Out with the old '16

Out with the old '16

This is the final day of this year, 2016. Kinda glad to see it go in many ways. Time to recap the year with Conan Obrien's top ten (not necessarily in order), Clint Eastwood style. *=Many are the same as last year. + is positive, - is negative (still bad).

10. I am still alive. +
9. Still a member of Runner's Depot! +
8. I completed (half of) the space coast marathon

9. Increase in number of races in which I did not place.-
8. I had to settle for less a few times in some races that were winnable.-
7. Linda AD, I remain a victim of false promises and other emotional games -.
6. Recession (yes, they say it's getting better, but I don't notice it personally yet). -
5. Struggles to get under 24 in races, worse, never got under 21 (excluding short events)
4. Injuries and other set backs -.
3. Increase in race fees/expenditures-
2. I failed to compete in some races due to heat exhaustion.
1. Cant get any sleep (parties and celebrations). -

The Ugly:

10. Miami Marlins seasons end without playoffs -.

8. Had record 2nd low in races July and august (5 total).
7. Increase in insurance, office closures.-
6. Credit card debt. -
5. No overall victories
4. struggle to race under 24
3. Lost (didn't place) in at least 13 races.-
2. The Miami heat didn't even appear in the NBA playoffs.-
1. Had record low in total races (second time under 100 in 8 years).-

Happy new year! See you next year.

PS: Most Ugly:

1. My mom passed away
2. Many celebrities died as well, including Muhammad Ali, Jose Fernandez.

Great news:

1. Cubs win MLB pennant after 108 year drought
2. 2 of krenson's kids having kids, 1 getting married
3. I got on the podium on the last day of this year (3 age).

Merry Christmas!

Merry Christmas! also, happy holidays, like Bob's birthday was Friday, Hanukkah began yesterday, Kwanzaa tomorrow. I couldn't find any races this weekend.

Saturday agenda-race?

No, but I did do the 12 miles of Christmas among hundreds of other athletes,

Sunday agenda-race?

Nope but I did a training walk (injured myself yesterday),

Jingle bell weekend II

Jingle bell weekend II has arrived. Prior to the weekend, on hump day evening, there was the coral springs holiday mile. I couldn't make that due to the distance and start time; besides, I don't measure up to the times required to place these days.

Saturday agenda-race?

Here is what I selected for this day:

1. Christmas Santa stroll 5k
2. delray beach jingle bell jog
3. its a wonderful run 5k
4. jingle bell jog (orig) 5k

When I was a spring chicken, I would've done the former as race #2, since it's a night race, despite the travel, to make a double header, but not! I cant hang with the latter; it is a high quality, high quantity event. I picked the next closest in proximity, #3. Clint time:

The good: podium, decent time under conditions
The bad: late start, no finisher medal, 3 age (I like to win)
The ugly: still sick, windy, some humidity

Sunday agenda-race?

1. Christmas sprint du/tri
2. wellington jingle bell run
3. lace 'em up on the levee 5k/10k
4. ft lauderdale jingle bell jog
5. Miami jingle bell jog

Although the furthest, I like the former but since still sick, I considered the rest (on the same coast). I went to the latter (closest in proximity) but the entry was exorbitant, so I ended up doing a training jog with Jeff Meyer. It was my first on the new course, which I didn't like. The ground was wet from previous rain.

Jingle bell weekend I

Jingle bell weekend I has arrived. Prior to the weekend, on hump day evening, there was the boca pal holiday mile. I couldn't make that due to the distance and start time; besides, I don't measure up to the times required to place these days.

Saturday agenda-race?

Here's what I found for this day:

1. Bonita springs ymca 5k
2. classics by the sea 5k/10k
3. river run 5k
4. jingle bell run ft laud
5. jingle bell run ymca

With enough local races, you can eliminate the former and skip the  next 2 (palm beach). Of the remaining, I picked the latter (closest in proximity). Clint Eastwood time:

The good: podium, finisher medals, first trophy of the year, cool weather, pancakes
The bad: wind, 2nd age (I like to win), no staple food (bananas, oranges)
The ugly: sick (affected time), age cat changed to ten

Sunday agenda-race?

1. Honolulu marathon
2. Jeff Galloway 13.1
3. cape coral marathon
4. run for tomorrow half/5k
5. burger king 5k

You can automatically rule out the former (out of FL). With enough local races, you can eliminate the the  next 2. The latter was closest in proximity but I wanted to do other. Unfortunately, due to illness, I didn't race at all. :(

First weekend of the month

First weekend of the month is already here! Let the 'holidays' begin! Yesterday was a rare Friday night race (bill bone Sandi 5k). I had the chance to do it (much like I did last month) but opted against the drive (long like to Cuba, being over 90 miles).

Saturday agenda-race?

1. race for hope 5k
2. pnc family challenge 5k
3. holiday family fun 5k
4. trikw (du/tri)

Forget about the latter; key west is too far south. Spencer, the runners depot team captain put on #3, plus it is closest in proximity. Glass time. Half:

Full: I did a double (5k and 1 mile) and finished both, on podium (3 age)
Empty: Weather was windy and got humid as the sun rose, 4th on results, walked once (5k=bad but chose to do so in the mile because I was burnt from the 5k)

Sunday agenda-race?

1. cayman islands marathon
2. Barbados marathon
3. rnr San Antonio marathon
4. palm beach marathon
5. 5k for the kids
6. bvf 5k

You can automatically rule out the first 3 (out of USA). I failed last week so strike #4 as well. I went to both of the remaining but didn't do any of them. What happened? I got spooked at the latter because I was told only 1 deep, drove to the other but didn't have enough time for it. I helped pace a friend then went back and found out I would've placed at the one at was at; I would not have where I paced. What a bummer!

