officially).

Thursday, November 26, 2015

Thanksgiving!

Happy Thanksgiving!

It seems you can find some kind of 'turkey' trot in just about every town; definitely cant list them all. Here's a list of those I considered for today:

1. habitat for humanity turkey run
2. Thanksgiving day 5k run
3. the gobbler 5k
4. run 4 the pies
5. jcc turkey trot
6. tamarac  turkey trot
7. ft lauderdale  turkey trot
8. baptist  turkey trot 5k/10k

The latter would make the most sense (closest in proximity) but I decided to travel to the west coast of FL to race on thanksgiving for the first time ever, ruling out all but the first 3. The former was closest in proximity to where I was staying but I chose the other because it was an inaugural.

Time for the Clint Eastwood synopsis:

The good: podium, finishers medal, weather (- wind)
The bad: wind, 2 loop course
The ugly: internal conditions, age group awards (bag), my bad time wasn't even posted, robbing me of award recognition & photo op.

This was a refreshing change to the norm, so look out next year!

Saturday, November 21, 2015

Pre thanksgiving weekend

Pre thanksgiving weekend has arrived.

Saturday agenda-race?

1. delray turkey trot
2. seed wine and food 5k
3. run for recovery 5k
4. mariners 5k
5. steps for healing 5k

The former was tried and true, along with #4 (keys), but in palm beach, as was #3. The next was an inaugural, normally what I choose but I got lazy and picked the latter, closest in proximity.

Nothing to write home about so I shall break it down Clint style:

The good: podium, 1 ag
The bad: course (twists & wet), medal
The ugly: conditions, both external (hot, humid) and internal (injury)

Sunday agenda-race?

1. PA marathon
2. US national half
3. battle frog
4. d2e half marathon
5. purple stride 5k
6. be a hero 5k
7. Naples fall half and 5k

You can automatically rule out the first 2 (out of FL). With enough running races, take out #3 (obstacle event). #4 was cancelled, therefore eliminated. I've done the remaining but chose the latter, despite being furthest in proximity.

Due to expenses, I settled for a 5k. Good choice since there was rain galore. Let me break it down Eastwood style:

The good: podium, 1 ag, top ten
The bad: course (2 loops), weather (rain)
The ugly: conditions, both external (rain, wet ground) and internal (injury)

Mid month crisis

Mid month crisis has arrived once again! Having trouble breaking 22; I never imagined not breaking 20 but that's my reality.

Saturday agenda-race?

Check out what I found for today:

1. spartan race PA, SC
2. temecula wine country half
3. coconut 5k
4. key Biscayne lighthouse 10k/5k
5. zoorun 5k
6. fantasy of lights 5k
7. st Augustine 5k
8. heroes for education 5k

You can automatically rule out the first 2 (out of FL). I had a chance for a double header (6=night race) but was worn out from extensive travel; only did a day race. I passed on the local races to travel nearby my lady (#3).

Allow me to break it down Clint style:

The good: podium, top ten men, cooler weather
The bad: the course had 2 loops, time
The ugly: travel to event, only 1 oa then 1 master, gm

Sunday agenda-race?

1. Brooklyn marathon
2. st Augustine half
3. 13.1 marathon
4. Zoe Loren 5k
5. Miami man tri/du

You can automatically rule out the former (out of FL). Due to expenses, I had to pass on the latter. Unfortunately, this year I was not among the chosen ones (I was snubbed by team this time, not even as a pacer) at #3, but you know I am going race somewhere. Anyway, first time doing #4.

I shall break it down Eastwood style:

The good: podium
The bad: not top ten, course had rising hills
The ugly: heat and humidity, only 1 oa then 1 master, gm, sgm

Veteran's day

Veteran's day is upon us! Allow me to thank all those who served honorably because as I always remind people, freedom is not free. Let us honor those also who paid the ultimate price so we can enjoy our freedoms.

I completed a rare hump day 5k in honor of veteran's day. Luckily, weather was nice.  However, a few things were just not right:

#1. was not a race (fun run) but wasn't stated
#2 therefore, no awards
#3 8 am start delayed nearly 15 min
#4 no clocks, not even at finish
#5 long drive from home to get to event
#6 almost didn't get to participate since I couldn't find it initially (spent 45 min prior searching with the general address provided) until a sign was place 7:15

First weekend of the month

First weekend of the month is here!

Friday agenda-Waterford 5k

A rare Friday night affair. I was forced to miss due to accident where I was hit by a woman trying to change lanes on my way home from work.

Saturday agenda-race!

Here's what I found for the first Saturday of the month:

1. spartan race NY, CA
2. Pensacola marathon
3. Disney wine and dine half
4. copper point brewing company 5k
5. sallarulo's race for champs 5k
6. steps for sos 5k
7. palmetto bay twilight color run
8. 5k race 4 awareness
9. Miami wild run 5k

You can automatically rule out the former (out of FL). With enough local races, remove the next 3. I got a flat, so #7 (night event) is out plus was not really a race. Hard to believe there were 3 events close to home; I picked the latter.

Let me sum it up Clint style:

The good: podium (1st age, top dozen)
The bad: heat, humidity, stride breaks
The ugly: time, all men beat by a female

Sunday agenda-race!

Here's what I found for this day:

1. big sur marathon
2. sun capital half and 5k
3. Flanagan's rockin' rib 10k
4. iRun 10k 5k
5. miracle walk and 5k run

You can automatically rule out the former (out of FL). I like all remaining but had to support the runners depot team race despite not my favorite distance.

I'll do this glass style:

Half full: completed first 10k of season, got finisher medal, swag bag
Half empty: time poor (internal and external (heat, humidity) conditions), no award

Halloween transition weekend

Halloween transition weekend is upon us! On top of that, it is daylight savings weekend; luckily, we gain an hour.

Saturday agenda-race?

Here's what I considered for the last day of the month:

1. spartan race TX
2. 5k hero run
3. spooktacular 5k
4. free and fearless 5k

You can automatically rule out the former (out of FL). I decided to pick tried and true, #3.

Let's break this down Clint style:

The good: finisher medals, categories, costumes that some wore
The bad: course (lots of turns), hot
The ugly: didn't place

It was Halloween; I wanted a treat (nice age award) but got a trick instead (no podium).

Sunday agenda-race?

Here's what I considered for the first day of the month:

1. NYC marathon
2. melanoma research 5k
3. Miami shores 5k
4. Cristina Gomez 5k

You can automatically rule out the former (out of FL); note: been there, done that. I also decided to pick tried and true, #3.

Let's break this down Eastwood style:

The good: podium, time improvement from previous day
The bad: no finisher medal, hot & humid once the sun rose, 2 loops
The ugly: 2nd age & beat by 2 females

It wasn't Halloween, but I did get a treat, podium!

distance driving race weekend

This was distance driving race weekend for me, as all events I did took over an hour to get to.

Saturday agenda-race!

Here is what I considered for this day:

1. spartan race TN
2. 13.1 Dallas
3. inspiration spirit run
4. stride away thru hideaway
5. every boob counts 5k
6. out run hunger 5k
7. Halloween half
8. hope 4 L.Y.F.E.

You can automatically rule out the first 2 (out of FL). By the grace of
God, I found a double header opportunity but had to travel far to do that.

Race 1- stride away thru hideaway

This was an hour and a half south of where I was staying (my girl). It was poorly organized, seemingly from the get go. No verbal instructions were given prior to the start and no lead cyclist to direct the race. The 2 fast kids where told to turn left at last minute while I tried to keep up with a pack. Neither I nor the runners around me knew the area so we were running blindly (including over 2 small bridges) until a certain point where somebody said 'I got 1.7 miles on my watch' so we turned around to head back from whence we came. I was aware that would be longer than a 5k. On the way back, I saw a sign (the only one during the run) indicating the race and an arrow, so I broke off from the pack I was now trailing, running solo in uncharted territory. I was beginning to fear I made a mistake until I finally saw the finish arch from the distance. I was directed to go through and being the first one to make it back, was declared the winner! Although a bit shorter than a 5k, it took me over 20 minutes; pleased with the trophy.

