Out with the old '14

Out with the old '14

This is the final day of this year, 2014. Kinda glad to see it go in many ways. Time to recap the year with Conan Obrien's top ten (not necessarily in order), Clint Eastwood style. *=Many are the same as last year. + is positive, - is negative (still bad).

The good:

10. I am still alive. +
9. Still a member of Runner's Depot! +
8. I completed the space coast marathon, beating last year by over 2 hours
7. I completed 4 halves within the 1st quarter of the year.+
6. I owned my new Kia for 3 years, logging in 42k+ mostly from weekend racing!
5. First time as a 2nd half pacer in a full marathon; 2 hr.
4. Jon W and I ranked in athlink's top 20 most frequent racing, only 2 in all of FL with achievement.
3. 102 races completed, 7 years in a row with 100+ events.
2. 45-49 age group Elite series runner up.
1. The big 3 (LeBron James, Dwayne Wayne and Chris Bosh), and the Miami heat appear in the NBA championship again 4 times in a row!+

The bad:

10. Car problems, this time my elantra went down hard.-
9. Increase in number of races in which I did not place.-
8. I had to settle for 2nd overall a few times in some races that were winnable.-
7. Linda AD, I remain a victim of false promises and other emotional games -.
6. Recession (yes, they say it's getting better, but I don't notice it personally yet). -
5. Struggles to get under 21 in races, worse, never got under 19 (excluding short events)
4. Injuries and other set backs -.
3. Increase in race fees/expenditures
2. I failed to complete 2 races due to heat exhaustion.
1. Cant get any sleep (parties and celebrations). -

The Ugly:

10. Miami Dolphins seasons end without playoffs -.
9. Extreme difficulty forming teams as a team captain -.
8. August had record low in races (5).
7. No raise plus increase in insurance, office closures.
6. Credit card debt. -
5. I went to run like a bunny but race was cancelled (rain)
4. struggle to race under 21
3. Lost (didn't place) in at least 16 races (personal worst).-
2.  the Miami heat appear in the NBA championship and lost
1. only 1 overall individual win but never given an award.

Happy new year! See you next year.

Last weekend of the year!

Last weekend of the year!

Saturday agenda-race!

Only found a couple for the last Saturday of the month:

1. s florida fair 5k
2. zo's winter groove 5k

Even though the latter was closer and an inaugural, I picked the tried and true. I don't really care for the late start but by the grace God, I did pretty good. I almost broke 21 and I got 3rd master. I remember only getting the finishers medal in previous races.

Sunday agenda-race!

Only found a few for the last Sunday of the month:

1. biggest loser half/5k FL
2. Jacksonville marathon
3. boca 5k/10k

The latter was a no brainer to me since the former is in the panhandle & the other near Georgia. Despite having 2 distances, the 5k was a high quality and quantity field. By the grace God, I squeaked into the last slot of my age, with the best time in 2+ months. I went in thinking I'd get just the finishers medal but was determined to get a time better than yesterday since I was oh so close; praise the Lord, it came to fruition.

Merry Christmas!

Merry Christmas! obviously, no race today but that doesn't waive training. Unfortunately, I couldn't do the 12 miles of Christmas yesterday (noche Buena), but I did do a light workout today

Winter wonderland!

Winter wonderland! Today marks the official first day of winter! However my weekend began yesterday.

Saturday agenda-race!

Here's what I considered for the last day of autumn:

1. holiday classic 5k/10k
2. frosty 5k
3. knights of charity 10k
4. marco island 5 miler
5. jingle bell 5k

Most races were on the west coast. Since #2 was sold out weeks in advance, I had to choose an alternative. #3 was it until I found the former at last moment. I really didn't want to run more than a 5k prior to an endurance event, so that became my choice. In hind sight, I am glad I didn't pick the latter, even though closest in proximity because the cropped the 2 toughest age groups together (45-49 and 50-54), giving me virtually no chance to place. The one I locked out of, I heard had over 800 participants. Mine wasn't too shabby either. The field was fast and the course challenging (steep bridge out and back, plus 2 hills and many turns)

Let me break it down clint eastwood style:

The good: finishers medal, podium (3 ag)
The bad: 3 ag, no where near top ten, late start (although in my favor this time)
The ugly: course, time

Sunday agenda-race!

Here's what I considered for the first day of winter:

1. Christmas sprint du/tri
2. jingle bell jog (ft laud)
3. lace it up on the levee 5k/10k

I might as well stay on theme, so I took the former (furthest from me). I did my final multi sport event of the year. I did a lot better than expect, considering all that's been happening to me. Check this out clint eastwood style:

The good: finishers medal, podium (1 ag), top ten
The bad: only 1 overall and master (I was 3rd)
The ugly: start (late plus most, including me, off guard with random call)

Saturday, December 13, 2014

12 13 14!

12 13 14! That's today's date & will never be repeated!

Saturday agenda-race?

Here's what I found for today:

1. classics by the sea 5k/10k
2. river run 5k
3. north creek explorer
4. Seminole panther prowl 10k
5. edna Shalala 5k
6.  jingle bell run ft lauderdale
7.  jingle bell run

I did #4 earlier this year and enjoyed but I have the opportunity for a rare triple header, ruling that out. The former was too far, so I picked the next one, even though #6 maybe slightly closer. Even though I like #3, I opted for the latter since I haven't done it before and is closer to home.

Sunday agenda-race?

Here's what I found for this day:

1. 6 flags fiesta TX
2. powerman duathlon
3. jingle bell run
4. rotary run for tomorrow 5k/half
5. serena Williams ultimate run 5k, 1/4 marathon

You can automatically rule out the former (out of FL). While I like all of the remaining, I couldn't double or triple today. I know I didn't do #2 but not ready for that at this time. I didn't remember doing the middle event so off I went.

First weekend in December

First weekend in December is upon us!

Saturday agenda-race!

Check out my selection for the first Saturday of the month:

1. Spartan race CA
2. reggae marathon
3. jingle bell jog 5k
4. cca 5k
5. voice of love jingle bell jog
6. run for education 5k
7. tap n run
8. run for optimism 5k
9. 5k holiday 5k

You can automatically rule out the first 2 (out of FL/US). La penultima (7) was a fun run, so its out. Incredibly, there were 4 races in my county (scratch 3,4)! I couldn't race them all but the choice was easy because the latter was put on my spencer's law firm! Also, it was an inaugural and his first as race director. Due to his popularity, he had the support of a high quality field, usually my demise. I set in my mind to break 21, even though I would likely not place. However, by the grace of God, I had my fastest time in months (under 21 and needed it), enabling me to win my age group.

Sunday agenda-race!

Check out my selection for the first Sunday of the month:

1. palm beaches marathon
2. kid inlet challenge (cycling)
3. its a wonderful run 5k
4. double dash 5k

You can automatically rule out the second since its a non running event. I planned on the former but cost was major deterrence. I like #3 but chose the latter due to my teammate, Emily. I am glad she asked me as this inaugural race was also the first time you must have a team in order to compete. She came off a stellar performance at jingle bell jog the previous day and repeated this day. Although I broke 21 again (praise the Lord), I was much slower. Fortunately, our combined time was the fastest of all co-relays. Therefore, 'salt and pepper' is here as champs!

Post thanksgiving weekend

Post thanksgiving weekend is upon us!

Saturday agenda-race?

I only found 1, the bull run, held at 1 of my least favorite venues. Since I am doing long distance (both driving and running), I opted out and did an easy training run.

Sunday agenda-race?

This is marks the last day officially of the hurricane season. Here's what I found this day:

1. seattle marathon
2. space coast marathon
3. sal half and reindeer 4 miler
4. jcc 5k

You can automatically rule out the former (out of FL). The latter was closest in proximity and would be my normal selection but I pre registered for #2, so off I went.

Here's my glass synopsis:

Half full: beat last year's marathon by over 2 hours, finished without injury, ran till mile 21.
Half empty: worst non injury marathon in history, over 4  hours

Thanksgiving!

Happy Thanksgiving!

I had a bad day at the 'office' by running horribly and not making the podium but I have to dig deep to find something positive. I am thankful to be alive and able to complete the race plus received a medal along with all the other finishers. Just about every major town had at least 1 race, usually a turkey trot. Below are the ones I considered:

1. run for the pies 4 miler
2. JCC turkey trot
3. tamarac turkey trot
4. ft Lauderdale turkey trot
5. jungle island turkey trot
6. Baptist turkey trot 5k/10k

Clint Eastwood synopsis:

The good: finishers medal, cool
The bad: windy, zipper broke on tights
The ugly: didn't place, parking fee

Sunday, November 23, 2014

Pre thanksgiving weekend

Pre thanksgiving weekend is upon us!

Saturday agenda-race!

Here's what I found for the day of the full moon:

1. race for education 5k
2. race for recovery 5k
3. delray turkey trot
4. steps for healing 5k

Can you believe I couldn't find any notable races out of the local area? Well, I got lazy and did the latter because it was closest in proximity. I didn't care for the start time (8 am) but luckily, the cloud cover kept down some of the heat. However, not the humidity. I did what I could and when the dust cleared (especially the timing issues), I made the top ten and won my age group. Unfortunately, I got just a generic medal and sadly, didn't break 21. Happy to be on the podium.

Sunday agenda-race!

1. Philadelphia marathon
2. fall classic half/5k
3. inspiration 5k
4. girls on the run

You can automatically rule out the former (out of FL). I did the opposite today, and of the remaining, picked the furthest, eliminating the last 2. I did the 5k for speed work and the half course as training and for mileage. That tack on workout was a very long cool down at an easy pace. The task on hand was the 5k and here's my take, clint style:

The good: podium! mug award
The bad: course (2 loop)
The ugly: can't get 5k results yet (may have come & gone while I was training)

Saturday, November 15, 2014

Post veteran's day weekend

Post veteran's day weekend is upon us. I decided to pick events with new courses, rather than tried and true.

Saturday agenda-race!

Here's what I found for today:

1. Spartan race MA
2. swamp buggy
3. fantasy of lights
4. st Augustine 5k/10k
5. heroes for education 5k
6. light the night walk 5k
7. mariners hospital 5k

You can automatically rule out the former (out of FL). With enough local races, I didn't need #2 nor 4. I had the opportunity for a double header with either #3 or #6 but decided to pass on the that in lieu of rest. The latter was closest in proximity but been there, done that, leaving the remainder.