Thanksgiving weekend is here!

Thanksgiving weekend is here!

thursday agenda-race!

First of all, happy thanksgiving! There are tons of races on this day, an athletes dream! I force to reduce the selection to the following, but could only pick one:

1, run 4 the pies
2. jcc turkey trot 5k
3. tamarac turkey trot
4. ft lauderdale  turkey trot
5. baptist  turkey trot
6. Thanksgiving day 5k

Believe it or not, I been there, done that for all except maybe #4. Well, I chose the latter, the furthest from home. Time for the eastwood synopsis:

The good: finished with a decent time (just under 23 officially), finisher medal, weather (mid 60)
The bad: finisher medals limited to 700 (1000+ people)
The ugly: didnt place even with top 5 age normal

friday agenda-race?

Not! unless you participate in the black friday madness. I am forced to miss that as I must return home on this day.

saturday agenda-race?

It's small business saturday but it was over shadowed by the death of fidel castro the previous night.

Here is what I found:

1. mr thanksgiving du/tri

I had to pass on that to prepare for the next day. Lots of history this day. For me, it is the day I would run the jingle down mainstreet in miami lakes but unfortunately, it was cancelled many moons ago. For all in miami and of cuba, fidel castro finally died at the age of 90.

sunday agenda-race?

I only considered doing the space coast marathon. It is the 4th of the series, 3rd for me since I got locked out of the first one. I really wanted to sign up for the half but it sold out (registration began while I was doing A1A marathon). Unfortunately for me, after wardrobe malfunction (dropped glasses at mile 2), I couldnt get back in my groove. I took the worm hole once again (half) but got the perks I paid for.

monday agenda-cyber monday

Well, I'm not getting involved with that.

Sunday, November 20, 2016

Championship weekend

Championship weekend is here. Why do I say that? NASCAR series champion will be crowned at the homestead speedway Sunday.

Saturday agenda-race?

1. delray beach turkey trot
2. merrill lynch bull run
3. steps for healing 5k

Well, I've been there, done that for all so I picked the latter-closest in proximity.

Clint, take it away:

The good: podium, time within top 5 this year, weather
The bad: 2nd age (I like to win), some wind, 8 am start
The ugly: didn't break 23, not in top dozen, medal

Sunday agenda-race?

1. Brooklyn marathon
2. fall classic half
3. purple stride 5k
4. rockin rib run 10k

You can automatically rule out the former (out of FL). I should have done the next one but I opted for the latter.

Eastwood time:

The good: didn't stop to walk, finisher medal, weather (except wind), swag bag
The bad: wind, time, field too fast to place
The ugly: parking, no podium

Friday, November 11, 2016

Veteran's day weekend

Veteran's day weekend is here! I found a race, formerly known as the midpoint bridge run, now veterans day 5k. It is a night race on the west coast; I passed on that this year.

Saturday agenda-race?

Here's what I found for this day:

1. st Augustine 5k/10k
2. heroes for education 5k
3. fantasy of lights 5k
4. heart in hand 5k
5. key largo bridge run half/5k/10k
6. Miami wild run and walk

I definitely skipped the former (north FL). I been there, done that on all remaining, so that is where I went. I had a chance at a double header mixing any with #3 but I am struggling just to do a decent 5k, so I passed on that.

Glass time! Half:

Full: finishers medal, top age, breakfast at golden corral, weather
Empty: late start, no overall or master, odd age (10 yr) groups (mine=45-54), only top age gets an award, paper certificate

Sunday agenda-race?

1. rnr las Vegas marathon
2. st Augustine half
3. loop around the lake 6k
4. ft lauderdale 13.1 marathon
5. Miami shores 5k
6. Miami man du/tri

You can automatically rule out the former (out of FL). With enough local events, I pass on the next. The closest in proximity was the latter but with no swimmer, forget the tri. I could do a du but only the half iron distance, which I am not ready to repeat at this time. I usually do the half but this time I opted for a 5k. Let's do this Clint style:

The good: podium, 7 seconds from '16 PR, decent weather
The bad: paper certificate, no finisher medal, 2 loops
The ugly: only top 2 overall, master (kind of good they even had), age group, parking harassment

In conclusion: paper certificate weekend. How cheap can you get?

Saturday, November 05, 2016

Fall back!

Fall back! No, not literally nor like in the military; it is daylight savings time (weekend)! We get an extra hour of sleep, or whatever. Prior to the weekend, there were a couple of races.

Thursday agenda-kvj 5k

Other than the corporate runs, I found a rare Thursday night race. Let me sum it up Clint style:

The good: finished, inaugural, tech shirt
The bad: weather (had been raining), travel (like to Cuba, 90+ miles), dark
The ugly: didn't place, travel (required leaving from work, gas, toll), no free food

Friday agenda-waterford 5k

Unfortunately, I had to pass due to time and location (near Miami airport) of event. I cant take off early back to back, plus parking is worse. Also, may affect the weekend.

Saturday agenda-race?

I found quite a few events prior to the time change:

1. rnr Savannah marathon
2. Disney wine and dine half marathon
3. steps for sos 5k
4. Venezuela 5k
5. mark overton run
6. sallarulos
7. 5k palmetto bay color run
8. humana 5k fun run

You can automatically rule out the former (out of FL). With enough local races, strike #2. I have a chance for a double header with either #2 or #7. I passed on the rest for the latter because, even though it was a fun run (no awards), it was free! Glass time! Half:

Full: finishers medal, free
Empty: no awards, time (too slow for a race walk), no tshirt

Sunday agenda-race?