Race 2- inspiration spirit run

This was an hour and a half north of where I was staying (my girl). It was better organized as some instructions were given and a go cart to lead (they admitted that faster runners will outrun it). It started off nice on paved road but quickly became cross country style running along baseball fields and such. We had to do 2 small loops within a large loop of a 2 loop course. When the dust cleared, I got 2nd in age (if top 3 overall or a master slot, I would've been first) and got a medal. This was a Halloween themed race and I did dress to the occasion as a camouflage runner. By the grace of God, I won the male costume award (a nice plaque) as I was the fastest who dressed up.

Sunday agenda-race?

Here's what I found for this day:

1. biggest loser half/5k WA
2. marine corps marathon
3. cocoa beach half
4. fau homecoming 5k
5. 70.1 Miami
6. bal harbour 5k
7. wolverine 5k

You can automatically rule out the first 2 (out of FL). With enough local, I passed on #3. With no swimmer, forget about #5. #4 is the only evening race listed above, and when combined with one of the remaining, another double header opportunity was possible. Unfortunately, I hadn't fully recovered from the previous day so I missed the day events.

This one I shall break down Clint style:

The good: completed the 3rd race of the weekend, finisher medal
The bad: hot & humid
The ugly: didn't place (missed last slot by 20+ seconds), many females beat me.

Saturday, October 17, 2015

mid month crisis

Another mid month crisis has arrived. Thursday the actual day leading in to this weekend.

Saturday agenda-race?

Here is what i found:

1. spartan race AL, WA
2. the biggest loser off road WA
3. trick or trot trail 5k
4. schott 5k
5. light one's path 5k
6. ghost run 5k
7. race for the cure
8. pursuit of honor 5k

You can automatically rule out the first 2 (out of FL). With enough local races, I pass on #3. I chose the latter because it seemed to be closest in proximity. Unfortunately, I didn't race today but did the course pacing a friend (he got 2nd and is in my age cat). Dog tags were given to finishers.

Sunday agenda-race?

Check out whats going on this day:

1. Toronto marathon
2. Detroit marathon
3. the biggest loser half/5k
4. Halloween half key west
5. devil dog 5k
6. buddy run 5k
7. wellington 10 miler
8. rocktoberfest 10 miler

You can automatically rule out the first 3 (out of FL/US). With enough local races, I pass on #4. It's that time when I need to do distance races, so I skipped on 5 & 6; #4 was the furthest, so it's out. Normally, I do the latter and almost did but don't remember doing #7, so I picked that.

Due to finances, I resorted to plan B- enter the 5k but tack on mileage afterwards. Thankfully, the external conditions were decent. My internal conditions were manageable, enough that I was blessed to place and make the podium with a sub 22 (barely) time. Also, I was pleased there was a safety net (finisher medal for both events), removing some pressure from me.

Saturday, October 10, 2015

Columbus day weekend

Columbus day weekend is upon us!

So far, I have discovered the following:

1. school is out but work is not, therefore I will have to work harder
2. still feels like summer (external conditions)
3. still having internal (condition) issues

Saturday agenda-race?

Here's what I considered for today:

1. spartan race GA, PA
2. super hero 5k
3. AVDA race 4 hope 5k
4. parkland dash
5. burger king beach run

You can automatically rule out the former (out of FL). I passed on the latter because I didn't feel like running on sand when there are standard events available. Of the remaining, I did the one I haven't done before, #2.

With recent struggles, it's best to sum it up Clint style:

The good: podium (1st of the month), beat all women, finisher medal
The bad: humidity, some heat, travel, 3rd age
The ugly: internal conditions, time

Sunday agenda-race?

Here's what I considered for this day:

1. Chicago marathon
2. Staten island half
3. Columbus day du/tri
4. shark shuffle 5k
5. run 4 life 5k

You can automatically rule out the first 2 (out of FL). I considered #3, having done that as a relay last year. been there, done that with #4. The latter was kind of a no brainer since I am an organ donor champion at work. The one who I interface with was pleased to see me at the start line.

With recent struggles, it's best to sum it up Eastwood style:

The good: podium, position (1st age) & time better than previous day
The bad: more heat and humidity, no finishers medal
The ugly: internal conditions, time, beat by a female

Saturday, October 03, 2015

First weekend in October

First weekend in October is upon us!

Saturday agenda-race?

Here is what I considered for the first Saturday of the month:

1. spartan world championship CA
2. Atlanta 13.1
3. run to remember 5k
4. park fest 5k
5. crush games 5k

You can automatically rule out the first 2 (out of FL). The last 2 are in Miami, so I passed on #3 (in hindsight, big mistake). I chose the latter as it was closest in proximity. While external conditions were ok, the internal conditions took me down (indigestion plus ankle).

So here I go, Clint style:

The good: finished first race of month (medal to all who did that)
The bad: humidity and heat, no master title
The ugly: didn't place but if felt normal, would've

Sunday agenda-race?

Here is what I considered for the first Sunday of the month:

1. spartan world championship CA
2. Dunn's run 5k/miler
3. kb half
4. rock n run 5k

You can automatically rule out the former (out of FL). Initially, I planned on the latter (that would've been a good choice, hindsight), but elected to boost runners depot presence with #2.

Unfortunately, it was a dismal repeat of the previous but made worse with no finishers medal.

So here I go, Eastwood style:

The good: finished 2nd race of month, cooler start (73)
The bad: humidity still present as race progressed, drawbridge
The ugly: didn't place but if felt normal, would've

I feel like the dolphins, who also lost, starting off the month like they the season, losing. I came in 4th in both events, not more than 30 seconds off with a dismal time. This must not continue.

Saturday, September 26, 2015

Last weekend in September

Last weekend in September is upon us!

A lot happened prior:

1. first day of fall was on hump day
2. yom kippur also on Wednesday
3. the pope Francis made his rounds (cuba, DC, NY,  PA)

Saturday agenda-race?

Here's what I considered for the last Saturday of the month:

1. spartan race CA
2. ft desoto du/tri
3. cara cara 5k
4. triumph 5k
5. st Jude children's hospital 5k

You can automatically rule out the former (out of FL). With enough local race, eliminate the next 2. I chose the latter because it was closest in proximity.

This was a winnable race but due to internal conditions (mostly back injury), I forfeited many positions to wind up an age group winner. I shall sum it up Clint style:

The good: podium, top ten
The bad: humid, some heat, water puddles on course
The ugly: back, time (cost me the win)

Sunday agenda-race?

Here's what I considered for the last Sunday of the month:

1. spartan race CA
2. optime 5k

You can automatically rule out the former (out of FL). Guess which one I considered? Due to finances and injury, I used this as an easy training run, therefore it doesn't count as a race for me. It is the last event i did this month.

honorable mention

I got to see many teammates and friends  (some didn't race, like Spencer, Julie)

Saturday, September 19, 2015

Sep T M bray!

Sep T M bray! Thats how september sounds in spanish.

saturday agenda-race?

Check out the itenerary for today:

1. spartan race VT, NC
2. US air force marathon
3. friends of the poor 5k
4. run against violence 5k
5. miami childrens 5k

You can automatically rule out the first 2 (out of FL). I ended up going to the latter (closest in proximity). Unfortunately, I sustained a back injury yesterday so could not run. Instead, i walked and volunteered at the event.

sunday agenda-race?

1. biggest loser half/5k NV
2. your next step is the cure 5k
3. tropical triathlon
4. escape to miami tri

You can automatically rule out the former (out of FL). I ended up doing the latter because the swimmer requested that we do a relay. Check out the eastwood synopsis:

The good: we finished 2nd overall male team, 3rd overall all relay teams
The bad: hot, humid, parking, crowded with cyclists blocking
The ugly: only gold given out per division, therefore no podium for us.

Saturday, September 12, 2015

9/11 anniversary weekend is upon us! It is the 14th annual of that fateful day of terrorism. This weekend, many races are dedicated in honor of this day.

Friday-9/11 terrorist attack on the US.

Saturday agenda-race?

Here is what i considered for today:

1. Jeff Anna's firefighters 5k
2. ups 5k

The latter is closest in proximity but worst in categories (only 1 overall, then fall to age), therefore, i chose the former. In order to be my best for a relay, i chose to complete rather than compete. that means i did this for training (easy pace) then collect the finishers medal. It was a good thing, as the weather was brutally hot and humid.