I am going to break this down clint eastwood style:

The good: podium, broke 21
The bad: 2 ag, medal, travel
The ugly: would've been 1 ag if top 3 given

Sunday agenda-race!

Here's what I found for this day:

1. big sur half marathon
2. rnr las vegas marathon
3. the biggest loser off road MA
4. st Augustine marathon
5. jolly be good 5k
6. 5 guys MDA 5k
7. coconut 5k
8. be a hero, run for a kid
9. iRun 5k/10k
10. zoorun5k

You can automatically rule out the first 3 (out of FL). With enough local races, I didn't need #4 nor 5. Amazingly, there were 2 in Miami, #9=sold out but the latter, I was just there last week; I passed on both. I never did #7 but did do #6 earlier this year with success, so I picked that one; bad move in hindsight. Although the number showed I had the best chance, the fact is I didn't, based on who showed up and with only 1 master slot.

I made my decision based on last year's stats and categories but to my dismay, I turned down a race I could've placed in for the one I picked. Check out the clint synopsis:

The good: broke 21 (2 in a row), trophies to those who placed
The bad: travel, more humid, the course
The ugly: didn't place (all under 20)

Veteran's day

Veteran's day is upon us! Allow me to thank all those who served honorably because as I always remind people, freedom is not free. Let me honor those also who paid the ultimate price so we can enjoy our freedoms.

I completed a rare weeknight race in honor of veteran's day. The course was challenging, with 2 bridges, twice. Luckily, weather was nice. It was a high quality, high quantity race. By the grace of God, I made the podium, taking the last age slot.

Pre veteran's day/full moon weekend

Pre veteran's day/full moon weekend is upon us!

Friday agenda-Waterford 5k

It is a rare weekday race but I had to pass on it due to the following:

1. bad history-got ripped off a position at time of awards ceremony (never posted as called)
2. bad categories-only top overall then fall to age
3. racewalk was eliminated
4. time of race- I cant get from near zoo to that location, couldn't take any time off work
5. external conditions-parking, usually hot weather

Saturday agenda-race!

I found a good number of events for today:

1. Spartan race MS
2. biggest loser off road
3. rnr savannah marathon and half
4. Disney wine and dine half
5. walk to cure arthritis
6. sallarulos race 4 champs
7. 5k walk/run for hunger
8. light the night walk
9. steps for sos 5k
10 key Biscayne lighthouse run 5/10
11. olde naples 5k
12. key largo bridge run 5/10/half
13. Miami wild 5k

You can automatically rule out the first 3 (out of FL). I pass on #5 and 8 (night event) since they are not really races (no awards). I actually had the chance to do a double header (and did so back in the day) since #4 is a night race but now I wont follow up another half with barely 6 hours between since I am no spring chicken. This time I went with closest in proximity and chose the latter.

I am going to jump right into the clint eastwood synopsis:

The good: top age (actually top master), top ten
The bad: start time, late, hot & humid, generic medal
The ugly: no overall, no master, strange age categories (worst being 51+)

Sunday agenda-race?

Not so many events this day:

1. 6 flags discovery 5k
2. 13.1 marathon/5k
3. zoe loren make a difference 5k
4. Miami man tri/du

You can automatically rule out the former (out of FL). Without a swimmer, I passed on the latter tri. Since I need to do more distance training, I chose #2. I accomplished my goal to break 2 hours despite the delay waiting for the train and weather.

I am going to use the clint eastwood synopsis:

The good: completed half within self imposed time limit. heavy finishers medal
The bad: course, generic medal
The ugly: weather (wet & humid), no award, train delay

Saturday, November 01, 2014

Daylight savings weekend

Daylight savings weekend is upon us! Luckily, we fall back, giving an extra hour of sleep!

Saturday agenda-race?

Not much for the first Saturday of the month:

1. Spartan race TX, WI
2. 5k race for awareness

You can automatically rule out the former (out of FL). Can you guess which one I did?

Nowadays, it is rare to get a race that offers awards for walking; that is a plus. The minus was that both the run & walk only offered awards to the top 3 overall. Now its time for the clint synopsis:

The good: overall racewalker, weather
The bad: start time, generic medals
The ugly: cross country course, only 3 overall

This was my first ever cross country racewalk.

Sunday agenda-race!

This was a great day for external conditions sans the wind; cool with no humidity nor rain.

Heres what I found for the first Sunday of the month:

1. Spartan race TX
2. NYC marathon
3. 6 flags great adventure
4. sun capital half/5k
5. purple stride 5k
6. 5k park fest
7. Miami shores 5k
8. miracle walk and 5k

You can automatically rule out the first 3 (out of FL). I like #4 but been there, done that, along with the latter. Between the 2 remaining races that I don't remember ever doing, I picked the closest in proximity (#7).

The good: cold, 1 ag, top ten
The bad: wind, time
The ugly: 2 loop course (not announced), beat by 2 women, needed 2 jump car after race.

Saturday, October 25, 2014

Pre Halloween (last in October) weekend

Pre Halloween (last in October) weekend is upon us! Most events seem to be themed toward that holiday.

Saturday agenda-race!

Here's what I have found for the last Saturday of the month:

1. Spartan race CA, SC
2. the biggest loser off road race CA, SC
3. right to fright costume 5k
4. every boob counts 5k
5. monster dash 5k
6. Halloween half & freaky 4 miler

You can automatically rule out the first 2 (out of FL). I passed on the latter, even though closest in proximity, due to the running distance. Although still far (near boca), #5 was the next closest in proximity. Except for the wind, external conditions were good (cool, not so humid). Despite that, somehow I struggled (tired prior and during). Im gonna sum it up, clint style:

The good: podium (1 ag), top ten, finisher medal
The bad: wind, ag medal
The ugly: missed the master title by 26 secs, beat by 2 women, still not under 21

Sunday agenda-race!

Here's what I have found for the last Sunday of the month:

1. Spartan race CA, SC
2. marine corps marathon
3. rnr LA half
4. ironman 70.3 Miami
5. run for life 5k
6. flanigans rockin' rib run 10k
7. fau homecoming 5k

You can automatically rule out the first 3 (out of FL). With no swimmer, strike out #5. By the grace of God, I was able to do the last 2, getting in my last double header of the month.

Morning agenda-flanigans rockin' rib run 10k

I remember the inaugural last year and that field was fast enough, so I knew I really didn't have a chance. What pissed me off is that I felt tightness and some injury prior to and during the race, forcing me to a marathon shuffle just to finish. Praise the Lord, I did finish, unlike an elite runner I saw coming back on the side. It was my worst 10k ever but I was more concerned with whether or not I could complete my double header mission, so I didn't worry too much about my pace. Sadly, I couldn't blame anything on the weather because it was nearly ideal.

Evening agenda-fau homecoming 5k

The good: podium, time better than first race
The bad: 2 ag, hot afternoon race, course, not top dozen
The ugly: beat by 2 women, still not under 21

The trick was internal condition that affected my time and placement. However, despite that, my treat from the heavenly father above was complete 3 races over this weekend and leave with some kind of hardware (includes finisher medals) in each event

Saturday, October 18, 2014

Ock 2 bray

Ock 2 bray. That's how October is pronounced in Spanish. This also mark just past the mid month crisis.

Saturday agenda-race!

This is what I found for this day:

1. Spartan race MS
2. Sanibel 10k
3.trick or trot trail 5k
4. zombie rush 5k
5. run for the money 5k
6. 5k ghost run
7. race for the cure 5k

You can automatically rule out the former (out of FL). I planned on a double header since #3 was a night race but it got cancelled. I passed on the furthest (2,3) and the closest (7), leaving the remaining in palm beach. I took the closest one of those (6).

The weather was nice for a change (upper 60s, no wind, low humidity). Despite good external conditions, my internal conditions (tired and tight, with some knee issues remaining) cost me the age group win. With a podium appearance, i will count my blessings.

The good: podium, plaque, weather
The bad: travel, 2nd ag
The ugly: time, injury, beat by 3 women

Sunday agenda-race!

Here's what on the docket this day (a plethora of events):

1. the biggest loser 5k/half WI
2. Toronto marathon
3. Detroit marathon
4. atlantic city marathon
5. rocktoberfest 10 miler
6. wellington 10 miler
7. long boat du/tri
8. freedom ride
9. sarcoma 5k
10. buddy walk and 5k run
11. spooktacular 5k

You can automatically rule out the first 4 (out of FL/US). With current internal condition, not ready for the next 2, so i'll stick 2 what i do best with the remaining; Still a lot to choose from. I didn't feel like the travel for #7. With enough running races, strike out the ride. I should've taken 10 since I don't remember doing it but I decided latter over the other, even though I like both.

The good: podium, cool weather, time better than yesterday
The bad: humidity, 2nd ag, the course
The ugly: burned out sooner, beat by 3 women

I enjoyed the number of choices, especially sunday. Unfortunately, it can cause regret when you see hind sight that you could've done better elsewhere, as I did.

Saturday, October 11, 2014

Columbus day weekend

Columbus day weekend is upon us! I discovered the hard way that I don't get that day off at my job.

Saturday agenda-race!

Most races were scheduled for today:

1. Spartan race UK
2. rnr Brooklyn 10k
3. adva race for hope 5k
4. schott 5k
5. pursuit of honor 5k
6. super hero 5k
7. hand in hand for Haiti 5k

You can automatically rule out the first 2 (out of FL/US). I have been to all but #6 but wasn't sure if that gave out normal awards, so I ruled it out. I decided on the furthest because it started the soonest (7:30 am). However, in hind sight, the latter not only was the closest in proximity but would've earned me the best position (top 3) and award (plaque). As history wrote, clint style:

The good: podium! both 5k & 10k available (I did the former)
The bad: far, hot & humid, generic medal
The ugly: only 1 overall & master, no t-shirt

Sunday agenda-race?