I found some events after the time change:

1. NYC marathon
2. Malibu half marathon
3. ft Myers marathon
4. ironman tri panama city
5. sun capital half/5k
6. iRun 10k/5k
7. miracle walk and 5k run

You can automatically rule out the first 2 (out of FL). With enough local races, strike #3 and #4 (plus, no swimmer). The last 2 were in Miami, with the latter the closest in proximity. Of course, I picked the furthest; lol.

Ok, Eastwood time:

The good: podium (top age), 2nd best time of year, finisher medal, extra hour of sleep
The bad: wind, travel
The ugly: I miscalculated start time therefore less sleep, travel

Saturday, October 29, 2016

Trick or treat?

Trick or treat? It's Halloween weekend. Lots of events catered around that theme.

Saturday agenda-race?

1. 13.1 Charleston half marathon
2. phantom 5k
3. Miami beach half

You can automatically rule out the former (out of FL). The latter was closest in proximity but since i am no spring chicken, I am not ready to do 2 long distance races back to back like back in the day.

Treat: finishers medal, sub 25
Trick: lost 3 pl by about 20 seconds (probably due to the 1 time I walked)

Sunday agenda-race?

1. marine corps marathon
2. rocktoberfest 10 miler
3. spooktacular 5k
4. bal harbour 5k
5. freedom ride
6. hard rock half/10k/5k

You can automatically rule out the former (out of FL). I needed to do something long, so I passed on the 5ks. I usually do the 10 miler but I signed up for the latter and it was moved to this day due to hurricane Matthew.

Treat: finishers medal, 6 am start
Trick: windy & somewhat humid, after 2 miles, very dark due to no lights, my results not online.

Saturday, October 22, 2016

Ock 2 bray

Ock 2 bray. That's how October sounds in Spanish.

Saturday agenda-race?

Here's what I found today:

1. the great Floridian tri
2. wounded warriors 5k
3. every boob counts 5k
4. dash to fight cancer 5k
5. beer fest 5k

Forget about the former (I don't swim). I planned on #3 but picked the latter since it was an inaugural. Let's cut to the chase, Clint style:

The good: weather (less the wind), finishers medal, beer (for those who drink)
The bad: wind, cotton tshirt, parking
The ugly: didn't place (missed 3rd place age by 3 seconds gun, much more by net)

Sunday agenda-race?

Check out what's on the slate:

1. 70.3 iron man tri
2. wellington 10 miler/5k
3. fau homecoming 5k
4. parkland 5 mile/5k
5. run 4 life 5k

Forget about the former (I don't swim). I planned on the latter but chose #4. Glass time, half:

Full: time and age position better than previous day, finisher medal, weather, podium
Empty: wind, 3rd (I like to win), time

Saturday, October 15, 2016

Mid month crisis

Mid month crisis is here! Seems like I took a step backwards.

Saturday agenda-race?

1. schott 5k
2. ghost run 5k
3.light one's path 5k
4. race for the cure 5k
5. pursuit of honor 5k

I would've been blown away like the wind with the former. The next was far in relation to the remaining. This time, I stayed tried and true with the latter. Here I go Clint style:

The good: podium, finisher medal
The bad: external conditions (windy, drizzle), 3 ag (missed 2nd by 7 secs)
The ugly: internal conditions, time (10 secs slower and I would've been out), flooding where parked

Sunday agenda-race?

Most of the events are scheduled for this day:

1. Toronto marathon
2. Detroit marathon
3. key west half
4. elite 10 miler
5. grafiti run
6. florida paradise 5k
7. buddy walk
8. devil dog 5k
9. fired up 5k

You can automatically rule out the first 2 (out of FL). I passed on the next 5 since I decided on the last 2. Of those, I picked the latter because it was the closest and an inaugural.

Glass time. Half:

Full: Improved on yesterdays time, finisher medal
Empty: didn't place, external conditions (rain, humidity), entry fee

Saturday, October 08, 2016

Columbus day weekend

Columbus day weekend is here! Way back when, I discovered we don't get off at work, and thanks to hurricane Matthew, I discovered that all the local races were cancelled.

Saturday agenda-race? almost didn't happen but reaching out to the west coast:

1. Phillippi shores 7k
2. cops and joggers 5k
3. img academy 5k

I had a chance at a double header with former and any of the remaining but I struggled horribly with the former that I had to pass on the latter. Glass time. Half:

Full: completed my first 7k on the west side, 6 deep, decent start weather, post race activities
Empty: bad parking arrangements, 7th pl age, internal conditions, didn't give out finisher medals

Sunday agenda-race?

1. Chicago marathon

You can automatically rule out the former (out of FL + $). Therefore, I didn't race. However, I did get in 6 miles jogging.

Happy Columbus day, my friends!

Saturday, October 01, 2016

First weekend of October

First weekend of October is here!

Saturday agenda-race?

1. Goliath gauntlet obstacle race
2. Kale's 4 kids 5k

I passed on the former for a normal race, the latter. Time for the Clint synopsis:

The good: podium, 3rd fastest time of the year
The bad: 1 oa, no master, 3 ag (like to be #1)
The ugly: rain, windy, wet ground

Sunday agenda-race?

1. Florida west coast half and 5k
2. key Biscayne half and 10k
3. jog for dogs 5k
4. Dunn's run 5 mile/k
5. zoo run 5k

With enough local races, I passed on the former. I thought about the latter (closest in proximity) but I need to get in a long run. With the help of Roy, I did the key Biscayne half. Glass time:

Half full: completed my first half of the season
Half empty: horrible time (personal worst non injury, due to lots of walking)

Saturday, September 24, 2016

Fall!

Fall! It arrived officially this past Thursday. This is the last weekend of the month

Saturday agenda-race?