Sunday agenda-race?

Here is what i considered for today:

1. biggest loser half WI
2. Boston 13.1
3. tunnels to towers 5k
4. mr trilogy bonus round du/tri

You can automatically rule out the first 2 (out of FL). Everyone expected me to be at #3 but i picked the latter by request of Tommy, swimmer of prior relays this year.

Now lets sum this up Clint style:

The good: top male relay, i had top bike time among male relays
The bad: my time on bike
The ugly: hot and humid, double loop on bike (2x the bridge)

When i completed the bike, i decided to let the swimmer run since i felt a little pain in left ankle and hes more rested. We were the top male relay and 3rd of all teams; good day at the 'office'.

closing on a high note, NFL football is back!

honorable mention

* this time, got to see George in action after a long layoff
* credit his appearance to Linda, who this time i also saw in action after a long layoff

Saturday, September 05, 2015

The first weekend of September

The first weekend of September is upon us! let the running season begin!

Saturday agenda-race?

Here is what i looked at today:

1. spartan race NY
2. wine country half CD
3. Disney land half
4. john clay 5k
5. save the jaguars 5k
6. king of the hill 5k

You can automatically rule out the first 3 (out of FL). With enough local races on my coast, scratch #4. I originally planned on #5 (shouldve stayed with that as i would've won my age cat) but due to inclement weather yesterday afternoon, chose the latter (closest in proximity). However, i didn't compete for speed but rather as training, doing anything from walking to running. Despite that, my time was good enough for 3 age; no award other finish.

Sunday agenda-race?

This is what i found for this day:

1. Chicago half
2. labor day du/tri
3. hero 5k

You can automatically rule out the former (out of FL). While i like the next one, i chose the latter to support the racing team (runners depot). I didn't expect to place & unfortunately, that came to fruition but I was close (4th), which did surprise me. I had a great first mile, but sadly, after being cut off by somebody who chose to walk around the turn around (i ended up following suit). i was unable to resume my pace, therefore i came up short; my first loss of the season.

Sunday agenda-race?

Nope, but happy labor day. I did find a race but it was on the west coast of FL. I did a nice bike ride instead before all the bad weather came forth.

Last weekend of august

Last weekend of august is upon us! A storm names erika was on its way, forcast to be a cat 1 hurricane but fortunately, was broken up. As for racing, the drought continues. saturday agenda-race? 1. spartan race MA, NC You can automatically rule out the former (out of FL). With no latter, i did a long overdue training run at my favorite spot in the past. sunday agenda-race? 1. oregon wine country half 2. cyclefest 3. summers end fun run You can automatically rule out the former (out of FL). I intended to do a double header (fun events) but due to inclement weather, i passed on #2 (i dont play with lightning). I also passed on the latter because of the following: 1. weather 2. distance 3. time of event Only thing i could was ok was i got in a training bike ride on a new course and I got to see both linda & chuck on the same day, just not the same time. This weekend closes out the month. I hope for better things next month. honorable mention Despite the aforementioned, on saturday, i had the honor of seeing and getting passed by jonathan & carol. I got to see terry before i started and after, him plus carol's hija, among others.

back to school!

back to school! In miami, it starts this monday. Most parents and some of us workers are happy for this.

saturday agenda-race?

Here's what i found for this day:

1.spartan race VA
2. seattle marathon
3. ft desoto du/tri
4. rampage 5k
5. dreyher park 5k

You can automatically rule out the first 2 (out of FL). I have done and like all of the remaining but I chose #4 to complete the 2015 elite series. Not a lot to write home about but check it out clint eastwood style:

The good: podium
The bad: 2nd place (good= I beat a runner by 1 second
The ugly: hot and humid,far

sunday agenda-race?

Here's what i found for this day:

Nothing! Today became a rest day.

FYI

monday marks first day of school and hurricane andrew anniversary.
tuesday marks anniversary of hurricane katrina.

Mid month crisis

Mid month crisis has arrived again! Only got in 2 races prior to this weekend as the drought continues.

Saturday agenda-race?

Here is what I could muster up for today:

1. Spartan race IL
2. cape 5k
3. cobra country 5k

You can automatically rule out the former (out of FL). I planned on the latter until I felt a slight injury in my left ankle. I decided it was best to pass on that cross country race to focus on the next day since my teammates expect the best performance from me. I ended up doing light training, especially since it began raining on me.

Sunday agenda-race?

1. Spartan race IL
2. pikes peak marathon
3. mr trilogy #3

You can automatically rule out the first 2 (out of FL). Therefore, the latter wins! It was a legendary day as I got tommy to swim again and fredy for the first time ever to bike on a relay. When the dust cleared, we got 2nd male sprint tri. Due to circumstances, the events were moved to a new venue- historic Virginia key beach (back in the days of segregation, the only beach in Miami where blacks were allowed).

Honorable mention

Since I ran into many friends from the past, this section is restored as homage. Congrats to those who raced. Glad I met up with them all. I apologize in advance as many will be missed.

* My swimmer was tommy meyer, who came through in a pinch at Huntington & this day after a tough person schedule.
* My cyclist was the legendary Fredrick franklin, who's been biking up a storm
* The wife of olympian Ronnie hallosie, dee, won her age group in the du
* last but not least, linda volunteered (as I), after giving blood the previous day

Saturday, August 08, 2015

Aw gust oh!

Aw gust oh! That's how august sounds in Spanish.

Saturday agenda-race?

Here's what I found for today:

1. Spartan race WA
2. kick off 5k

You can automatically rule out the former (out of FL). Guess which race I did?

This was originally just a fun run but this year, awards are offered. I still treated it as a fun run. Check it out eastwood style:

The good: podium
The bad: still hot and humid
The ugly: time & overall place (my fault since I didn't race hard)

Sunday agenda-race?

1. Spartan race CD

You can automatically rule out the former (out of US). With nothing remaining, I trained! I rolled first then jogged cross country course.

Saturday, August 01, 2015

First weekend in august

First weekend in august is upon us!

Saturday agenda-race?

1. Spartan race CD
2. siesta key du/tri

You can automatically rule out the former (out of USA). Naturally, I did the latter. Check it out clint style:

The good: top ten, won age
The bad: windy, mostly sand run course
The ugly: lost too much time in transition, medal

Sunday agenda-race?

1. biggest loser half IL

You can automatically rule out the former (out of FL). Well, nothing else to do but train. easy run & bike.

I feel blessed to begin the month on a good note.

Saturday, July 25, 2015

Christmas in july weekend

Christmas in july weekend is here! It is also the final weekend of the month.

Saturday agenda-race?

Merry Christmas in july! Don't seem like that when it comes to racing as there is largely a drought.

Here is what I found for this day:

1. beat the heat 5k
2. eagle lakes 5k
3. Hemmingway days sunset run

The latter is a night race that is very far (key west), so I passed on it. Normally, I would have done one of the remaining but I decided to focus my efforts toward the last day of the month. I did light to moderate training, mostly skating.

Sunday agenda-race?

1. biggest loser half VT
2. san Francisco marathon
3. huntingtons disease tri

You can automatically rule out the first 2 (out of FL). That means the latter is the only choice but that would require a swimmer; praise the Lord, I got one (tommy). Not ideal weather for the bike (wind and some rain).

The good: we won the male sprint relay
The bad: weather, I had to do double duty
The ugly: relay results never posted on site, ticket results had his name only + no splits w averages

The numbers prove I didn't have my best day but on the other hand, of all teams that competed in the sprint:

3. we had the 3rd fastest overall time
2. I had the 2nd best bike time
1. I was the fastest runner

This was a good way to close out the month. Ill take it as a Christmas gift from the almighty.

Saturday, July 18, 2015

Rain and race drought

Rain and race drought is upon us! However, I think there are more days of some rain than for racing.

Saturday agenda-race?

1. Spartan race PA

You can automatically rule out the former (out of FL). Since that's all I found, obviously, I didn't race. pulled out my skates and rolled for an hour.

Sunday agenda-race?