These are the events I considered for this day:

1. the biggest loser 5k/half
2. Chicago marathon
3. staten island half
4. ironman tri kona
5. rocketman FL tri
6. BK beach run 5k
7. Columbus day du/tri
8. shark shuffle 5k

You can automatically rule out the first 4 (out of FL/US). With no swimmer, knock out #5. The next started too late (8:30). I didn't prepare for a du so I chose the latter. Nothing to write home about:

The good: podium! improved both in time & position
The bad: windy & humid, generic medal
The ugly: I missed a master slot & plaque by 14 seconds, beat by 2 women in last mile.

I discovered I have a lot to do to get back to where I was. Wish me luck.

Saturday, October 04, 2014

Yom Kippur

Yom Kippur, the jewish day of atonement began before the first weekend of October.

Saturday agenda-race?

Here's what I found for the first Saturday of the month:

just one, run for the animals. I had to travel far for this one, but worth it considering:

The good: won age, made bakers dozen, plaque, finishers medal
The bad: the travel
The ugly: late start, hot and humid

Sunday agenda-race?

Here's what I found for the first Sunday of the month (much more):

1. six flags over texas 5k
2. rnr half marathon OH, CA
3. rnr Lisbon half and full marathon (Portugal)
4. dunns run
5. KB half marathon

You can automatically rule out the first 3 (out of FL/US). I need to do the latter but chose the remainder.

The good: external conditions (cool front came through)
The bad: some wind, the bridge (not too bad incline but the grating bad for my feet)
The ugly: didn't place, time, internal condition

Rare Monday agenda-Portland  half & full marathon

Sadly, I went from hero to zero over this weekend.

Saturday, September 27, 2014

Last weekend of September

Last weekend of September is upon us!

Saturday agenda-race?

Here's what I could find for the last Saturday of this month:

1. Spartan race IL, CD
2. the biggest loser off road IL
3. FD3 mr tri/du
4. run for the way 5k
5. courage challenge day
6. cara cara 5k
7. zero race to end prostate cancer 5k

You can automatically rule out the first 2 (out of FL/US). To make a long story short, I picked the latter (closest in proximity). I'll break it down clint style:

The good: top master & ten
The bad: hot & humid, some wind
The ugly: mysterious back injury occurred 2 days prior, affecting time

To get the good, I had to run strategically, and by the grace of God, I took out the 2 master runners in the last mile despite the injury.

Sunday agenda-race?

Here's what I could find for the last Sunday of this month:

1. Spartan race UK, CD
2. rnr providence half
3. escape to Miami tri

You can automatically rule out the first 2 (out of FL/US). Without a swimmer (my usual went solo), that means I didn't race. Besides, the back was still bothering me, so I did some cycling as training.

Saturday, September 20, 2014

Final weekend before fall begins!

Final weekend before fall begins! Autumn will be officially on Tuesday.

Saturday agenda-race!

Here's what's on my list for the last Saturday before autumn is official:

1. Spartan race VT, PA
2. the biggest loser off road VT, PA
3. US air force marathon
4. run against violence 5k
5. homestead foam 5k
6. Miami children's 5k
7. run for the poor 5k

You can automatically rule out the first 3 (out of FL). I planned on the next but it fell through. #5 was a fun run. However, by the grace of God, a double header was possible with the last 2, with the latter at night.

Morning agenda-Miami children's 5k

I unfortunately picked the wrong race and came up empty. Its clint time:

The good: close in proximity, finishers medal
The bad: hot & humid, high quantity & quality race, I struggled
The ugly: high entry fee, difficult to get results on site

Evening agenda-run for the poor 5k

I got a rare second chance to redeem myself; praise the Lord for the opportunity. It's eastwood time:

The good: close in proximity, podium as 1 ag (was 2nd oa)
The bad: humid, wet (rain), no finishers medal, catered only toward Hispanics (90% Spanish spoken)
The ugly: cross country, 2 lap course with multiple, sharp turnarounds, parking set up, only 1 oa, no master, generic medal.

Sunday agenda-race!

Here's what's on my list for the last Sunday before autumn is official:

1. Spartan race
2. the biggest loser off road VT
3. optime 5k

You can automatically rule out the first 2 (out of FL). That leaves only the latter. i  have a chance to close out on a high note. clint eastwood, take it away:

The good: podium, finishers medal
The bad: hot & humid, high quantity, 2nd and not in top ten, time
The ugly: started late (over 15 min), hilly course

Post 911 weekend

Post 911 weekend is upon us! More races dedicated to the plight were held.

Saturday agenda-race?

Here is what I could find on this day:

1. Spartan race CA
2. biggest loser offroad CA
3. jeff annas firefighter 5k
4. tunnels to towers 5k

You can automatically rule out the first 2 (out of FL). The latter was closest in proximity but im not to fond of the course. In hindsight, I heard it was raining bad. Once again, I didn't fair well here. Check it out clint eastwood style:

The good: finisher medal, dry, not as hot (cloudy)
The bad: the drive, humidity, not in top ten
The ugly: didn't place (4 ag), time

Sunday agenda-race?

Here is what I could find on this day:

1. rnr half PA
2. paradise coast int du/tri/10k
3. trilife half iron tri
4. lung cancer 5k
5. FD 5k
6. trilogy bonus du/tri

You can automatically rule out the former (out of FL). With 3 local events, scratch the next 2. The latter was closest in proximity, but I only felt like running. Both were inaugural races, so I chose the course I least get to run on, #5.

This was the race for redemption but only 1 problem- I woke up with an injury! By the grace of God, I was able to nearly match my time of yesterday in a minor league race. I began not even in the top ten, worked up to third overall by mile 1 and held for a mile before I was passed by some 'kid'. I hung on to the 4th slot in the final mile and blessed with the overall master victory. Runner's depot did well as both overall male (chris) and female (Emily) were taken and we all got plaques. The rest were medals (Louis took his age cat by storm) & co-owner chuck, 3rd.

Pre 911 weekend

Pre 911 weekend is upon us! Thursday will mark the actual anniversary. Race organizers want to beat that date to commemorate.

Saturday agenda-race?

Here's what I found for the first day of the first weekend in September:

1. Spartan race NJ, GA
2. the biggest loser off road NJ
3. Kelowna wine country half
4. 911 remembrance 5k
5. UPS 5k

You can automatically rule out the first 3 (out of FL). While the latter was closest in proximity, I been there done that. Therefore, I did the remaining that was near palm beach.

Let me sum it up clint eastwood style:

The good: podium, finisher medal
The bad: weather (rain, & humidity), not in top ten, 2 ag
The ugly: far, time, medal (not trophy)

Sunday agenda-race?

Here's what I found for the first sunday of the first weekend in September:

1. Spartan race NJ
2. the biggest loser off road NJ
3. Lehigh Valley Marathon
4. 911 freedom 5k

You can automatically rule out the first 3 (out of FL), leaving only the latter.

Let me sum this up clint eastwood style:

The good: time a bit better than yesterday, no rain
The bad: weather (heat & humidity), not in top ten
The ugly: didn't place (didn't get a trophy)

Labor day weekend

Labor day weekend is upon us! This is the last weekend to race this month.

Saturday agenda-race?

Believe it or not, I had to travel to make that a yes. Check it out:

1. Spartan race UK
2. pilot 5k
3. legacy 5k

You can automatically rule out the former (out of FL/USA). Today began cooler than usual (upper 70s) but was a bit windy and still humid. I went in as defending master champion. Now, check this out clint eastwood style:

The good: top ten and podium
The bad: generic medal, 1 tight turnaround
The ugly: no master title (if top 3, I would get master again, otherwise the 3 oa would)

Sunday agenda-race?

Here's what I found for this day:

1. Spartan race UK
2. rnr half marathon VA
3. wine country half OR
4. Disney land half
5. king of the hill
6. mr labor day du/tri

You can automatically rule out the first 4 (out of FL/USA).

Monday agenda-race?

Happy labor day! To labor (race) or not to labor (rest), that is the question. Fortunately, I got to race.

It was hot and humid, especially since it began 8'ish. It was a cross country race also, 2 vices against me. Let's sum it up clint style:

The good: podium
The bad: generic medal, weather, course (including many puddles), not in top ten, 3 ag
The ugly: bad sole affected my good soul

You got that right, the left shoe lost parts during race, slowing me down further.

Sunday, August 24, 2014

Andrew anniversary weekend

Andrew anniversary weekend, yes, the hurricane is here, officially on sunday.

Saturday agenda-race?

Here's what I could muster for this day:

1. Spartan race VA
2. biggest loser off road VA
3. seattle marathon
4. ft Desoto du/tri
5. rampage 5k
6. lions run 5k
7. down2earth 5/10/half
8. runway 5k

You can automatically rule out the first 3 (out of FL). I planned on a double header (the latter was a night race) but it got cancelled. I passed on all but #5 because it was the last of the elite series and where the series award would be given.

I am gonna sum this up clint eastwood style:

The good: made the podium
The bad: course was longer, affecting my time, travel to race
The ugly: was 2nd in age but given 3rd due to double dipping by master, course, humidity

Sunday agenda-race?

22 years ago, the hurricane that changed FL forever! The racing drought was so bad, I found 1 event:

1. down2earth 5/10 trail runs

That means only training and I didn't really do that. I decided to do something rare, rest.

Sunday, August 17, 2014

Last weekend before school starts!

Last weekend before school starts! Pre season football already started. Unfortunately, the racing drought is still on.

Saturday agenda-race?

Here's what I found for this day:

1. Spartan race CD
2. fast cat 5k
3. MCC champions club 5k
4. ING kick off 5k

You can automatically rule out the former (out of US). I originally planned on the latter but its only a fun run and I felt like competing, plus anyway, been there, done that. Of the remaining, #2 seemed closer, at least to a friend I know.

This was actually a cross country race that drew a lot on kids (teenagers). Let me sum it up clint style:

The good: placed in age group
The bad: hot, humid, wet field, travel to race
The ugly: didn't even make top 50, time (due to the bad), somebody beat me, medal

Sunday agenda-race?

Here's what I could muster for this day:

1. Spartan race CD
2. trilogy 3 du/tri

You can automatically rule out the former (out of US). Due to expenses, I passed on the latter, meaning I didn't race. I did an easy, short run to allow room for house work.

Sunday, August 10, 2014

Full moon weekend

Full moon weekend is upon us! However, what is good is the start of football! Albeit preseason, it kicks off my other favorite team sport. Unfortunately, still a racing drought with plenty of rain throughout the week.