1. outrun hunger palm beach 5k
2. kidney pump 5k
3. zero prostate cancer 5k
4. teal 5k
5. st Jude walk run to end cancer 5k

With enough races closer to me, I passed on the first 2. The latter was closest in proximity but the only one I had no chance of placing. I picked an inaugural, teal 5k. Clint in a nutshell:

The good: internal conditions good, podium (3 ag), in bakers dozen, trophies, finisher medal
The bad: 8 am start, would've been 2nd age in normal group
The ugly: late start, hot and humid, changed to 10 year cat last minute, ran out of trophies

Sunday agenda-race?

1. Chicago half marathon
2. optime 5k
3. marlins 5k
4. escape to Miami tri

You can automatically rule out the former (out of FL). Scratch the latter since I have no swimmer. I wanted to do the marlin 5k but it was cost prohibitive so I went through the remaining. I had no chance but did finish. Unfortunately for me, my internal conditions were bad while the weather was ok prior to sun up.

Saturday, September 17, 2016

Last weekend of summer

Last weekend of summer is here!

saturday agenda-race?

Chock full of events today:

1. air force marathon (WA)
2. run against violence and crime 5k
3. friends of the poor 5k
4. naked feet 5k
5. miami children 5k
6. d. wade community ride

You can automatically rule out the former (out of FL). I decided on the latter, instead of racing, to support dwayne wade's cause. It was not a race but was a great atmosphere.

sunday agenda-race?

1. navy/air force half marathon (DC)
2. next step in the cure 5k
3. miami tunnel to tower 5k

You can automatically rule out the former (out of FL). I had a chance for a double header but passed on the latter due to cost and logistics (expo at 2 bayfront but race starts at seven elsewhere), choosing the cure 5k. clint eastwood style:

The good: top 10 male, top age (podium), pr for the month
The bad: hot and humid
The ugly: time, generic medal, didnt double

Saturday, September 10, 2016

911 weekend

911 weekend is here. That day is tomorrow but most avoid that for races.

Saturday agenda-race?

Most are put on today:

1. Jeff Anna's memorial 5k
2. coral springs remembrance 5k
3. tunnels to towers 5k
4. ups 5k

I planned on the former but appeared at the latter. Due to circumstance, I didn't actually race but did complete the distance.

Sunday agenda-race?

This day marks 15 years since that horrible attack on us, hitting several U.S. landmarks and killing thousands. Kudos to the first responders on that day and beyond. Here's what I found for racing:

1. fire hero 5k
2. trilogy du/tri bonus round

Pledging allegiance to my sponsor, runner's depot, I picked the former, rather than the latter. I knew I had no chance to place but I needed to show support. I had a good first mile then pulled back to not further my injury.

Saturday, September 03, 2016

First weekend of the month

First weekend of the month is here! So much going on. We are deep in preseason football, a cat 1 hurricane Hermine sweeps around Florida and hits the west side. Running season begins! Labor day follows.

Saturday agenda-race?

1. rnr Virginia beach half
2. power swim
3. save the jaguar 5k
4. mermaid day 5k

You can automatically rule out the former (out of FL) and the next (i am a land lover). I picked the latter because I never did it before. Clint time:

The good: podium, top age, finisher medal
The bad: heat, humidity, travel
The ugly: time

Sunday agenda-race?

1. labor day du/tri
2. king of the hill 5k

I passed on the former to do the latter. Eastwood time:

The good: finisher medal
The bad: heat, humidity, travel
The ugly: time, not even close to placing

I followed this with a visit to the weaver pig roast (8th annual, 2 shy of hill 5k) before the visit to my lady.

Monday agenda-race?

Happy labor day!

1. john clay 5k
2. canes cross country classic

I was still with my lady Cheryl, and since I'm no spring chicken, I decided to skip racing this day (no labor).

Saturday, August 27, 2016

Last weekend of the month.

Last weekend of the month is here! Hopefully, this also ends the racing drought.

Saturday agenda-race?

1. down2earth 5k/10k cross country run

I had to pass on it due to my mom's funeral. Prior, I rode my bike and a little on the treadmill.

Sunday agenda-race?

1. swim Miami
2. summers end 5k

Ya'll know I am like oil and don't mix with water; scratch the former. Due to the distance and weekend's activity, I have to pass on the latter as well. I did pull off a light run prior to taking my lady to the station to return home.

Saturday, August 20, 2016

Opening/Closing.

Opening/Closing. Closing ceremonies for the olympics are this weekend and opening ceremonies for school begin monday.

saturday agenda-race?

1. ft desoto du/tri
2. rampage 5k
3. cf climb

Unfortunately for me, I had to pass on all of the above due to obligations here at home. First, my mom's arrangements then training at my job for a new system to be put in use on the first day of school.

sunday agenda-race?

1. pikes peak marathon

You can automatically rule it out (out of FL), therefore, I didnt race. I got in 9 miles on my feet in the morning.

Saturday, August 13, 2016

Olympics!

Olympics! It actually started last week but I already submitted a different title. Any how, that occurs like U.S. presidency, every 4 years. On top of that, last night start pre season football! The dolphins won their game. There is still a drought in regards to racing.

Saturday agenda-race?

1. cape 5k
2. discrimination free zone 5k

Despite the races but opted out in preparation for tomorrow. I did some skating, sprints and walking as training.

Sunday agenda-race?

I found 1 event- trilogy #3 du/tri. Let me break it down Clint Eastwood style:

The good: finisher medal, podium
The bad: 3rd place (8 seconds from losing), wet ground, very windy
The ugly: personal worst time in all disciplines

Saturday, August 06, 2016

Back to school weekend

Back to school weekend is here to prepare the kids for school, tax free (*).

Saturday agenda-race?