1. rnr Chicago half
2. napa to sonoma wine country half
3. Spartan race CD
4. trilogy #2

You can automatically rule out the first 3 (out of FL/USA). Due to finances, I didn't compete at the latter but I made a cameo appearance. I did some training (short run and 10 mile bike) while there.

Saturday, July 11, 2015

Who lee oh!

Who lee oh! That's how to pronounce july in Spanish. 2 things to hate about summer:

1. super hot and humid
2. hardly any races

Saturday agenda-race?

1. Spartan race PA
2. fun fit 5k challenge

You can automatically rule out the former (out of FL). I planned on the latter but after a tough week, including illness, I overslept and missed it. I trained on my bike instead.

Sunday agenda-race?

1. Spartan race PA
2. American sprint du/tri

You can automatically rule out the former (out of FL).  Well, not only did I not feel up to the challenge based on illness regarding the latter (located on the west side of FL), I had to take my girl back to the bus station on my side of FL. I pulled out the inlines and did some cross training.

Saturday, July 04, 2015

Independence weekend

Independence weekend is upon us! Thankfully, I began yesterday (state observes day prior or after if holiday fall on a weekend).

Saturday agenda-race!

Happy 4th! 'Tons' of races today. Here is what I considered:

1. boiler maker
2. peach tree 10k
3. moes firecracker 5k
4. firecracker 5k
5. star spangled 5k
6. Weston 5k
7. mr independence day du/tri
8. sole runners j45k

You can automatically rule out the first 2 (out of FL). Normally, I would've done the latter (inaugural plus closest to home) but with yesterday off, I went up to lady's house, eliminating any race on my coast. Of the remaining, only 3 & 4 haven't been done before; I took the latter.

Nothing to write home about, so I break it down clint style:

The good: podium, 1 ag, weather a bit cooler than miami
The bad: still a bit hot, not in top 40, beat by 2 women
The ugly: not under 22, travel

Sunday agenda-race?

Not ! I couldn't find any. I ran about 5 easy miles on the west side. It was much hotter and more humid.

Saturday, June 27, 2015

Final weekend of june

Final weekend of june is upon us!

Saturday agenda-race?

Here is what I considered for the last Saturday of june:

1. napa valley half
2. Spartan race MN, UT
3. siesta key tri/du
4. down2earth cross country run 10k/5k
5. foam glow 5k
6. freedom 5k

You can automatically rule out the first 2 (out of FL). I passed on the next (furthest race), #4 (grass, dirt, etc) and #5 is out because it is a fun run. Therefore the latter won but unfortunately, a sudden injury occurred (left hip) so I completed it as an easy training run.

Sunday agenda-race?

Here is what I considered for the last Sunday of june:

1.  down2earth trail run half/10k/5k
2.  down 2 nite 5k trail run

Not much to choose from. With having enough trouble with normal turf, I passed on all and sadly, close out the month with only 2 races completed. That was the bad news. The good news is placing 100%. I pray next month, although with few events, will be much better.

Saturday, June 20, 2015

Father's day weekend

Father's day weekend is upon us! sunday is the recognized day but also officially begins summer on the calendar.

Saturday agenda-race!

Here is what I found for the last day of spring:

1. grandma's marathon
2. biggest loser half IL
3. run for the sea
4. sugden stride 5k

You can automatically rule out the first 2 (out of FL). The next, although on the same coast as I, was a 4 miler, so I chose the latter. Nothing to write home about, so clint, take it away:

The good: podium,5 deep age awards
The bad: hot and humid, medal, distance
The ugly: double dip bumped me to 4th age

Sunday agenda-race?

Here is what I found for the first day of summer:

1. vancouver half
2. fathers day 5k
3. mr trilogy #1

You can automatically rule out the former (out of FL). The next seemed to be a fun run and if I struggled in a 5k, definitely not ready for the latter, so I opted to train on my inlines.

Sunday, June 14, 2015

Mid month crisis

Mid month crisis has arrived once again! Well, close enough anyway.

Saturday agenda-race?

Here's what I found for this day:

1. rnr seattle marathon
2. cpr 5k
3. nw express track and field

You can automatically rule out the former (out of FL). The latter actually began on Friday and goes through sunday. It was held at a new venue (broward). if my lady wasn't in town, i may have considered it. I actually signed up for the remainder but it proved to be too far of a drive, therefore I settled for a light workout with my lady.

Sunday agenda-race?

Here's what I dug up for this day:

1. muck rabbit trail run 11k/6k

So far, this is a nightmare weekend for a runner like me. I had to pass on this race (the only one I found) because I couldn't guarantee I could complete the event and get my lady to the train station in time, not to mention the morning drive; more training.

Saturday, June 06, 2015

First weekend (June)

First weekend (June) is upon us!

Saturday agenda-race!

Here is what I found on the first Saturday of the month:

1. Chicago 13.1 marathon
2. Spartan race NY, CA
3. muttsquerade 5k
4. fight 4 air climb

You can automatically rule out the first 2 (out of FL). The latter was the closest one, but not a 5k (stairs). Therefore, I  did the remaining event.

Back to clint style:

The good: podium
The bad: hot, humid, 3 age (I wished for 1st)
The ugly: fell out after finished and was forced against will in ambulance to hospital with threat of arrest (cop was present).

Sunday agenda-race?

Here is what I found on the first Sunday of the month:

1. the biggest loser half/5k PA
2. run for the ribbons 5k

You can automatically rule out the former (out of FL). Guess what I did? Wrong! I actually decided not to race due to the medical mishap the previous day.

Saturday, May 30, 2015

Final weekend (May)

Final weekend (May) is upon us!

Saturday agenda-race!

Here is what I found on the last Saturday of the month:

1. VA wine country half
2. Spartan race NY, OH
3. singer island du/tri
4. chocolate sundae 5k
5. hero 5k
6. zoo 5k

You can automatically rule out the first 2 (out of FL). The last 2 were the closest since the remaining where in palm beach. The latter was THE closest one, therefore my choice.

I have bitter/sweet memories here, mostly sweet, but unfortunately, my last visit here is where I had a health issue. Even then, it was sweet since I was the first overall male; tainted victory since a woman beat me. It didn't look good at the start since it began raining and lasted over a half hour, the already late start (8) was delayed another 15 minutes, now the ground was all wet and as the sun came out during the race, the humidity and heat increased. By the grace of God, I lead the entire race (although a kid caught up by mile 1 then dropped) and won the entire race; nobody in front (other than rick on the lead bike)! While I got the glory, I was disappointed with the generic medal that showed various Olympic events and a torch but the flip side was totally blank; no idea what event it was for. My medal was exactly the same as an age group winner.

Sunday agenda-race?

Here is what I found on the last Sunday of the month:

1. rnr san diego marathon
2. Spartan race OH
3. the biggest loser half/5k PA
4. twilight 5k

You can automatically rule out the first 3 (out of FL). Guess what I did? Wrong! I actually decided not to race but did go for race walk training.

Saturday, May 23, 2015

Memorial day weekend

Memorial day weekend is upon us! While most are out partying or at beach, don't forget that you are able to do that through the sacrifice of those soldiers who paid the ultimate price.

Saturday agenda-race?

Here is what I found for today:

1. mosquito 10k
2. soldier rush obstacle 5k
3. down 2 earth cross country 5k

Can you believe I didn't race? Its true. The former was on the west coast where there's brush fire. I am having enough trouble with standard races so forget about one with obstacles. The latter is similar to an upcoming race, so its better I rest for that. I pulled out my inlines for the first time since ..??

Sunday agenda-race!

1. Ottawa marathon
2. ives 5k
3. Miami man speedway edition

You can automatically rule out the former (out of FL/US). I am not ready for another half iron duathlon and without a swimmer, I pass on the latter. Guess what I did?

This is the upcoming cross country race. Last year was 2 loops, this year improved to only 1. It got to be hot and humid. By the grace of God, I won my age group and got a nice trophy despite being misdirected, losing some time.

Monday agenda-race!

Happy memorial day! While there are plenty of events held this day, I only considered the following:

1. judicata 5k
2. pineapple 5k
3. memorial day classic 5k
4. Weston memorial day 5k

I passed on the former since it's located far on the west side of FL. The next was far but on same coast. I usually do the latter but chose the remaining.