Saturday agenda-race?

Check out what I found this day:

1. biggest loser off road MA
2. cape 5k
3. down to run full moon 10 miler

You can automatically rule out the former (out of FL).

Sunday agenda-race?

1. biggest loser off road MA
2. Spartan race MA

You can automatically rule out the first 2 (out of FL).

Saturday, August 02, 2014

First weekend of August

First weekend of August is upon us. And yes, the racing drought continues while the rain has not.

Saturday agenda-race?

Here's what I found for the first Saturday:

1. Spartan race WA
2. biggest loser off road WA
3. workman warriors 5k
4. la roootaaa regatta
5. kid heroes 5k

You can automatically rule out the first 2 (out of FL). I passed on #4 (cycling). The latter was closest in proximity, so it was chosen. Let me break it down clint eastwood style:

The good: top ten and age group
The bad: weather (humid and rain), time
The ugly: the entry fee, personally, I hate the location

I got caught in the rain before and during the run. The bridge was slippery along with painted parts of streets, affecting me time. What was good was pancake breakfast available.

Sunday agenda-race?

Here's what I found for the first Sunday:

1. rnr Dublin half
2. biggest loser 5k IL
3. boone gran fondo NC

You can automatically rule out the first 3 (out of FL/US). Uh oh! No races remaining, so I did a long overdue long training run.

Saturday, July 26, 2014

Final weekend of July

Final weekend of July is upon us. Can you believe it? While rain was bountiful, races are not.

Saturday agenda-race?

Here's what I found for the last Saturday:

1. Spartan race CD
2. biggest loser 5k trail DC
3. eagle lakes 5k
4. Hutchinson island tri

You can automatically rule out the first 2 (out of FL/US). Without a swimmer, the latter is eliminated.

I needed this race to rebound from the disastrous weekend last week. Its clint eastwood time:

The good: won age group
The bad: not even in top 20 overall, medal as award, time
The ugly: weather (almost cancel race due to lightning with rain, still humid), beat by 3 women

Sunday agenda-race?

Here's what I found for the last Sunday:

1. san Francisco marathon
2. biggest loser 5k VT
3. Huntington's disease tri

You can automatically rule out the first 2 (out of FL/US). Without a swimmer, the latter is eliminated. Uh oh, nothing left! I trained on my inlines this day.

Saturday, July 19, 2014

Who lee oh!

Who lee oh! That's how it sounds to say july in Spanish. And yes, the racing drought continues, just as the rain and/or heat with humidity.

Thursday agenda-run, sweat and beers

Yes, a rare weekday race and at night, basically. Both are disadvantages for me. Let me sum it up, clint eastwood style:

The good: got in a race and was 2nd in normal 5 yr age category
The bad: drive, weather (hot and humid), only 1 master, time
The ugly: didn't place due to 10 yr age group

After party was good for meat eaters (chicken); I dealt with the salad. I had to rush home to get ready for work.

Saturday agenda-race?

I found a couple, both at night:

1. hemingway 5k sunset run
2. dreher park dash

Although both are far, I chose the closest in proximity, the latter.

Last year, I suffered a heat related mishap and unfortunately, reminded of this. The worst insult was by an announcer, who embarrassed me in front of my brother (on rare visit) and friends, and to my dismay, I let that get the best of me, repeating the same misfortune. Sadly, it was worse since I not only didn't place but needed assistance to finish. Thankfully, I'm alive to talk about.

Sunday agenda-race?

I am aware of only 1-trilogy 2. After what just occurred, this was out anyway, therefore no racing and no hardware for this weekend.

Awards? Who me?, no!

Saturday, July 12, 2014

Near mid month, still crisis!

Near mid month, still crisis! This weekend is just 3 days shy of the middle of july and already, so much drama. A personal issue began the week. rainy weather all week. The host country brazil gets decimated by Germany, just in the first half alone! No more big 3 in Miami as king james defects back to Cleveland; aka LeGone! This is one of the worst racing drought weekends thus far.

Saturday agenda-race?

This is what I could dig up:

1. Spartan race PA, CD
2. mr ft Desoto series 1
3. strider track meet

You can automatically rule out the former (out of FL/USA). Rather than travel far, I picked the latter. This year, they removed 2 events (200 & 100) & added another (4x400 relay). This decision forced me to race less since there were not enough to form a 2nd team in time. Also, due to the race drought, more competitive people showed up, so this year, I didn't fair as well. 200 fun run was added at last minute. Glass time:

Half full: showed in 400, 800 & completed all events I entered, sub 6 in the mile.
Half empty: aforementioned deleted events, not on a relay, didn't place in mile & way off in keno prediction run.

Sunday agenda-race?

This is what I could muster:

1. Spartan race PA
2. military run 6k

You can automatically rule out the former (out of FL). Found out about the latter after the fact I did a long training run, so therefore, I didn't race.

Independence weekend

Independence weekend is upon us! USA! We broke away from England to create our own madness, uh, destiny.

Friday agenda-race!

Happy independence day! Lots of races today, a dream for me. Now the tough part is which one?

1. crime stoppers july 4 5k
2. freedom 5k (cape coral)
3. firecracker 5k (Melbourne)
4. moe's  firecracker 5k
5. mr independence day du/tri
6. Weston hometown 5k
7. star spangled 5k

I decided to go tried and true, eliminating the first 4. Now what to do? I picked the latter since I will race near there again this weekend.

This is one of the few times I was happy with my finish. The time was better than as of late (low 20) and I was 8 seconds short of claiming the master title. Praise the Lord because I needed a better time this year to win my age group as opposed to last year. I got a coffee mug as an award.

Saturday agenda-race?

Not! Believe it or not, I couldn't find anything within my range but I bet Jon did. I did light training. Happy birthday to my mom this day.

Sunday agenda-race?

Thankfully, I found something but of course, I had to travel. I did this one last year so it was a return visit. I had the misfortune to set up my bike next to the top asshole triathlete who accused me of moving his bike to set mine. That insult in itself was bad but it was the 5 minute expletive ridden tirant, like a bitchy wife, non stop with no chance to respond. Naturally, I remained silent, as he was looking for a fight. He did this prior to and after the race. Thanks to my belief in God, no physical harm occurred, only verbal. Other than that, business as usual. Check it out clint style:

The good: top ten and podium finish
The bad: struggle with bike, travel to event, technical bike course, 2 loop run
The ugly: the incident

Did you know that the youngest of the race organization contemplated disqualifying me based solely on hearsay from the irate, false accuser? What a travesty that would have been. Fortunately, better judgement was exercised. I got a drinking mug as an award. After both events, I have plenty of drinking vessels.

Last weekend of first half ('14)

Last weekend of first half ('14) is upon us!

Saturday agenda-race?

Not much to choose from:

1. Spartan race UT, CD
2. sugden stride 5k
3. freedom 5k
4. down2earth 5/10/half

You can automatically rule out the former (out of FL/US). I passed on the latter even though it was closest in proximity. I like both of the remaining races listed but could only pick one. I decided to return the one that began my 2 time overall champion reign in the elite series, much like the Miami heat's back to back accomplishment. Unfortunately for me, things have changed. I'm a bit slower, increase in faster runners and rule changes. Today, I won my age group  but was given second due to double dipping (master winner beat me). No more glass award, now traditional medal; it was big and nice. I just cleared the bakers dozen to close out the month.

Sunday agenda-race?

1. Spartan race CD
2. down2earth 5/10/half trail.

You can automatically rule out the former (out of FL/US). I passed on the latter even though it was closest in proximity. Carbon copy, right? Well, since that eliminates all, it means I didn't race this day and opted for light training instead.

Saturday, June 21, 2014

Summer is here!

Summer is here! Well, officially anyway; we felt it much sooner.

Saturday agenda-race?

Here's what I could find for the first day of summer:

1. Spartan race CD
2. rnr seattle marathon
3. summer sizzler 5k
4. race 4 the sea 4 miler
5. mr singer island du/tri
6. fight for air climb 5k
7. UNCF 5k

You can automatically rule out the first 2 (out of FL/USA). I have done all but #4 so I chose that using the been there, done that rule; big mistake! If I picked closest in proximity, I would've easily placed; you live and learn. Instead, I ran a 2 loop 4 miler, suffered in the heat, with the drive 2 the event and left without hardware. If I were lucky, I would have gotten a stone with some race data on it.

Sunday agenda-race?

1. Spartan race CD
2. rnr UK marathon

You can automatically rule out the first 2 (out of FL/USA). Well, with nothing left, off to training I go. I pulled out my inlines and skated 12 miles for crosstraining.

Saturday, June 14, 2014

Father's day weekend

Father's day weekend is upon us! Have a happy one, both potential (like me) or actual. Sadly, very few races; the drought continues.

Saturday agenda-race!

Check out what I considered on the eve:

1. Spartan race CD
2. rnr Oslo marathon
3. NW track and field (began last night, continues today)
4. triumph 5k

You can automatically rule out the first 2 (out of FL/USA). Since I don't feel like Bolt, guess which one I did?

Since this weekend is short in races, I'll do such in explanation, Clint Eastwood style:

The good: podium finish, early start, finishers medal
The bad: 3 ag & not top ten, hot and humid
The ugly: course was long making time even worse, only 1 oa and master titles

Sunday agenda-race!

Happy father's day! Due to racing drought, this was even worse:

1. fathers day 5k
2. NW track and field

Since I still don't feel like Bolt, guess which one I did? Finally, a race I never did, even though 2nd annual. The course was unfamiliar but not the weather; still hot & humid. Although I improved in all areas, I still was disappointed.

Since this weekend is short in races, I'll do such in explanation, Clint Eastwood style:

The good: top ten + top ag podium finish, early start, finishers medal
The bad: hot and humid, sharp turn around
The ugly: even worse, only 1 oa and no master title, award=finisher certificate

Saturday, June 07, 2014

Who knee, oh!

Who knee, oh! That's Spanish for June (junio).

Saturday agenda-race?