1. Minnesota half marathon
2. tri siesta key & du
3. cobra country 5k
4. lifetime kick off 5k

You can automatically rule out the former (out of FL). I passed on the next since there were 2 events on my coast. I picked the latter since its closest in proximity. Take it away, Clint:

The good: got finishers medal
The bad: humid, windy
The ugly: time, didn't place

Sunday agenda-race?

Not! I couldn't find anything so train, it is. I skated 6 miles then jog/walk for over 40 minutes, some with a mystery partner.

* This year, the time frame was cut to 3 days (yesterday + this weekend). Top dollar cut from $100 to $60 and no computer or technology allowed.

Saturday, July 30, 2016

Last weekend of July

Last weekend of July has come!

Saturday agenda-race?

1. black girls run 5k
2. healthy adults run (track)

Unfortunately, I got sick so I chose not to travel to the former and I am definitely not ready for the latter. Even worse, I didn't train; pray for me.

Sunday agenda-race?

1. San Francisco marathon
2. Huntington's disease tri

You can automatically rule out the former (out of FL), leaving the latter. With no duathlon option, I would need a swimmer and do it as a relay, like last year. Sadly, I couldn't get one so I am forced to pass on it this year.

Saturday, July 23, 2016

Who lee oh!

Who lee oh! That's how this month sounds in Spanish. A rare race was held on Thursday called run, sweat and beers. Unfortunately, I didn't have enough time to get to boca from work,

Saturday agenda-race?

1. eagle lakes 5k
2. Hemingway days 5k

In my younger days, I may have pulled off a double header, despite the extreme distance of both events (1 and 2) and even make the podium; unfortunately, that is not the case now. Clint synopsis:

The good: found and completed a 5k
The bad: far, hot
The ugly: didn't place, no finisher medal

Sunday agenda-race?

no races. no training due to death of my mom; truly sad day. RIP to my mother.

Saturday, July 16, 2016

Mid month crisis

Mid month crisis (July) has arrived! Seems like the racing drought is getting worse!

Saturday agenda-race?

Here's what I could find today:

1. beat the heat 5k
2. fun fit 5k challenge
3. veterans 5k

I wanted the latter (closest in proximity) but couldn't get enough details on the race. I thought about the former but didn't feel like the drive and also know I'm not fast enough to place there right now. I picked the remaining because I never did it before and offered fit stops.

Sunday agenda-race?

Here's what I could find this day:

1. rnr Chicago half
2. trilogy du/tri 2

You can automatically rule out the former (out of FL). Due to expenses, I passed on the latter but attended as a volunteer. Later, I rode from that site west to the toll, turned around and went to bill baggs park entrance, turned around and returned to the race site. That journey lasted about an hour.

This weekend, I volunteered on both days, the former a little and the latter, a lot.

Summer sizzling!

Summer sizzling! Suffering with high humidity and heat (highs in 90's, +10 degrees with heat index). Summer (race) drought affects what I can choose.

saturday agenda-race?

Here's what I found this day:

1. ft. desoto du/tri

I couldnt find any local races (passed on that far one) so out come those inlines again.

sunday agenda-race?

Here's what I found on this day:

1. american sprint du/tri

Well, this time, I didnt pass on the distance. Check out the clint synopsis:

The good: podium, top age (actual)
The bad: heat, humidity, distance to race
The ugly: given 3rd age due to double dipping (top master & grand)

Independence weekend

Independence weekend has arrived! Prior to now, on Wednesday (last of June), I made it late to a vigil for the legendary Fred Franklin, who passed away on the last Sunday or Monday of June. I did a mile, especially since back was out.

Saturday agenda-race?

Here's what I found for the first Saturday of the month:

1. splash and dash 5k fun run

Guess which one I did? Unfortunately, no race as I found out the hard way, it was cancelled without notice! Instead, I walked (yep, back hurt) 3.8 miles at a park in Naples.

Sunday agenda-race?

Here's what I found for the first Sunday of the month:

Nada! I couldn't find any race this day so once again, train.  I walked (yep, back hurt) 2.4 miles.

Monday agenda-race?

Happy independence day! Almost every major city has a race on this day.

Here's what I considered for the first Monday of the month.

1. independence day 5k
2. star bangled 5k
3. Moe's 5k
4. independence day du/tri
5. weston 5k
6. solerunners 5k/10k

The latter makes the most sense because it was closest in proximity but I chose the former, which was the furthest on the list. Why? It was closest to my lady and was an inaugural. I re-injured my back on sunday so I wasnt certain I could even walk through the race. By the grace of God, I recovered enough to mostly jog and match the latest times Ive been getting. Take it away clint:

The good: podium, finisher
The bad: not in top 3 age (the lucky=5 was good enough to place)
The ugly: time, internal and external (hot and humid) conditions.

Last weekend

Last weekend of the month but first weekend of summer is here!

Saturday agenda-race?

Here's what I saw for the last Saturday of the month:

1. freedom 5k
2. triumph 5k
3. cason color 5k

I picked the former, tried and true. It turned out to be a low quantity, high quality race. Even with all those categories, the conditions, both internal and external (hot & humid), kept me from the podium. I got the dreaded 4th slot; I was pleased finishers medals were distributed.

Sunday agenda-race?

Here's what I saw for the last Sunday of the month:

1. kona marathon
2. oleta trail run

You can automatically rule out the former (out of FL). Not ready for the latter so I decided to train. I closed out the month by pulling out the inlines and skating followed by some sprints and walking.

I hope for a much better month coming up, even though the amount of races will decrease dramatically due to the summer heat.

Father's day weekend

Father's day weekend is here!

Saturday agenda-race?