Back to the clint eastwood synopsis:

The good: podium, finisher pie
The bad: heat, humidity, wind, no finisher medal, 2 sharp turnarounds
The ugly: barely made the podium (3 ag), time

Saturday, May 16, 2015

My O!

My O! That's how this month sounds in Spanish.

Saturday agenda-race!

Here is what I had considered for today:

1. Spartan race TX, IN
2. Brooklyn half
3. keys 100 ultra
4. eric patrie 5k
5. covenant house 5k
6. tour of gables 5k

You can automatically rule out the first 2 (out of FL). Since I'm not on any team and not ready for an ultra, I pass on the next one. The latter is the most logical choice (closest in proximity) but of the remaining, I picked the only one I don't remember doing-#4.

I shall sum it up clint eastwood style:

The good: finished
The bad: no finisher medal, hot and humid
The ugly: time, didn't place

On this day, I am considered a zero since I returned the way I came, empty handed (no hardware).

You can automatically rule out the first 2 (out of FL).

Sunday agenda-race?

1. rnr Portland half
2. double race 15k/5k
3. fiu triathlon

You can automatically rule out the former (out of FL). Without a swimmer, I passed on the latter. Can you guess what I did?

This race is dubbed as the only event with a half time; that proved to be interesting. Due to cost, I passed on the main event (10+5k challenge) and at the last moment picked the less costly (yep, still pricey) 3+2k challenge. Despite feeling tired & lousy to the point I considered walking prior to the turnaround, the Lord blessed me by allowing me to win both legs, and thus, the overall challenge title. I received a high quality trophy (real marble base), unlike any in my 22+ year athletic career.

The good:  overall 5k champ (I won 2 races that equal that distance)
The bad: hot and humid
The ugly: entry fee.

After this accomplishment, I am considered a hero, having overcome the prior loss, current conditions & leaving with hardware. Redemption is sweet.

Sunday, May 10, 2015

Mother's day weekend

Mother's day weekend is upon us!

Saturday agenda-race!

Here's what I found for this day:

1. Spartan race NY, MT, TX
2. santa Barbara wine country marathon
3. hammerhead bike ride 100/50k
4. miles for moffitt
5. live like jake 5k
6. women for women 10k/5k
7. hugs for hope 5k
8. run for the roses 5k

You can automatically rule out the first 2 (out of FL). With enough standard races, strike #3. #6 is not for my type. Although no race in Miami, I actually picked the latter because its closest in proximity.

In this race, it's often called 'catch them if you can' because the ladies get a 5 minute head start. This was held at a new venue but old in that many races are run at charnow park. Last time I ran here, I faded at the finish. Unfortunately, I barely made it under 22 but the good news is that I was able to win age group and that time was used on our repeat victory to place in the odd couple category. Despite my lousy time, we (Emily was my partner again) were the 2nd best team of them all. The finishers medal was good also.

Sunday agenda-race?

1. Spartan race MT, TX
2. laCroix mother's day 5k

You can automatically rule out the former (out of FL). Guess where I went?

Due to injury and expense, I did not race this but I did complete the event. Afterwards, off to see my parents, especially mom!

Saturday, May 02, 2015

Cinco de Mayo weekend

Cinco de Mayo weekend actually starts before the celebrated day, which will be on Tuesday, but I need to name this weekend after something.

Saturday agenda-race!

Here's what I considered for the first saturday of May:

1. Spartan race CO
2. run4kayla 5k
3. big cardio 5k
4. glory run 5k

You can automatically rule out the former (out of FL). With enough local races, I pass on the next one. I wimped out and took the later-closest in proximity.

Considering my recent struggles, nothing really to write home about. Check it out clint style:

The good: finishers medal
The bad: time, course alteration (track under construction)
The ugly: internal problems, didn't place.

Sunday agenda-race!

Here's what I considered for the first sunday of May:

1. lake Avalon tri
2. tri Miami (& du)
3. westglades 5k
4. wings for life world run
5. walk for wishes 5k
6. sponsor an athlete 5k

With enough local races, I pass on the former. I am still in the run mode, so I skipped the next one. The last 2 were closest in proximity and would be the most logical choice.

Same as previous day (internal issues); check it out out eastwood style:

The good: finishers medal (if pre-reg), top ten & podium
The bad:  time, 2nd master (would be first if no health issues)
The ugly: course alteration (last half mile over grass)

I went from zero to hero over this weekend.

Saturday, April 25, 2015

Last weekend of the month

Last weekend of the month is upon us! Prior to today, earth day was Wednesday, corporate run Miami was Thursday, arbor day was yesterday. This weekend is a runner's dream with so many events to choose from.

Saturday agenda-race!

Here's what I have planned for the last Saturday of the month:

1. country music marathon TN
2. Kentucky derby marathon
3. meek and mighty
4. Sarasota jrotc 5k
5. stomp out child abuse 5k/10k
6. race for sight 5k
7. heroes in recovery 6k
8. kidney pump 5k
9. father o'reilly 5k
10. run wild in the park 5k
11. hero 5k
12. doral 5k

You can automatically rule out the first 2 (out of FL). With enough local races, I passed on the next 2. I had a chance for a double header (#8 was a night race) but considering I felt so bad that I almost didn't race at all, that's out. Runner's depot put on #9, so that became my choice.

Considering both internal and external conditions I've been struggling with, nothing home to write about. I shall sum it up clint style:

The good: podium, time better than last week
The bad: external condition (hot and humid), 3 ag
The ugly: time, internal condition

Sunday agenda-race!

My dad's birthday is this day!

Here's what I have planned for the last Sunday of the month:

1. rnr Madrid marathon
2. big sur marathon CA
3. pro football hall of fame marathon
4. biggest loser half marathon
5. st anthonys triathlon
6. run from the rays 5k
7. motion for the ocean 5k
8. pill box 5k
9. rugged runner challenge
10. Cleveland clinic 5k
11. oleta park trail run 5k/10k/half
12. run fur fun XC 5k

You can automatically rule out the first 4 (out of FL/US). Without a swimmer, eliminate the next one. With enough normal races, I passed on #9 and #11.  Based on start time and proximity, I chose #8 to race and the latter as training.

Same as previous day, so check it out eastwood style:

The good: podium, time better (barely) than previous day, within dirty dozen
The bad: external condition (more hot and humid),
The ugly: time, internal condition

Saturday, April 18, 2015

Post birthday weekend

Post birthday weekend has arrived; my first weekend competing as a senior in my age group.

Saturday agenda-race!

Here's what I have on the docket for the first Saturday after my birthday:

1. Spartan race NV, NJ
2. 7 mile bridge run
3. for the love of children 5k
4. strides for education 5k
5. DTR endurance challenge 50k, 13.1, 10k, 5k
6.la roootaaa regataaa 4.2/8.4 m
7. ficpa 1040 5k/10k

You can automatically rule out the former (out of FL). The latter 2 were closest in proximity-#6 was not a run, so no. #7 is but I did another instead. I passed on the endurance & bridge run since im having trouble with the 5ks. Of the remaining, I picked #4. Unfortunately, the nightmare of my last race continued today.

The good: podium (I won my age cat)
The bad: late start (8), heat and humidity
The ugly: time (internal conditions)

Sunday agenda-race!

Here's what I have on the docket for the first Sunday after my birthday:

1. south beach triathlon
2. race to end homelessness 5k.

Considering that I don't swim, guess which one I did? Unfortunately, the nightmare of my last race continued but worse.

The good: podium (3r in my age cat)
The bad: late start (8), heat and humidity worse
The ugly: time (internal conditions), passed out

Monday agenda-boston marathon

I will not be racing that this year but I had the honor in my past. Good luck to all who participate.

Saturday, April 11, 2015

Passover over/pre birthday weekend

Passover over/pre birthday weekend is here! The holy days began last weekend with good Friday, Passover and easter, but now ends tonight. This is my last weekend under my current age before advancing to senior in my age category the day prior to tax deadline day.

Saturday agenda-race!