The drought begins! There were 2 races but one got cancelled, so my only choice was what I did. The muttsquerade 5k was an inaugural, although i have run the course in the past. The trip up was long to palm beach, so I was tired and legs a bit heavy. Even though the race began at 7:15, the sun was already out and it was hot and humid, so much so, that I forgot about whatever wind was blowing. When the dust cleared, I was in the dirty dozen and top ten male overall.

Sunday agenda-race?

The drought continues! This is all I could muster for today:

1. Spartan race NY, CA, CD
2. trilogy du/tri series 1

Due to finances, I didn't race. However, I did visit to say hello to many friends. While in the area, I did a long overdue long run.

Saturday, May 31, 2014

Transition weekend

Transition weekend is here once again!

Saturday agenda-race?

Although there has been a lot of rain since Thursday, it's a drought as far as racing:

1. Spartan race tri state NY
2. VA wine country half
3. pink heals 5k

You can automatically rule out the first 2 (out of FL). I was going to get over the weather and planned on the latter despite over a 2 1/2 hour commute but scrapped it because I was under the weather all of a sudden around midnight. I had to settle for training instead. What a disappointing way to close out the month.

Sunday agenda-race?

This is the first day of the month plus the hurricane season, and it too offers little in the area of racing:

1. Spartan race tri state NY
2. rnr San Diego marathon & half
3. run for the ribbons
4. twilight 5k

You can automatically rule out the first 2 (out of FL). I could have done a double header with the last 2 but got sick Friday and still feeling the effects. I did train racewalking the latter but focus whatever I had on the remaining event. By the grace of God, I got one of my better times this year despite both internal (sick) and external (heat, humidity) conditions. I began the month in a good position, making the podium (2 ag).

Conclusion: 3,2,1

3 events planned
2 events completed
1 event placed

Saturday, May 24, 2014

Memorial weekend

Memorial weekend is upon us! Let's give props to the soldiers who gave the ultimate price for our freedom.

Saturday agenda-race!

This is what I had planned on this day:

1. Spartan race CD
2. run like a bunny 5k
3. 5k zoo run

You can automatically rule out the former (out of USA). I planned on #2 when it was prior to Easter but it was cancelled due to the weather. I decided on the latter since its closest in proximity.

It was interesting as the race began at the west end parking lot (first time ever) and eventually ran through the zoo in reverse of previous events, but ending within as all. Sadly, it was a late start (8). I probably started too fast as I clocked in with a low 6 minutes. That quickly fell off as the temperature rose and my energy declined. Although I made the top ten and was the fastest master (not in top 3), I got by with top in age. To my dismay, someone I usually beat, got me good and was second only to Jon. No matter what, all who placed got generic medals.

Sunday agenda-race?

This is what I had planned on the final Sunday of the month:

1. Spartan race CD
2. oleta trail runs 5/10/half
3. Miami man speedway edition

You can automatically rule out the former (out of USA). The latter was an inaugural so I wanted so bad to do it but was just too expensive. The remaining is an off road event so I passed on that for training with my inlines; no race!

Monday agenda-race!

Tons of races were put on this day. This is what I boiled it down to:

1. veterans 10k/5k
2. Sandoval goodwill 5k
3. run on the green 5k
4. run for the pineapple 5k
5. memorial family 5k
6. Weston memorial 5k

I passed on the first 3 (west side of FL). I normally do the latter but opted to do something different (this is the year for that). Unfortunately, it was quite far even though not the furthest (#4) on the east side. Now for the Clint Eastwood synopsis:

The good: on the podium (2 ag)
The bad: hot, humid
The ugly: time, got beat by 6 women

I dared the added event, a fitness challenge. It features the 5k followed by the obstacle section.Glass time:

Half full: completed event, had 3rd fastest run time
Half empty: dead last in fitness section (admittedly, I just did enough to get through it (tough for me)

I not only didn't prepare nor train for such a challenge, it proved a lot more difficult than I imagined. I had to settle for lighter weights and still struggled. When I did know is that I refuse to give up; I ended up 2nd in 0-99.

Saturday, May 17, 2014

May flowers

May flowers were to follow April showers but it seemed to rain more this month thus far than all of last month!

Saturday agenda-race!

This is what I considered for today:

1. Spartan race TX
2. FAU card 5k
3. save the tiger 5k
4. Eric patrie memorial 5k
5. covenant house 5k
6. hugs for hope (fisp) 5k
7. golden panther chase
8. tour of the gables 5k
9. heal the stride 5k

This was an athletes dream as far as choices. You can automatically rule out the former (out of FL). The last 2 would make the most sense (closest in proximity) but also had the worst categories. I chose the furthest race on the FL east coast. It also seemed to be the largest. By the grace of God, I escaped with a podium appearance (2 ag) despite the ten year grouping. Another blessing was squeezing in an afternoon event and picking up a win, first in 2-3 years; praise the Lord!

Sunday agenda-race!

This is what I considered for this day:

1. Spartan race TX
2. rnr marathon Portland
3. Naples reverse tri
4.double road race
5. down and dirty race
6. FIU triathlon
7. run for relief 5k

You can automatically rule out the former (out of FL). I considered the next event, especially since I could do a double header at the same race but I already committed to the tri. I normally have Inga do the swim, while I get someone else to run (or bike) but didn't this time to satisfy my favorite athlete. She always wanted to run on a relay so she began and anchored on the team. It was windy & humid, bad for me on the bike. The course had a section full of speed bumps and rumble strips. One of them knocked an item loose, hitting the wheel on my bike, forcing me to stop to adjust. Despite that and 4th place on exchange, I was the fastest relay cyclist and her as a runner. We took the title, like the Miami heat (outfit I was wearing).

Saturday, May 10, 2014

Mother's day weekend

Mother's day weekend is upon us! For all actual, expecting or potential moms, have a good one.

Saturday agenda-race!

Not much today but here's what's on the docket:

1. Spartan race MT
2. wine country half marathon
3. 5k turtle trot
4. women for women 5k/10k
5. ALS 5k/10k

You can automatically rule out the first 2 (out of FL). Since the next was on the other side, I passed on that. I was not allowed to do #4 (no man for that matter), therefore, guess what? Either don't race or the latter; you what I chose.

First, I had to get over a mental block since this is the same venue as the tax event I couldn't race due to injury. Next, the weather; it was humid and windy. Luckily, the clouds kept down some of the heat. Also, the course itself has rolling bumps and twist and turns in the 2nd mile. By the grace of God, I closed out the top ten and wound up 2nd (somebody slipped by me). Blessed to make the podium.

Sunday agenda-race?

Let's see whats happening on mom's day:

Saturday, May 03, 2014

Cinco de Mayo prelude

Cinco de Mayo prelude weekend.

Friday agenda-race!

I got in rare TGIF race that was aptly named TGi5k. Glass time:

Half full: got in a weekday race, hardware-finishers medal, finish into sunfest
Half empty: hot, humid, windy, bad cat (40-99), didn't place

Saturday agenda-race!

Back to normal. These are my choices for the first Saturday of May:

1. Spartan race CO
2. turtle trot 5k
3. heroes in recovery 6k
4. big cardio 5k
5. Nat Moore scholarship run
6. the glory run

You can automatically rule out the first (out of FL). The rest were all good races but I decided to return to a tried and true event and the only 1 with an unusual distance. This was my redemption race. By the grace of God, I returned to a more normal position, top ten and a podium finish; that's the glass half full. Glass half empty- 2 ag and award was a towel (no trophy nor medal (except finisher).

Sunday agenda-race!

These are my choices for the first Sunday of May:

1. Spartan race CO
2. flying pig marathon
3. tropicool 5k
4. red bull wings for life 60 miler
5. madd dash 5k
6. westglades 5k
7. walk for wishes 5k
8. tri Miami

You can automatically rule out the first 2 (out of FL). Take out the next since the rest are on the east side of FL. Definitely not ready for #4. I passed on the latter without a swimmer, unless I want to do the du; I didn't. If I followed Jon's path, I could've done a double header with #6 but I slipped on my research and just did his second #7.

Ironically, I was at this location (parrot jungle) last week for an organ donor event. I represented my office as a champion for the cause and met many other co-workers I knew. This time, I came to race. I almost missed the start but the Lord above got me to the line just in time. The final mile was technical but scenic once inside the park and finished within. Let me close out Clint Eastwood style:

The good: top ten and master, clouds kept down the heat
The bad: humid and windy, no finisher medal as priors
The ugly: late start, missed double header that Jon did, medal

In closing: I am pleased to move from zero to hero with steady improvement throughout. Observe:

Race 1: 24 oa, 7 ag, 6:48 no award
Race 2: 7 oa, 2 ag 6:49 (pace slightly worse but longer distance)
Race 3: 4 oa, top master, 6:38

Pop's weekend!

Pop's weekend! Why? Well, today is his birthday for starters. Also, beautiful Florida weather (hot, sunny and no rain). All things must come to an end; this statement refers to the fact this is the last weekend of April this year. Prior to today, the corporate run occurred on Thursday; I had to miss due to time and distance from event.

Saturday agenda-race?

Here's what I have on my plate for the last Saturday of April:

1. rnr Nashville marathon
2. Spartan race IN
3. stomp out child abuse 5k
4. meek and mighty tri
5. the courage challenge
6. 5k ruck run
7. peak 5k
8. chase dream 5k
9. human race

You can automatically rule out the first 2 (out of FL/USA). If I included an obstacle type event #6, a double header was possible, but not! The next 2 were on the west coast; I didn't feel like that much of a drive. Instead, I did something different. I chose a 'fun' run that gave out medals to the first 50 finishers. I wanted to test out my feet after injury without having to push. However, this plan kind of fell by the wayside when Luis showed up and decided to jog with me. That jog was near race pace for me at 7. Believe it or not, I was 4th overall without major effort but finished feeling more confident.

Sunday agenda-race!

Here's what I have on my plate for the last Sunday of April:

1. the big sur marathon
2. rnr Madrid marathon
3. st Anthony's triathlon
4. the courage challenge
5. run from the rays 5k
6. pill box 5k

You can automatically rule out the first 2 (out of FL/USA). Without a swimmer, strike #3. I wound up picking the latter (proximity). Almost a disaster for me, because #1-no master titles and #2 high quality field. It began and finished on a concrete track. By the grace of God, I got the last ag spot & last time on podium this month. Let's do the glass synopsis:

Half full: podium (3 ag), 5 star post race (waffles, eggs, etc)
Half empty: no master titles, near generic medal

Easter weekend !