Here's what I found for the day prior to that reserved for dads:

1. grandma's marathon
2. spartan race TX, NY
3. summer sizzler 5k
4. sugden stride 5k
5. run 4 the sea 4 miler

You can automatically rule out the first 2 (out of FL). Although still far, the latter was closest in proximity, therefore my choice.

I went into the event knowing I wouldn't place but felt the need to do it anyway. Glass time; glass half:

Full: finished, met time goal of sub 9 average pace.
Empty: didn't place, internal and external (heat, humidity) conditions.

Sunday agenda-race?

Here's what I found for the day that is reserved for dads:

1. rnr Seattle marathon
2. fathers day 5k
3. trilogy du/tri #1

You can automatically rule out the former (out of FL). The latter was closest in proximity, but due to my condition and expenses, I passed on that. Therefore, I did the remaining.

Clint Eastwood time:

The good: podium, finisher medal
The bad: walked 1 too many times (losing out on 2nd age)
The ugly: internal conditions, time

Honorable mention

* good=major assistance/support from mentor Linda
* bad=I got sick
* ugly=long time friend passed away (am Monday) from cancer

Saturday, June 11, 2016

Who knee oh!

Who knee oh! That's Spanish for June. Also, this weekend is near the mid month crisis.

Saturday agenda-race?

1. rap river run (5 mile and 5k)
2. running with the sharks 5k
3. singer island du/tri
4. run for the cops 5k

The former was the furthest and latter closest in proximity. Although still far, the latter was the best choice. Clint, take it away:

The good: podium, finisher medal
The bad: distance to race, heat and humidity
The ugly: poor time due to internal conditions

Sunday agenda-race?

1. grandma's marathon

You can automatically rule it out (out of FL), therefore, I didn't race. Instead, I did some training.

Saturday, June 04, 2016

Hurricane season

Hurricane season is upon us! June started on Wednesday, and so did the Hurricane season. It also was declared national run day and naturally, I participated in a fun run that night.

Saturday agenda-race?

Sadly, I begin with Mohammad Ali being pronounced dead at 74; he was the greatest (boxer) of all time.

Check out the schedule:

1. s. FL. hero's 6k
2. sun run 5k

I used this event to help pace a friend, therefore no award.

Sunday agenda-race?

Here's what's planned for this day:

1. rnr San Diego marathon
2. run for the ribbons

You can automatically rule out the former (out of FL), therefore I went to the latter. I used this as a recovery run, therefore no award.

So, unfortunately, I never made the podium thus far this month, a disaster like a hurricane.

Saturday, May 28, 2016

Memorial day weekend

Memorial day weekend is upon us! Surprisingly, not many races. Shot out to all those who gave the ultimate sacrifice to protect our freedom.

Saturday agenda-race?

I could only find 1 race-zoo 5k. Thankfully, it was also very close. Glass time! Half:

Full: podium (2nd age), clouds held down high heat
Empty: external conditions-rain at start about 10 min, 8 am start, humid, 10 yr age group, no finisher medals.
internal conditions-ankles, tired, adjustments required

Sunday agenda-race?

I could only find the fiu Biscayne bay tri. Without a swimmer, I was forced to pass on this one. Instead, I rode a bike 16+ miles.

Monday agenda-race?

memorial day! My sight was only on these;

1. Weston classic 5k
2. boca memorial 5k

In terms of proximity, the former is closer than the latter, although both a far to me. The Weston race is always chock full of people, a high quantity, high quality race, therefore, I knew I would not place. I had an ok start but began to struggle in the heat. After mile 2, I decided to walk in order to not further damage my injury. I finished with personal worst time this month but got the medal I set off for. I pray for better success, starting next month..

Saturday, May 21, 2016

My yo!

My yo! That's sound this month is pronounced in Spanish.

Saturday agenda-race?

This is what I considered for today:

1. keys 100, day 1
2. keiser university 5k
3. covenant house 5k
4. tour of the gables 5k
5. Miami walk for wishes 5k

If I need to walk in a 5k, you know I am not ready for long distance in the heat; the former is automatically eliminated. I planned on the next one, especially since its an inaugural but it was also the furthest so, not! The remaining are been there, done that. Therefore, I picked the latter (closest in proximity). Clint Eastwood synopsis:

The good: podium (top age), finisher medal, time better than last week
The bad: late start (8), internal conditions
The ugly: time, heat, no tshirt

Sunday agenda-race?

1. keys 100, day 2
2. one love fun run

I already addressed the former, so I chose the latter. Omar, founder of the trublmaica brand, arranged a monthly 'run' through the wynwood/overtown neighborhood. Usually, I race but since I found none, though I'd give it a try. Omar determines the course (can change) and it is an easy pace with various stops to take pictures or to allow walkers to catch up. A limited but decent post event spread was available.

Saturday, May 14, 2016

Mid month crisis

Mid month crisis is here!

Saturday agenda-race?

Here is what I considered this day:

1. live like jake 5k
2. save the tiger 5k
3. Eric patrie 5k

All of the above was located in palm beach county. I made the tough decision not to race due to both the distance and my internal conditions. I pulled out my inlines and did 6 miles, followed by 1+ mile walk.

Sunday agenda-race?

Here is what I found for this day:

1. tri Miami du/tri
2. Miami clean 5k
3. twilight run
4. go run 5k

You can scratch the former-no swimmer, no tri and with recent struggles with 5k, no du. #3 is a night race. Both of the remaining are inaugural events, so I picked the latter (closest in proximity).

Morning agenda-go run 5k

Clint Eastwood synopsis:

The good: podium, finisher medal, 2nd age by the clock
The bad: 3nd age by net time (missed by 5 seconds)
The ugly: time, injury, heat

Evening agenda-twilight run

No award because I used this event solely for additional training. I decided to race walk to not further injure myself. It was even hotter at this event.