This is what I considered for the last Saturday prior to my special day:

1. Spartan race Carolinas
2. rayz awareness 5k
3. singer island 13.1
4. rooneys 5k
5. runaway 5k trail run
6. shake, rattle and run 5k
7. Clewiston sugar festival 5k
8. river walk 5 mile/k run
9. human run

You can automatically rule out the former (out of FL). With enough local races, I passed on #2 and #7. I already did a half last week so I'm ready for another, especially with it being hotter and with plans t race the next day; scratch #3. With plenty of standard races, skip #5 plus on top of that, a late start race. The latter would be interesting (run until caught) but I didn't do it. Of the remaining, I been there, done that, so I chose the inaugural #6.

Check this out clint style:

The good: top ten, podium,  was top master
The bad: no master title offered (1 age)
The ugly: hot and humid

Sunday agenda-race!

This is what I considered for the last Sunday prior to my special day:

1. rnr Raleigh marathon/half
2. Hollywood half
3. krista-marie 5k
4. thin mint 5k
5. gumbo limbo 10k
6. down 2 earth 5k/10k

You can automatically rule out the first 2 (out of FL). I am not ready for any 10k. I wimped out and chose the latter due to proximity.

Check this out clint style:

The good: overall male winner
The bad: 2 oa (yep, you guessed it), generic medal
The ugly: lost a lot of time (almost race) due to heat issues, hotter and more humid

Saturday, April 04, 2015

Easter weekend

Easter weekend is upon us! Today was jampacked with races since no one dares to plan one on easter sunday. Note: corporate run in ft Lauderdale preceded this weekend.

Saturday agenda-race!

Here is what I had under consideration:

1. harbor heights half/5k
2. run for the turtles
3. run like a bunny 5k
4. egg hunt du/tri
5. caba 5k
6. Fairchild palms 5k

The most logical would be the latter (closest in proximity), with #5 next closest. Both the former and the latter are considered inaugurals. The latter is first time this millennium. The former as a half, even though the 5k is ninth annual; I never been to that location ever. Therefore, the furthest away was my choice.

Nothing to write home about so let me break it down clint eastwood style:

The good: broke 2 hours, decent start weather
The bad: began on dirt road and had a sharp turn around
The ugly: no age groups

Sunday agenda-race?

Not! It is the day to remember that our greatest gift from God was resurrected! Praise the Lord for Jesus Christ! I did a short recovery 'run' that consisted largely of walking and drills to reset the legs.

Palm sunday weekend

Palm sunday weekend is upon us! It is also the last weekend of March.

Saturday agenda-race!

This is what I have planned for the last Saturday of the month:

1. texas half
2. race for women's wellness half/5k

You can automatically rule out the former (out of FL). Guess which one I did?

Other than the wind, weather was perfect (low to mid 60), course was flat with no turn arounds, just like I like (external conditions great). Unfortunately, my internal conditions were not. I felt kind of sick and knee hurt. The poor/lack of training reflected during the race, making it harder to run. Thankfully, by the grace of God, I still got 2nd in my age, just with a slower time. I love the fact that finisher medals were given out, even in the 5k!

Sunday agenda-race!

This is what I have planned for the last Sunday of the month:

1. rnr san Francisco half
2. tri cocoa village
3. FL brain cancer 5k
4. USATF FL 5k championship
5. trisickle 5k
6. Utriathlon

You can automatically rule out the former (out of FL). Without a swimmer, the latter and #2 is out. Of the remaining, I picked the closest in proximity-#5.

A number of things went wrong.

1. flyer says start is at 7. running forum said 7:30. online has 8. Well, it was the latter but delayed
2. no race aps
3. no tshirt unless you pay extra, only a generic bib #
4. course. cylist took leaders on path (wrong) while the rest went the other way (no signage). I was 4th but dropped behind trailing pack. Both packs converge from different directions to the finish.

Although the pack did a shorter course, hence the record times, I still managed to win my age group (ten year). My overall position was naturally affected; happy I got a generic medal.

Spring is here!

Spring is here! Officially, as of yesterday but in florida, it felt like it began weeks ago.

Saturday agenda-race!

Here's what I found for the first Saturday of spring:

1. rnr marathon TX
2. GA marathon
3. support our troops 5k/10k
4. first Brazilian church 5k
5. running with danny 5k
6. the color rave glow run 5k

You can automatically rule out the first 2 (out of FL). The latter would have provided for a double header in terms of participation but it was a fun run, so I passed on that. I picked #5 because it was the first time being held at Hialeah park but not an inaugural. However, the course was, so rick (time keeper) kept saying that the winner will set the course record and everybody will have course PRs.

Check this out clint style:

The good: podium, top ten
The bad: no master, no finisher medal, ten year age
The ugly: late start, course (caused 2 mishaps) with last mile on dirt

Sunday agenda-race!

Here's what I found for the first Sunday of spring:

1. FL beach halfathon/5k
2. run walk 4 paws 5k
3. kendras kisses 5k
4. tribute to the military 5k
5. greenway bike festival

With enough local events, I passed on the former and with enough running events, the latter. Definitely skipped the latter (ride, not race). I should've tried #2 (don't remember doing it) but went tried and true. #4 would be the most logical (closest in proximity) but the venue was changed. I decided to keep the streak of attendance with the remainder.

The good: podium
The bad: 2nd age, medal instead of trophy, not top dozen
The ugly: course (5 hills), humidity, internal condition, 2 females in front

I wound up leaving injured and feeling worse than after a marathon; think due to illness & lack of sleep (loud music past midnight).

Mid month crisis (March)

Mid month crisis (March) is upon us! Yesterday, was Friday, the 13th. Tuesday will be st. Patrick's day, which means the weekend falls between the bad and the good (luck of the irish).

Saturday agenda-race!

Here is what I considered for today:

1. Spartan race HI
2. rnr marathon DC
3. st lucie shark shuffle 5k
4. shamrock ten miler/5k
5. miracle walk 5k
6. Daniel's dash
7. ft Lauderdale shamrock run

You can automatically rule out the first 2 (out of FL). With enough local events, I passed on the third as well. I am definitely not ready for ten miles. I ended up picking #5 because at work, I am an organ donor champion and this race supported that cause.

Time for the clint synopsis:

The good: podium, trophy
The bad: 2nd ( I like to win), no finisher medals
The ugly: top 3 only, regardless of sex

Sunday agenda-race!

1.  rnr marathon mexico city
2. Sarasota half
3. las olas triathlon
4. run with the rabbi 5k
5. race for the kids 5k
6. Florida's paradise 5k
7. palm 100 ultras

You can automatically rule out the former (out of US). With enough local events, I passed on the second as well.Without a swimmer, eliminate #3. Without a partner, I wont dare the latter (barely in shape for that). Of the remaining, I picked the inaugural (#6).

Time for the eastwood synopsis:

The good: podium, finisher medals
The bad: no master, only top overall
The ugly: was first till mile 1 when the sand portion began, outsprinted last .5 by 2 'kids'.

Daylight savings weekend

Daylight savings weekend is upon us! Unfortunately, we must spring forward and lose an hour!

Friday agenda-Spartan cruise Bahamas

Obviously, I passed on this one for 2 reasons. First, out of US. Second, had to work.

Saturday agenda-race!

Here's what I saw for the last day before the time change:

1. Spartan race GA
2. run for compassion 5k
3. spring sprint 5k
4. springfest 5k/12k
5. st patricks 10k
6. march against hunger 5k
7. the biggest loser 5k/10k Miami
8. MS bike breakaway (to) key largo
9. coconut 5k
10. run like bella 5k

You can automatically rule out the former-out of FL. I passed on 3 and 4, the next furthest. I didn't need the rest with the last 2 being in Miami. I wimped out and took the latter because it was the closest in proximity.

The good: I was 3 oa
The bad: I was given top age, wind, windy course
The ugly: age categories- only 1 overall and age group (ten year)

Sunday agenda-race!

Here's what I saw for the first day after the time change:

1. charlotte county senior games 5k and 10k cycle
2. I care, I cure, I run 5k
3. voices against brain cancer 5k
4. cooper city Richardson 5k
5. MS bike breakaway (from) key largo
6. hunger walk and 5k run

With enough local events, I didn't need the former. I also passed on the breakaway (2 day cycling event). Although the furthest away, I picked the latter since its an inaugural. It almost became a disaster as I had to wait for a train to pass in mid race, approaching second loop. By the grace of God, I was able to retain 2nd overall despite that. Although the time appears worse (due to the delay) than the previous day, I actually ran better.