Easter weekend is upon us! In terms of racing, it began Thursday with the cpa 1040k. They offered both a 5k and 10k, but due to injury, I couldn't race either. I did complete a 5k distance as training/recovery.

Yesterday (good Friday), I found a night race far on the west coast of FL but due to the aforementioned, weather, and car problems (old), I had to pass.

Saturday agenda-race?

Due to Easter, all organizers who put on a race this weekend picked today to do it. Here is what was under consideration:

1. do the right thing 5k
2. awareness 5k
3. Rooney's 5k
4. run for the bunny 5k
5. mr egg hunt tri/du

The weather report affected my decisions, then finances. I wanted to do the first 2 for a double header, despite the financial strain but rain was coming from that direction plus old car problem changed that. I passed on the latter due to finances but ultimately would have been the most feasible and closest in proximity. I originally planned on #4 and made, only to find out it was cancelled. Unfortunately, I didn't have enough time to get to #3 due to the distance (furthest on my list for races on my coast). Therefore, I made it to 2 race sites but unable to race either of them.

Sunday agenda-race?

Not! This day is avoided due to Easter; have a happy one! Guess what? Clint Eastwood time:
The good: I am grateful for god's greatest gift-Jesus Christ!
The bad: no races for this day
The ugly:  no races for me at all for the entire Easter weekend; car problems still.

Monday agenda-race?

Yes and no. In the colonial states, it's a holiday-patriot's day. In bean town, it's race day; the legendary boston marathon (118th). Unfortunately, I was working, not racing.

Birthday weekend!

Birthday weekend! Even though I advance to junior in my normal age group (45-49) within 48 hours, I am still in that group. This is my last weekend before the change.

Saturday agenda-race!

Here's what I have on my docket for the last Saturday before I age up:

1. singer island 5/10/half
2. support our troops 5k
3. Spartan race/biggest loser FL,NY

Not much to do so selection is easier. Rule out the latter since its off road, obstacle style event, even though closest in proximity. I passed on the former because I don't want to do a half then follow up next day with a 5k. They offered a 5k but that race is also the furthest in FL, so #2 wins.

I been there, done that but forgot the categories. Even though also in palm beach, it was the closest normal 5k. Although external conditions were acceptable, my internal conditions were not. Let's sum this up Clint Eastwood style:

The good: podium (3 oa)
The bad: distance to race, medals to winners
The ugly: categories-only 1 oa, no master, ten yr ag (stripped me of 3 oa in lieu of 2 ag)

Sunday agenda-race!

Here's what I have on my docket for the last Sunday before I age up:

1. divas half TX
2. rnr Raleigh marathon/half
3. tour de Georgia gran fondo
4. run wild in the park
5. thin mint sprint
6. gumbo limbo green turtle gallop 10k
7. ives 5

You can automatically rule out the first 3 (out of FL). I chose the latter because #1- closest in proximity and #2-the remaining are all in the county I just raced in yesterday or worse! Let me add some additional reasons: #3 put on by runners depot and #4 an inaugural.

I am not keen on cross country races so I didn't know how I would fair, since this is one of those. Worse, I had to do loops, including a steep climb. By the grace of God, I finished in the top ten and won my age group. To my surprise, the time was faster than yesterday despite the external conditions. However, my internal conditions were much better. Best of all, I got a nice trophy!

Monday agenda-race?

Not! It's my birthday! Plus, its a weekday, not a nationally observed holiday. Of course, you know I will still train.

Genesis of April

Genesis of April is upon us, the first weekend. The first event was on Thursday up in ft Lauderdale-corporate run.

Saturday agenda-race!

Here is what I considered for the first Saturday of April:

1. ragnar relay so cal
2. Hollywood half (CA)
3. rayz awareness 5k
4. roar thru ybor
5. run for the turtles 5k
6. great American bacon race
7. caba 5k
8. run to stop MS 5k
9. 7 mile bridge run

You can automatically rule out the first 2 (out of FL). Strike #3 (furthest in my FL selection). It only took 1 rejection for me to lose desire to be in the latter, so that's out. There was actually a chance for a double header but after my struggles last week, I just focused on one. I picked the closest in proximity.

In a horrible twist of fate, I began the month with a loss that should have been a podium finish. Check it out Clint Eastwood style:

The good: top ten (6 moa), finishers medal, weather
The bad: late start (was to be a great 7 am start), no split clocks, can't see finish clock till after cross
The ugly: categories (only 1 oa, no master, ten yr ag) cost me a podium slot, say lost by 1 second

The course was interesting. It began and ended on the track and used a lot of narrow trails.

Glass half full: new course was interesting
Glass half empty: narrow, curvy paths, start at finish was bad

Sunday agenda-race!

Here is what I considered for the first Sunday of April:

1. April fools half
2. south beach triathlon
3. trisickle 5k
4. pilates 5k
5. rugged runner challenge
6. wellington kids tri

You can automatically rule out the former (out of FL). I cant do the next without a swimmer. I'm not allowed to the latter, even if I had a swimmer. Since the remaining were events I have never done, I picked closest in proximity.

The course was also interesting. It began and ended near the finish and after mile 1, for 1 mile, used a lot of narrow trails.

Let me break it down Clint Eastwood style:

The good: top 3, weather,  7 am start
The bad: no split clocks, double loop mid race and not on asphalt
The ugly: I couldn't get 2nd overall, award, PR didn't count (short)

I have to put something but the race was well done and worth a revisit. At least I closed out the weekend on top.

Saturday, March 29, 2014

March madness!

March madness! It is upon us! However, I'm not just talking about NCAA basketball. This is the last weekend in march. I have experienced many ups and downs.

Saturday agenda-race?

Here is what was on the schedule for the last Saturday of the month:

1. coral springs half/5k
2. south motors 8k at the zoo

I planned on the former but it fell through so I showed up at the latter. It also was closest in proximity. This decision was wise since the week long illness affected my performance. After 2 miles, in order to finish what I started, I began power walking, struggling with that as well. At mile 4, I jogged the rest and completed the event. It was an inaugural but seem as such. 5 star post race, finishers medals and trophies to overall, and top 2 ag; unfortunately, I couldn't partake in that as I needed to recover. This is a must do, and hopefully, I will plan on this one next time and be well enough to compete!

Sunday agenda-race?

Here is what was on the schedule for the last Sunday of the month:

1. divas half & 5k
2. run 4 the angels 4 mile relay
3. Florida brain cancer
4. march for hunger
5. Kendra's kisses 5k

You can automatically rule out the former (woman's event). Scratch #2, as I need 3 other partners. Of the remaining, #3 is the furthest, so I passed on that. I like the rest so with a flip of a coin, the latter won!

While the external condition were ok (cool with cloud cover but some wind & humidity), I was not (internal condition from illness). Since I'm disappointed forfeiting a trophy for a medal due to this, lets get this report over with Clint Eastwood style:

The good: podium (2 ag)
The bad: course,  wind & humidity
The ugly: loss a master position & to 2 runners I usually beat due to illness

I close out the month bitter sweet.

First spring weekend of the year

First spring weekend of the year is upon us!

Saturday agenda-race!

Not so many races sprung up for the first Saturday of spring:

1. 13.1 marathon NY
2. Spartan race NC
3. riverwalk 5 mile or k
4. homeless voice 5k
5. dash from the past 5k

You can automatically rule out the first 2 (out of FL). I actually had a chance at a double header (Bryan won them both, starting with #3) but I opted against it (still recovering from last weekend).

First, the Clint Eastwood synopsis:

The good: won ag, top ten
The bad: late start, medal
The ugly: weather, no master titles

To expound on the negatives, the late 8 start was delayed due to rain nearly 15 minutes. On top of that, it was very windy. Medals to all, even overall, although the top overall got gift baskets/gift cards.

Sunday agenda-race!

1. rnr half TX
2. Spartan race NC, HI
3. publix GA marathon
4. motion for the ocean 5k

You can automatically rule out the first 3 (out of FL). Guess what Im doing? Duh! The latter is a return visit.

First, the Clint Eastwood synopsis:

The good: won ag, top ten
The bad: late start, no standard award (goodie bag instead), 10 yr cat
The ugly: weather, no master titles, park entry, course

To expound on the negatives, the late 9 start was delayed nearly 15 minutes. On top of that, there was virtually no cloud cover to block the strong, hot sun. The course began and finished on concrete but was only about 5% of the surface; the rest was sand and of that, more than 70 % unpacked! Also, no mile markers nor clocks. Long line to enter because the park officials denied access until 8 then had the nerve to charge to get in.

Despite all that, I wouldn't rule out a return to those events.

Mid month/holiday weekend

Mid month/holiday weekend is upon us. It is the last weekend of winter. Sunday is a holy day even more as it is Purim plus on top of that, a full moon night. Monday is st. Patrick's day; look out for drunks.

Saturday agenda-race!

Check out my selection for today:

1. rnr marathon DC
2. gate river 15k
3. shamrock run (10 miler/5k)
4. march for cancer
5. st Patrick 10k
6. gospel color run
7. doral 5k

You can automatically rule out the former (out of FL). #2 was nearly out of FL (jax). The latter was closest in proximity but would have ruined my double header opportunity. #6 was the second, so which do I select to precede? I planned on #3 as a 5k but it fell through and forgot about #4. The closest to that event and earliest start was the 10k, so I took a chance on that.

Event 1: st Patrick 10k

I am not known for speed in the 10k and naturally, was reluctant to run it but logistically speaking, to pull off the double header, I had to take the challenge. My original plan was merely finish & get a medal for that achievement but the weather was great for a good run (cool, little or no wind). My goal was to average a 7 minute pace. By the grace of God, this was attained and was sufficient for an age group win! Unfortunately, I wasn't able to stay to know this nor collect my award.

Event 2: gospel color run

This was an interesting one. It was not only a trail run (cross country terrain with some on the street) but the fun run color concept. Naturally, I did my best to dodge getting hit with color since I am trying to race. Not only did I not like the course but it had 5 loops! Once again, the good Lord stepped in and allowed me to win my age group and somehow advance to 5th overall.

Sunday agenda-race!