Saturday, May 07, 2016

Mother's day weekend

Mother's day weekend is here! Cinco de Mayo was this past Thursday.

Saturday agenda-race?

Here's what I considered for the first Saturday of the month:

1. ft desoto du/tri
2. women 4 women 5k/10k
3. big cardio 5k
4. catch'em if you can 5k
5. hugs for hope 5k
6. Lou Gehrig's disease

Normally, the latter would be the best choice as it is closest in proximity, but instead, I did #3, formerly known as run for roses. Let's do this glass style.

Glass half:

Empty: bad time due to injury, wind
Full: podium, finisher's medal, won a top prize in the raffle

Sunday agenda-race?

Here's what I found on mother's day:

1. mothers day 5k

Can you guess where I went? A strange twist of fate happened. The race announcer broadcast that anyone willing to volunteer who get 2 races free in the future. Considering that I am still injured, I went with that. I jog/walked nearly 2 miles light. Afterwards, visited my parents, bearing gifts for mom.

Saturday, April 30, 2016

Transition weekend

Transition weekend is here! Prior to today, Thursday was Miami's largest 5k (corporate run). Friday was TGi5k. Today is the last day of the month and passover!

Saturday agenda-race?

This is what I considered for the last day of the month:

1. Kentucky derby marathon
2. stomp out child abuse 5k/10k
3. father o'reilly 5k

You can automatically rule out the former (out of FL). I decided on the latter (closest in proximity). Let's try this glass style. Glass half,

full: podium, first award in new age category, flat course
empty: no finisher medal, internal condition, personal worst time

Sunday agenda-race?

This is what I considered for the first day of the month:

1. Toronto marathon
2. Tacoma city marathon
3. westglades 5k
4. Cleveland 5k

You can automatically rule out the first 2 (out of FL/USA). I decided on the latter (closest in proximity). Due to aggravating an ankle injury, I couldn't compete but did complete the course walking.

Let's try this glass style. Glass half,

full: finishers medal, flat course
empty: internal condition, personal worst time

Saturday, April 23, 2016

Passover

Passover weekend is here! Yesterday was earth day.

Saturday agenda-race?

Here is what I considered:

1. DTR endurance half
2. urban youth impact 5k
3. glory run 5k
4. ficpa 1040k 5k/10k

Forget about the former; not ready for hot long runs. The latter was closest in proximity but I picked the next closest, #3. Clint, take it away:

The good: finisher medal
The bad; heat
The ugly: internal conditions, time

Sunday agenda-race?

This is what I thought of:

1. The big sur marathon
2. down 2 earth half/10k/5k
3. out run cerebral palsy
4. rugged runner challenge
5. run from the rays 5k
6. MADD dash
7. sponsor an athlete 5k

Eliminate the former (out of FL). I'm not ready for trail runs so skip the next. This time, I picked the latter because it was closest in proximity. Due to internal conditions, I decided to walk the 5k, thereby eliminating myself from podium contention. To my dismay, no finisher medals.

Unfortunately, I passed over the podium because I didn't place at any event.

Post birthday weekend

Post birthday weekend is here! This is the first weekend that I race under the 50-54 category; it already changed per USAT standards. Note: I was so excited, I forgot to post ON my birthday!

Saturday agenda-race?

Here is what I considered for the first Saturday after my birthday:

1. ft desoto tri
2. brave children 5k
3. shake, rattle, run
4. st Thomas 5k
5. doral 5k
6. sunsmart 5k
7. ives 5k

Without a swimmer, I had to pass on the former, plus it was the furthest of events. Of the aforementioned, I  never did #2  (inaugural) and don't remember the 3rd. Now to choose from the tried and true. Although not the closest in proximity, I picked the latter.

Check it out Clint style:

The good: completed first cross country 5k in new age group
The bad: course, no finisher medals, no trophies for any qualifier
The ugly: internal conditions, time, no hardware (missed the podium)

Sunday agenda-race?

Here is what I considered for the first Sunday after my birthday:

1. star wars half
2. chimpathon 16k
3. Mandel jcc bagel dash
4. multiple myeloma 5k

I passed on the former (furthest). With a couple of 'local' events, I skipped the next. Of the remaining, I chose the latter. Please note, the last 2 were in palm beach county.

Check it out Eastwood style:

The good: beat previous day's time, finisher medal, 7 am
The bad: some wind, distance to race
The ugly: internal conditions, time, no hardware (missed the podium)

Monday agenda-Boston marathon

Good news: I am off
Bad news: not going

Glass time, half:

full: completed 2 races under new category (jack of all trades)
empty: no hardware (missed the podium) in all events (master of none)

Saturday, April 09, 2016

Pre birthday weekend

Pre birthday weekend is here! This is the last weekend that I race under the 45-49 category; it already changed per USAT standards.

Saturday agenda-race?

Here is what I considered for the last Saturday before my birthday:

1. rnr Raleigh marathon
2. singer island half/10k
3. thin mint sprint 5k (Hollywood)
4. fight for air climb
5. 7 mile bridge run

You can automatically rule out the former (out of FL) and the latter (entry difficult). Currently, I'm having enough trouble with 5ks so the latter and #2 is out. #4 is not a running race so I did the remaining.

Check it out Clint style:

The good: podium!
The bad: course, no finisher medals
The ugly: internal conditions, time

Sunday agenda-race?

Here is what I considered for the last Sunday before my birthday:

1. thin mint sprint 5k (wpb)
2. motion for the ocean 5k
3. rainbow run
4. Krista Marie touch of love 5k
5. paradise coast half/5k

I passed on the former and latter (furthest). I wound up taking the middle since it was an inaugural.