Transition weekend

Transition weekend is upon us!

Saturday agenda-race!

Here's what I had planned on the last day of this month:

1. race for the arts 5k
2. fight for air climb
3. hearts at work 5k
4. 5k on the runway
5. battle frog
6. festival 5k
7. heart and sole glow run

All events within the tri county area, with the former as the furthest north and the latter as the furthest south plus also a night event, enabling a double header. However, the latter is not a race, so it's ruled out. With enough running events, I passed on #2 and #5. I 'wimped out' and chose the closest in proximity (la penultima).

This time I will use the glass synopsis:

Half full: won age group, made the bakers dozen, sub 18 time, with first mile sub 5!
Half empty: course was short (reason why time so fast), medal, warm-hot + windy

Sunday agenda-race

Here's what I had planned on the first day of march:

1. Excalibur ten miler
2. hooters to hooters half
3. total health 5k
4. jafco in my sneakers 5k
5. bayfront challenge tri
6. 13.1 half
7. carnival Miami 5k

Can you believe that almost half of the events are in Miami? With that in mind, I considered the last 3. Without a swimmer, #5 is out. I have done the latter in the past as a walk or as an 8k running, but don't remember doing the 5k at the 13.1 so that's what I chose.

It was a windy day, with a few turns and a sharp turn around; not my favorite. There was nothing home to write about but I was pleased to make the podium (2nd age), and top ten, earning a plaque, my first award in that series. On second thought, maybe that is something to write home about.

Last full weekend of the month

Last full weekend of the month is upon us!

Saturday agenda-race!

Today is like runner's heaven:

1. run in the gardens 5k
2. sunmart 5k
3. lakes of the meadow 5k
4. safewalk 5k
5. race for faith 5k/10k
6. riverbend green 5k
7. 5k for a better day
8. funky fun run on 13th st
9. everglades ultra
10. Edison festival of lights
11. gasparilla 15k/5k

Believe it or not, most of the above are local (tri county area), so I definitely passed on the last 3. Logically speaking, the closest in proximity (2,3,4) would make the most sense but the Lord made it possible for a double header in broward. I rarely turn those down. Please note, wind was a factor in both events.

Event #1-5k for a better day

Clint eastwood synopsis:

The good: podium, top ten, unique award
The bad: 2nd master (missed top by 10+ seconds)
The ugly: course (turns)

Event #2-funky fun run on 13th st

Clint eastwood synopsis:

The good: podium, top ten
The bad: address on flyer, would be top master (4 oa) except for bad place categories
The ugly: only 1 oa & given 3rd (age cat 40+)

Sunday agenda-race!

Here's what I found for this day:

1. Tokyo marathon
2. gasparilla half and various other distances
3. tour de broward
4. emb(race) 5k/10k/half
5. 5k for kids

You can automatically rule out the former (out of US). The latter was closest in proximity but poorest in categories (top 2 oa and ten year age). With local events, skip the second also. Due to my lack of long runs, I chose #4. On top of that, it was an inaugural. My goal was simple, under 2 hours, then collect my finishers medal; my time would be impossible for the podium. My goal was met but to my surprise and by the grace of God, I placed 2nd in my age group!

Valentine's weekend

Valentine's weekend is upon us (good)! Yesterday was Friday the 13th (bad). This also marks the middle of the month!

Saturday agenda-race!

This is what I planned today:

1. run wild 5k
2. ft Lauderdale Valentine's day 5k
3. barrier free 5k

The former was the best choice since it was closest in proximity but I picked the latter because I don't remember ever doing it. The weather was quite cold but luckily, no real wind. This was my tune up race. Now for the clint eastwood synopsis:

The good: podium!
The bad: 2nd (I like to win), a little too cold, distance to race, generic medal
The ugly: not top ten, women got past me

Sunday agenda-race!

Here's what I planned for this day:

1. A1A marathon/half

Guess which one I did? There comes a time when you should give back (to the community); this was that day. My contribution was to do the 2nd half of the 4 hour marathon pacing. It was even colder this day, no wind at beginning but picked up during the run. I crossed the finish on point + or - seconds. I helped to make the day of many in the group, along with the 'relay' starter. I loved the ten year anniversary medal.

The first full weekend of February

The first full weekend of February is upon us! Last week began also black history month. Have you ever noticed that we get the shortest month of the year while Hispanics get one of the longest?

Saturday agenda-race!

Here's what I found for today:

1. ragnar relay FL
2. drawn to the beach 5k
3. walk 4 wishes 5k
4. healthy heart 5k/10k
5. sari center 5k
6. st Thomas alumni fun run
7. dolphin cycling challenge day 1

The former actually began yesterday. Usually done by a team of a dozen people but there are some ultra marathon maniacs out there. In any case, I passed on that. Surprisingly, all events are local, with some closer than others. Teammate brian sharkey did a double with #2 and #3 but unfortunately, I missed that op by taking #4, an inaugural race (not the venue).

Now for the clint eastwood synopsis:

The good: podium and top ten, finisher wood
The bad: course with rolling hills, 2nd (always want to win), beat by a woman
The ugly: wind, missed 1st by 6 secs

Sunday agenda-race!

Not as many as the last agenda but nevertheless:

1. dolphin cycling challenge day 2 (5k)
2. run thru central park
3. eagle 5k
4. madd dash 5k
5. surfside beach 5k

Surprisingly, all events are local, with some closer than others. I was compelled to support #2 because it is a club event. To my expectations and dismay, I would not place.

It's glass time:

Half full: beat the last race's time, weather great (cool with no wind)
Half empty: no where near top 3 age nor ten overall, beat by more than a few females

I just kept thinking, like Sherman, 'I am just here so I wont get fined (penalized)'.

Super bowl weekend

Super bowl weekend is upon us! It is also a transition weekend.

Saturday agenda-race!

Here is what I found for the last day of January:

1. Melbourne 8k/5k
2. race for the cure
3. Hoofin it for hope 5k
4. black light run

I passed on the former since there are enough local races. I could've done the latter for a double but it is not a race (fun only), so good bye to that. Neither is the second unless you are fast like Ronnie; strike that one, leaving the remaining.

It was an inaugural and a rare one in homestead. In all actuality, it seemed more like the Redlands and was at a winery. The course was straight forward and a bit boring but was different. Clint eastwood break down:

The good: top ten and podium, cold weather
The bad: some wind, generic medal, 8 am start
The ugly: entry fee, parking (grass/dirt), bathroom closed 20 till start

Sunday agenda-race!

Here is what I found for the first day of February:

1. Melbourne marathon/half
2. butterfly 5k
3. bay harbor island 5k

I passed on the former since there are enough local races. As for the remaining, I been to both, therefore, I pick the latter (closest in proximity).

The good: top ten and podium, cool weather
The bad: generic medal, 8 am start, very windy, lost on master, beat by a fast girl
The ugly: very windy, course (grated bridge), incorrect time (didn't match clock)

Ironically, I got the same overall position (6) on both days and same podium slot (first age).

Final full weekend of the month

Final full weekend of the month is here!

Saturday agenda-race!

Today was the day to race:

1. Spartan SoCal super
2. cypress sprint 5k
3. ribeye 5k
4. rotary dash for a difference 5k
5. tropical 5k

You can automatically rule out the former (out of FL). The latter is the usual and most sensible choice (closest in proximity) but I found a chance for a double header. Of the remaining, I passed on #4.

Morning race- cypress sprint 5k

Weather was lousy. It rained up until the start so the ground was wet and (flat) bridge sections slippery. On top of that, very windy. I almost did the walk but didn't want to be under those conditions for a longer period of time. In hindsight, a good move as the top 2 registered walkers ran, with the top faster than I can run, let alone walk. By the grace of God, I made the dirty dozen and won my age group; that was the glass half full. The glass half empty was my medal was not produced so I left the race without the hardware I earned (said to be mailed).