Happy Purim! These are my choices for this day:

1. Sarasota half
2. 25.75 tri
3. shamrock run
4. run with the rabbi 5k
5. tribute to the military 5k

With enough local races, I passed on the former. The latter was closest in proximity but may have interfered with my double header opportunity; I lied, plenty of time between. Without a swimmer, eliminate the second. Anyway, my dad selected the race he wanted to do on his return to the racing world, so we ran with the rabbi. Afterward, I trained at the shamrock 4 miler, especially since I was very tight from the previous races.

I had a rocky start, dodging kids and experiencing after effects from yesterdays double. However, blessed by the Lord, when the dust cleared, dejavu; same position and similar time of yesterday. Also, I won my age cat as well. Despite lack of training, my dad took 2nd in his group, resurrecting the B.E.S.T. from days of old.

Spring forward!

Spring forward! Day light savings time is upon us!

Saturday agenda-race!

This is what I had on my schedule on the last day prior to the time change:

1. Spartan race GA
2. spring sprint 5k
3. Daniel's dash 5k
4. run to remember 5k
5. wild stampede 5k

You can automatically rule out the former (out of FL). #2 was the furthest local race; strike 2. The latter would make the most sense (closest in proximity) but I decided to race in broward. East side or west side; I picked the former and ran along the beach (mostly broadwalk).

This turned out to be an interesting race. At the start, some bozo cut me off, basically running into me sprinting (died before half mile), meanwhile I was barely in the dirty dozen, including Emily. When the dust cleared, the overall race winner was a female and the only one to break 19. Second overall runner was the male overall winner and the only man to break 20. In the last mile, I finally overtook a master runner, bumping him to that title overall but I failed to take out the runner up by seconds, so therefore I was declared third overall male. All title winners got trophies, the rest medals (unique, not generic). Nice cool start with low wind, plus finally, an early start (7 am).

Sunday agenda-race!

This is what I have on my schedule on the first day of the time change:

1. Spartan race GA
2. Kingston city run (half and 5k)
3. LA marathon
4. San Diego marathon
5. cooper city Richardson 5k
6. down2earth divas half/10/5k
7. sponsor an athlete 5k
8. bayfront challenge tri

You can automatically rule out the first 4 (out of FL/USA). Without a swimmer, I had to pass on the latter. Last year, I drove to broward to get ripped off an award by having grandmasters 6 deep, wiping out the master category effectively; eliminate #5. For that, I might as well stay close to home.

Dejavu! Well, sort of. Same results as the previous day but in a different way. Sharkey blew away the field and took the overall title. Since no other titles were offered, I fell to age group despite being third overall male. Yes, I was actually fourth since I failed to beat a girl who was a cross country champ for Gulliver, the school where this race was held. In the early stages of race, I did overtake her but she reclaimed her position for good halfway through race. She was in sight however. I bested my time from the previous day so I hold my generic medal with pride.

While I lost an hour of sleep, I did make the podium twice this weekend by the grace of God.

First weekend (of March)

First weekend (of March) is upon us! I slept right through February 30 and 31!

Saturday agenda-race!

Here's what I had on my plate for the first Saturday of the month:

1. bike MS (start)
2. palm 100 ultra
3. spring fest 5k/12k
4. race for the arts 5k
5. run for compassion 5k
6. fragile X circus run
7. romp through pinecrest

I passed on the former (2 day cycling event). #3 was the furthest event; its a no for that one. #2, been there, done that on a team; no interest solo.  #2 was the furthest event on the east side; no need with enough within 2 counties. Anyhow, the last 2 were in my county!

Since I travel so much, I was pleased with the latter (less than 20 minutes from home). Despite the late start (8), the weather was nice (cool with no wind). I finished by the time the heat was intensifying. The course was out and back but with many turns. When the dust cleared, I made the top ten and was 2nd in my age cat (somebody beat me with sub 20) since no master title was offered. Also, to my dismay, 2 women beat me, one of them beat everybody but the race winner. Can you say fast?

Sunday agenda-race?

Here's what I had on my plate for the first Sunday of the month:

1. army marathon
2. bike MS (return)
3. Excalibur 10 miler
4. hooters half
5. 13.1 Miami beach

Not many. You can automatically rule out the former (out of FL). Once again, I passed on the cycling event. No brainer; I chose the latter (closest in proximity).

Race? Yes and no. I have decided not to run established distance races but so fast to avoid injury, as in the past. However, I did set a goal (sub 1:50) and paced to achieve it. Good news: I did it! Bad news is that that time is my best in years. Sad, because I used to run low 1:30s with ease in the past. With this event, I completed 3 from the company, earning me the category 3 medal!

A rare weekend in that, not including picking up my packet, I remained in my county!

Saturday, February 22, 2014

Final weekend (of February)

Final weekend (of February) is upon us!

Saturday agenda-race!

Here's what is on my slate for the final Saturday of the month:

1. Gasparilla weekend, day 1.
2. everglades ultra 25/50k, 50 miles
3. 5k run at riverbend
4. 5k for a better day
5. heart health walk
6. sunsmart 5k

Since I travel a lot, I picked the latter (closest in proximity). Afterwards, I visited the tail end of #5 (not a race).

Unfortunately, it felt more like late spring than winter; it was hot & somewhat humid. There's virtually no shade at Crandon park or at least on this course. On top of that, the race start is 8 am! By the grace of God, when the dust cleared, I made the top ten and won 2nd master. Sadly, this year, all those who made the podium got medals (no plaques for overall and top masters as in the past). However, the title winners did get a gift certificate.

Sunday agenda-race!

Here's what is on my slate for the final Sunday of the month:

1. Disney princess half
2. Gasparilla weekend, day 2
3. MS walk (palm beach and ft. Lauderdale)
4. emb(race) 5k/10k
5. tour de broward 5k & 50k/100k rides
6. carnival Miami run
7. Miami skate social
8. beach 5k run

Guess what?  I picked the latter (closest in proximity). Dejavu but worse! Unfortunately, it felt more like summer than winter; it was even hotter & more humid, especially since it too was an 8 am start. There was no shade as we ran on the beach. Luckily, it was mostly hard packed sand. On top of that, it was a 2 loop course, which makes for more traffic. At first, I wasn't even in the top ten but by the grace of God, I finished third overall! This one did as the other race used to, and gave out plaques to the top 3 overall and masters.

In closing, this was an incredibly hot and humid winter weekend with me doing races that began at 8, seemingly geared for colder weather. However, a very successful end to black history month with back to back top ten finishes and most of all, podium!

Winter holiday weekend

Winter holiday weekend is upon us. Yesterday was valentines day and Monday is presidents day, whereas the weekend fall in between.

Saturday agenda-race!

Here's what I decided on:

1. Spartan FL
2. love the lake 5/10/half
3. 5 guys 5k/10k
4. fort Lauderdale 5k
5. run in the  meadow 5k

With enough local events, I passed on the first 2. The latter makes the most sense (closest in proximity) but I exercised the been there, done that rule. I haven't done the remainder so I selected based on venue and mid event won!

Both a 5k & 10k were offered. Let's sum this up Clint Eastwood style:

The good: won age group and top ten
The bad: furthest local race
The ugly: very cold, time.

Sunday agenda-race?

Yes and no. I only found 2, paradise coast half and a1a half/full marathon; I chose the latter. Yes, it is a race but I didn't race it. Instead, I agreed to anchor the 4 hour 2 person marathon pace team. We finished on point (only +5 seconds). It began cold, warmed up after 3 hours but remained windy. I left without major injury but did suffer blisters. Pleased to get in my long run and help others at the same time.

Olympic weekend

Olympic weekend is upon us, the winter one that is. Its being held in Sochi, Russia; never heard of that place. Of course, I'm looking for the podium just like those athletes.

Saturday agenda-race!

These are the events on my radar:

1. battle for ft Desoto half
2. barrier free 5k
3. love for children 5k
4. cobra country 5k
5. walk for wishes 5k
6. beach side 5k
7. fiu color run
8. runwild 5k

With so many races in the tri county area, rule out the former, and even the next 3 (palm beach). The latter was closest in proximity but since I discovered a double header opportunity, that one was also eliminated. Both races venues were familiar territory. Note: a triple event day was possible but the last event (#7) was not a race, therefore I passed on it.

Race 1-beach side 5k

I like this one because #1 early start & #2 out and back course, #3 decent weather. Make my day, Clint:

The good: won age group, top ten, best time of the year & in months, (these results by hind sight)
The bad: no tshirt at beginning, entry fee
The ugly: I had to leave without knowledge of results (finish clock was off) nor placement (got to get to next race), no award even if I placed because I have to get to next race

Race 2-walk for wishes 5k

It was strange how different the weather was from east to west. I drove into heavy fog on the way to this event. This could have been a disaster considering the already late start was delayed, but by the grace of God, the clouds kept down the heat but not the humidity. Let's recap Eastwood style:

The good: 2nd overall (best running position of the year), top ten
The bad: weather (much more humid, but thankfully, cloudy), late start (although good today)
The ugly: I got smoked by 5 minutes!

I earned 2 medals but left with only 1 when the dust cleared.

Sunday agenda-race!

Only about half the events:

1. Spartan race AZ (actually began previous day & includes this one)
2. I care, I cure, I run 5k
3. run through central park 5k
4. madd dash 5k

No double or triple available. You can automatically rule out the former (out of FL). Using the been there, done that rule, the latter wins!

Even though I haven't done this event, the course was familiar (tropical park). This race actually sold out as it grew beyond expectations. Much like race 2 of the previous day, this could have been a disaster considering the start was delayed a half hour, but by the grace of God, the clouds kept down the heat. Fortunately, the humidity was not as bad as yesterday.

Clint Eastwood in closing:

The good: won age group, top ten, best time of the year (yes, I beat yesterday)
The bad: generic medal to all podium finishers
The ugly: was top master but no such title given

Saturday, February 01, 2014

First weekend in February!

First weekend in February! This begins black history month. Being this is the shortest month, we get shafted again.

Saturday agenda-race!

Not many events but nevertheless:

1. sari center 5k
2. tropical 5k
3. st Thomas alumni 5k

So far, this is the year to do things differently. This rules out #2. Therefore, my choice would be either the former or the latter. Using the proximity rule, the latter won.