Afternoon race-ribeye 5k

The good news is the ground was dry. The change was more heat (still nice though) and a lot more wind. Let's break it down clint style:

The good: time and position improved from earlier race
The bad: battery died and almost didn't make this race, no master title
The ugly: generic dog tag as award, had to beg for tech shirt, post race (mostly pay for food)

Sunday agenda-race!

1. Spartan SoCal sprint
2. rnr new Orleans marathon
3. Ocala marathon
4. suncoast half marathon
5. florida challenge half
6. Miami marathon/half

You can automatically rule out the first 2 (out of FL). The latter is the usual and most sensible choice (closest in proximity) but I was out of town and couldn't get back in time, therefore I skipped all races. This became a day of rest. Can you believe that?

Saturday, January 17, 2015

Dr. Martin Luther King jr

Dr. Martin Luther King jr (MLK) weekend is upon us! He is the only other hero I have behind Jesus Christ.

Saturday agenda-race!

Here's what I found 4 today:

1. komen race 4 the cure Bahamas
2. ringling bridge run
3. Honda classic 5k
4. brandons run
5. Miramar-pines 5k/10k

You can automatically rule out the former (out of FL/US). With enough local races, I passed on the next one as well. I wound up doing #3, the furthest of the remaining. It turned out to be a challenging course with rolling hills & turns, one was a bit steep. Let me break it down clint style:

The good: made the podium, finishers medals, sub 21
The bad: 2 ag, wet ground (fog)
The ugly: the course, travel to race

Sunday agenda-race!

1. Bahamas marathon
2. Bermuda marathon
3. key west half
4.  naples half
5. davie road race
6. gift of life 5k

You can automatically rule out the former (out of FL/US). Naples has always been my tradition, so that eliminates everything else. I finished under 1:50, best in a long time but left with blisters and tightness.

Monday agenda-MLK 5k

Yep, a rare weekday race on an important holiday. This year, I thought sure I would lose as for the first time I can remember, juan Yanes, a top racewalker signed up to race. At the start, he immediately passed me and maintained a lead through 2 miles. After that, amazingly, he began to fade. I debated whether or not to pass him but I felt good with my pace so I continued. I didn't go at max since I figured this may be some type of strategy. By the grace of God, I did like the seahawks by coming from behind to win. It was history for me as I had never beaten him before ever. This miracle blessing seemed impossible since this was among my worst times plus I was still suffering from tightness & injury from the half.

E nair o

E nair o, that's how you pronounce January in Spanish.

Saturday agenda-race!

This is my selection for today:

1. WDW half marathon
2. memorial 5k
3. seahawk sprint for music 5k
4. fllipany 5k/10k
5. 5k for kids
6. deans run 5k

Due to expenses, I had to pass on the former, even though among my favorites. With enough local races, strike out the next 2. The latter is the closest in proximity but offers no awards; bump that. One day I may do #4 (heard rumors of sand) but I chose #5.

Cold weather, with some wind after start. Nothing to write home about but here we go, clint style:

The good: first age, in top dozen, time better than last
The bad: ten year cat,  generic medal
The ugly: just missed breaking 21

Sunday agenda-race!

Here's what I found for this day:

1. WDW marathon
2. vista view 360
3. flamingo 5 (miler/k)
4. 5k superhero classic

Weather was warmer but kept cool due to drizzling and clouds; I didn't care for the wet ground. When the gun went off, I wasn't even in the top dozen but by the grace of God, I finished well. I heard the course was short but doesn't change my overall position. Check out the clint synopsis:

The good: top master, in top dozen, time better than last
The bad: only 1 overall & master,  generic medal
The ugly: weather

Afterwards, I visited #2 to cheer on fellow teammates. It is here where I got caught in bad rain.

First weekend of the year

First weekend of the year is upon us!

Saturday agenda-race?

Here's what I found for the first Saturday of the year:

1. save the panther 5k

Guess which one I did?

Time for my first clint eastwood synopsis of the year:

The good: podium (1st of 45-49)!, time better than inaugural race of the year
The bad: course (twisty & narrow), hot, humid, wind, not under 21, beat by 2 women
The ugly: got 3rd age bc of ten year age cat, drive to event

Sunday agenda-race?

Here's what I found for the first Sunday of the year:

1. Deleon springs half
2. viva la margarita 5k

Guess which one I did?

None of the above. I was on the fence regarding the former and almost went but opted against the drive (4+ hours) and entry fees. Instead, I went inline skating, first of the year and in a long time. I got in 12 miles.

In with the new '15

In with the new '15
Happy new year! In with the new '15. Wishing you all an active, injury free athletic year. I want to put all the bad experiences of last year behind and  move on to hopefully better ones this year. I shall cherish the positive memories of last year, but unfortunately, be compelled to deal with any lingering situations this year. Traditionally, we make resolutions, and like bones, they may be broken. My top ten list will include the usual, some will be continuations, some may be possible and some may be improbable, but it doesn't hurt to dream. Come to think of it, didn't Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr do that? Obama is certainly thankful.

Top ten resolutions for this year (not necessarily in order):

1. Continued athletic success, especially with racing and competition.
2. Health.
3. Wealth.
4. Wisdom.
5. Employment.
6. Training (stepped up).
7. Change.
8. Teamwork.
9. Diet.
10. Travel.

Now it's time to expound on those resolutions.

1. Last year, I did 102 races, which is less than the previous year. This was largely due to health issues, plus the usual relationship issues, forcing me to divert my energies elsewhere; I'd prefer to be with someone. Although I'd like to match or beat my highest total of races in a single year, my main goal is continuation; march of last year marked 2 decades + 3 years since I began competing.
2. To do the aforementioned, I must maintain good health, largely through fitness and diet. That means I still won't smoke or drink, and naturally, do my best to avoid injury and illness.
3. This resolution has always failed but you never know; this might be the year. Maybe I'll get rich the easy way by winning in the powerball or the hard way with some breakthrough opportunity.
4. Hopefully, as I progress, this continues to improve. I made it this far through trial and error,  experiences. Thus far, 2 out of 3 (healthy, wealthy and wise) has been my case.
5. Since the quick fix (lottery) has thus far never panned out, I'll need to keep my job to survive.
6. To get the glory (race win), one must train. I plan to up the ante with quality workouts, such as speed work and long runs, which I have been notorious for missing.
7. Obama's slogan. He is the change America needs. However, I too, must utilize this. I revolve to make some adjustments in my normal scheme of things. Like Rick Scott says, 'let's get to work'.
8. I want to continue doing relays, both as a team captain and participant. In 2008, I eliminated most series participation, in lieu of individual events because I sacrificed too many running races that I loved the previous year. I will likely adhere to this resolution this year (limit to 2 series or less). However, I want to increase the number of individual relay races.
9. Continue and hopefully improve upon my nutritional regimen, such as my no meat diet.
10. I will travel as necessary, meaning doing only races that have some significance or purpose to me. I'll avoid just racing to race if it is far.

Today's agenda-1st race of the year

I usually do the run, walk, crawl 5k. I always picked the middle option because it is extremely difficult to find a racewalk with awards. However, after I got ripped off (the guy given the title had jogged throughout and many witnessed that but the race director bought his bogus explanation that he learned a new walk technique) my overall win 2 years ago, with the insult to injury being that the cheater was put on a pedestal, I promised myself that if another opportunity arose to do something else, I'll take that; This was also that year.

I had 3 choices this year:

1. 8 am-run, walk, crawl 5k
2. 9 am-resolution 5k
3. 10 am-commitment day 5k

I did the latter last year in lieu of the former, so this year I picked the middle.

Conditions were very humid (100). Thankfully, It was mostly cloudy, which did keep some of the heat down; virtually no wind. I had a good start for the first mile but took some loss in the 2nd but still within my range. However, the humidity proved too much in the final mile as I struggled so bad, I actually stopped to walk a bit (legs felt heavy and I had some respiration issues). Thankfully, they had several categories. By the grace of God, I won my age group and fortunately, I got my first award of the year! I have only the finishers medal to show since a gift certificate is the award.

FYI

You may have noticed much of this blog seemed like a carbon copy of the previous year's post. Testament of how life can be similar yet so different.