Although I have never done this one prior to ING, upon arrival to the event, I remember doing it before. What I didn't remember was the outrageous categories. My first Clint Eastwood synopsis of the month:

The good: top master (listed as 40+), top ten, finisher medal, division trophy
The bad: time, late start, weather (hot & humid for season)
The ugly: categories, cross country course

Sunday agenda-race!

Only found the (ING) Miami marathon and half, hence why I paid dearly to be in the event.

The good: finished under 2 hours, nice medal
The bad: weather ( windy, hot and humid), lack of water till near 3rd mile
The ugly: 1st time in history stopping to use bathroom, worse prior to 5k mark.

Saturday, January 25, 2014

E nair O!

E nair O! That's how you pronounce the Spanish word for January. This is a pitiful weekend because there are so few events.

Saturday agenda-race!

I only found a few:

1. run for kids 5k
2. Dan marino autism walk
3. fight for air climb

I passed on the latter (stair climb) and stuck to tried and true-running; that means not the walk either.

Back to my favorite Clint style synopsis:

The good: won my first master title of the year plus top ten
The bad: cold but luckily no wind, generic medal, long walk to start, double loop course
The ugly: worst time of the year

Saturday agenda-race?

I only found a few:

1. 25.75 tri
2. suncoast half
3. butterfly 5k

Rule out the former since I have no swimmer. Due to circumstances, mainly finances, I also passed on the others, meaning no racing; a rarity! Although I need to recover, I  did pull out my inlines and rolled a dozen miles.

Saturday, January 18, 2014

MLK jr weekend

MLK jr weekend is upon us. Other than Jesus Christ, he is a true hero. With the blessing of God, he spawned radical, positive change to a racist society, who chose to ignore the what was in the constitution and the bible, as far as I am concerned, in regards to equal rights and fair treatment to all humans, just based on skin color.

Saturday agenda-race!

These are the events I on my radar today:

1. st Pete beach classic 5k/10k
2. Bahamas marathon (and 4p relay/half/5k) weekend
3. the Honda classic 5k
4. race for faith 10k/5k
5. run for education 5k
6. Brandon's run

You can automatically rule out the second (out of US). After that, it was a toss up since I don't remember doing any of those races. Being a God fearing and praising man, race for faith got my attention.

Time for the Clint Eastwood synopsis:

The good: top age and ten
The bad: cold (I like cool), long drive
The ugly: 2nd worst time of the year

Sunday agenda-race!

These are the events I selected for this day:

a. Bahamas marathon (and 4p relay/half/5k) weekend
b. hearts at work 5k
c. together we see eye run
d.Miramar pines rotary 10k/5k
e. bay harbour islands 10k/5k
f. Naples half
g. key west half and 5k

You can automatically rule out the first (out of US). I have been to all except the first 2 in the past. I always have a dream to do a double header and the Lord gave me that opportunity.

Morning agenda-Naples half

I'm gonna sum it up Clint Eastwood style:

The good: completed goal (sub 2 hours), able to 'run' entire distance since not injured
The bad: the coldest race day of the year, morning drive to event
The ugly: took nearly 2 hours

Evening agenda-together we see eye run

Time for the Clint Eastwood synopsis:

The good: podium (2nd age)
The bad: hot (reversal of morning), tight & tired, not in top dozen
The ugly: 2nd worst time of the year (yep, worse than yesterday but with reason)

Monday agenda-MLK jr day

The recognized day for his birthday; have a happy one. As far as the day, yet another cold one but not quite as cold as the weekend. This was my first race walk for the year (normally, I start the year with one). Unfortunately for me, I was feeling tired and tight from the extremely active weekend. On top of that, top racewalker Juan Llanes was here for the first time that I can remember. I didn't see him at the start but by the first turn, he mysteriously caught up then surpassed me. He remained in the lead through the finish, with his wife jogging in toe. However, by the grace of God, I won the overall title! What a way to close out the weekend!

Magical weekend

Magical weekend. I dub it such because normally I do Disney. Last year, by the grace of God, I was able to complete my first marathon in 2 years despite major injury just days prior. However, other experience can be magical too; read on!

Saturday agenda-race!

Amazingly, a limited number of events today:

1. WDW half marathon
2. 10k panther prowl
3. Flippany 10k/5k
4. deans 5k

In order to mitigate costs, I passed on the former. I also ruled out the latter because it was just a fun run. With the remaining, I had to use one of my selection rules. I haven't done either event before; #3 was closest in proximity but the other was an inaugural. Guess which one I did?

Lets do this Clint Eastwood style:

The good:  won age group, finisher medal
The bad: drive to event, weather (light wind but humid)
The ugly: time, course (2nd half on gravel/hard packed sand)

This was magical for me as I rarely place in a 10k.

Sunday agenda-race!

1. WDW marathon
2. vista view 360
3. jcc 5k classic

In order to mitigate costs, I passed on the former. I am not ready for extreme distance nor was I invited on a team, so I chose the latter.

I heard of this event but don't remember ever doing it; then again, with the number of races I do and my increase in age, could've slipped my mind.

I might as well continue Clint Eastwood style:

The good:  won age group, time, top ten overall
The bad: medal (unless overall & master), weather (some wind and humidity)
The ugly: course (time doesn't count since a bit short, no clocks nor clear mile markers), only 1  overall & master title. for us guys, the overall winner was a female!

This weekend was magical for me as because the winning streak continues and so does the 'new' event one.

First weekend of 2014

First weekend of 2014 is upon us!

Saturday agenda-race!

Couldn't find much for the first Saturday of the year but anyway:

1. save the panther 5k
2. zoo half/5k

The latter makes the most sense (closest in proximity) but last month, I did 3 weekends in a row at that venue so I chose the former.

Coincidentally, this race was at a zoo (palm beach). It was my first time running there, so I was game. Most of the course was familiar (dreyer park) but started at zoo entrance then course basically ran in the opposite direction. Both the start and finish (last half in zoo) were new to me. Other than the wind, the weather was comfortable (upper 60). To my dismay, my time was the worst of the year and among that all time, but my age group position was on point since I won (after removing the top 3 overall and masters). Overall gender position was in the dirty dozen. By the grace of God, I made the podium.

Sunday agenda-race!

Couldn't find much for the first Sunday of the year either but anyway:

1. flamingo 5 miler
2. Davie pal 10k/5k

I stuck to tried and true, eliminating the former. It was my first time racing here (rodeo stadium). Other than that, nothing to write home about. Let's sum it up Clint Eastwood style:

The good: time better than yesterday, 2nd master (1st of the year), top ten
The bad: hidden humidity, time
The ugly: windy, time

Good post race; I had my favorite breakfast.

In with the new '14

Happy new year! In with the new '14. Wishing you all an active, injury free athletic year. I want to put all the bad experiences of last year behind and  move on to hopefully better ones this year. I shall cherish the positive memories of last year, but unfortunately, be compelled to deal with any lingering situations this year. Traditionally, we make resolutions, and like bones, they may be broken. My top ten list will include the usual, some will be continuations, some may be possible and some may be improbable, but it doesn't hurt to dream. Come to think of it, didn't Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr do that? Obama is certainly thankful.

Top ten resolutions for this year (not necessarily in order):

1. Continued athletic success, especially with racing and competition.
2. Health.
3. Wealth.
4. Wisdom.
5. Employment.
6. Training (stepped up).
7. Change.
8. Teamwork.
9. Diet.
10. Travel.

Now it's time to expound on those resolutions.

1. Last year, I did 102 races, which is less than the previous year. This was largely due to health issues, particularly the shoulder injury I suffered at the beginning of the year, plus the usual relationship issues, forcing me to divert my energies elsewhere; I'd prefer to be with someone. Although I'd like to match or beat my highest total of races in a single year, my main goal is continuation; march of last year marked 2 decades + 2 years since I began competing.
2. To do the aforementioned, I must maintain good health, largely through fitness and diet. That means I still won't smoke or drink, and naturally, do my best to avoid injury and illness.
3. This resolution has always failed but you never know; this might be the year. Maybe I'll get rich the easy way by winning in the powerball or the hard way with some breakthrough opportunity.
4. Hopefully, as I progress, this continues to improve. I made it this far through trial & error, & experiences. Thus far, 2 out of 3 (healthy, wealthy and wise) has been my case.
5. Since the quick fix (lottery) has thus far never panned out, I'll need to keep my job to survive.
6. To get the glory (race win), one must train. I plan to up the ante with quality workouts, such as speed work and long runs, which I have been notorious for missing.
7. Obama's slogan. He is the change America needs. However, I too, must utilize this. I revolve to make some adjustments in my normal scheme of things. Like Rick Scott says, 'let's get to work'.
8. I want to continue doing relays, both as a team captain and participant. In 2008, I eliminated most series participation, in lieu of individual events because I sacrificed too many running races that I loved the previous year. I will likely adhere to this resolution this year (limit to 2 series or less). However, I want to increase the number of individual relay races.
9. Continue and hopefully improve upon my nutritional regimen, such as my no meat diet.
10. I will travel as necessary, meaning doing only races that have some significance or purpose to me. I'll avoid just racing to race if it is far.

Today's agenda-1st race of the year

I usually do the run, walk, crawl 5k. I picked the middle option because it is extremely difficult to find a racewalk with awards. However, after I got ripped off (the guy given the title had jogged throughout and many witnessed that but the race director bought his bogus explanation that he learned a new walk technique) my overall win last year, with the insult to injury being that the cheater was put on a pedestal, I promised myself that if another opportunity arose, I'll take that; This was that year.

Conditions were not good. It drizzled throughout (did keep some of the heat down), was windy and humid. The already scheduled late start (11 am) was delayed due to registration. I wasn't even in the top ten when the race began but by the grace of God, I was in the mix. Although my time still stunk, it was good enough to beat all women and get me on the podium. I took a risk and fortunately, I got my first award of the year! Like Jon W, I contemplated a double header but my time/distance calculations convinced me it would not be wise (too much of a risk missing the 2nd race). He proved me wrong and won both events; congrats!

FYI

You may have noticed much of this blog seemed like a carbon copy of the previous year's post. Testament to how life can be similar yet different. Get out and run!