Check it out Eastwood style:

The good: beat previous day's time, finisher medal
The bad: some wind, parking
The ugly: no tshirts (including after the race), age groups, internal conditions, 2 & 3 age not ready

Unfortunately for me, not a great close out in the age group since I lost. For the record, I would've been 3rd with normal age group instead of 8th with the 41-50. In hindsight, I should've done the latter (would've been 1st with the same done I had).

Saturday, April 02, 2016

First weekend of April

First weekend of April is here!

Saturday agenda-race?

Here is what I considered for the first Saturday of the month:

1. run for the turtles 5k
2. children's home society 5k
3. 5k for a better day
4. superintendents 5k
5. habitat for humanity 5k

The latter was closest in proximity and would've been the best chance to place but I had already decided on #3. Under normal circumstances, it was a good selection but unfortunately for me, I haven't recovered and the weather didn't help

Now for Clint style:

The good: finished
The bad: no finisher medal, late start
The ugly: didn't place, very hot weather

Sunday agenda-race?

Here is what I considered for the first Sunday of the month:

1. thin mint sprint 5k
2. gumbo limbo 10k
3. all American marathon
4. pill box flamingo strut 5k
5. goldcoast track meet
6. south beach tri

A double header with a pm event #5 was possible but I'm not ready for that at this time. I had to pass on the latter since I don't swim. The former was the furthest of the local races. I decided on #4.

Now for Eastwood style:

The good: podium! hot breakfast
The bad: a bit windy, fee, no bananas nor oranges
The ugly: internal conditions, time, ran out of aps, causing race delay.

Saturday, March 26, 2016

Easter weekend

Easter weekend is upon us! Yesterday was good friday. Personally, it doesnt seem good that our savoir was crusified but it was his plan to save us of our sins and I am thankful of that.

saturday agenda-race?

Most events were squeezed into today since tomorrow is considered off limits:

1. rooneys 5k
2. race for womens wellness half/5k
3. egg hunt du/tri
4. fairchild palms 5k

The former was the furthest and the latter, the closest in proximity. Even though I could do the du, I wanted to get in a long overdue distance run.

I actually miscalculated the start time for the half, so I began dead last 20+ minutes. I had to get a 5k number in order to participate. Injury affected how I could complete this event. Original plan was 7/6 ratio (jog/walk) but I went the extra mile and jogged 8 non stop, 1 easy walk, 3 racewalk then final jog/walk till done. Weather was humid, hot after sunrise.

sunday agenda-race?

No one dared to schedule an event this day (at least locally). This day was set aside to recognize and honor the rising of jesus christ.

Saturday, March 19, 2016

Spring equinox weekend

Spring equinox weekend is upon us! On top of that, palm Sunday is tomorrow.

Besides races, there's a lot of other activities worth mentioning:

1. dade county youth fair began Thursday, goes through this weekend into next month
2. Ultra music festival
3. jazz in the gardens
4. Miami beach home show

Saturday agenda-race?

Here is what I had on my list:

1. clewiston sugar festival 5k
2. running with Danny 5k
3. hbcu Greek 5k
4. hoofin it 4 hope 5k

With enough local races, didn't need to do the former. Unfortunately, I couldn't race any because of needed vehicle repair. After all, I cant get to the races safely without my car operating properly.

Sunday agenda-race?

Here is what I had planned for the first day of spring:

1. Georgia marathon
2. Excalibur 10 miler
3. hearts at work 5k
4. run walk for paws 5k

I automatically passed on the former (out of FL). Normally, I would one of those locals races but opted for #2 instead (part of a series).

I set a minimum goal of 1:40 and beat that by 2 minutes. I knew I would place but was pleased to finish and get my medal. It was a part of a series, so this was the first of 4. I was happy to escape without injury.

Saturday, March 12, 2016

Daylight saving time weekend

Daylight saving time weekend is here! We 'spring forward' losing an hour of sleep.

saturday agenda-race?

Here is what I considered for the last day before the time change:

1. celtic 4 miler
2. shamrock 10 miler & 5k
3. daniels dash 5k
4. outrun 5k
5. wild stampede 5k

Im having enough trouble with 5k's so I passed on the first 2. Even though the latter was the closest in proximity, my girl friend selected #4 since it is along hollywood beach. After the long drive and some warm up,  I realized I wouldnt be able to run this (injury too great). I walked a bit the lady then left.

sunday agenda-race?

Here is what I considered for the first day after the time change:

1. sarasota half
2. las olas triathlon
3. strive 5 for the hive 5k
4. co awareness run
5. ft lauderdale shamrock run
6. cooper city 5k
7. run with the rabbi 5k
8. tribute to the military

With enough local races, I passed on the former. Without a swimmer, forget about #2. A double header was possible with any of the remainder plus the latter but after some rain and my schedule, I had to miss the latter. I wound up at #7.

This event was used to feel out the injury and also help an aspiring young athlete complete yet another race; I killed 2 birds with one stone.

Now, I need to spring forward to next week and onward and actually race.

Saturday, March 05, 2016

March madness

March madness is upon us! However, I am not just talking about NCAA basketball.

saturday agenda-race?

Here is what I considered for the first saturday of the month:

1. orlando marathon
2. marathon of the treasure coast 5k
3. best damn race 13.1, 10k, 5k
4.  battle frog obstacle 8k
5. hunger run
6. st patricks festival 5k
7. sombrero beach run
8. march for cancer 5k
9. live like bella 5k
10. hope 4 a cure 5k
11. festival 5k

With enough local races, I automatically passed on the first 3. I am having enough trouble with running, so forget about #4. Even though the latter was closest in proximity, I picked #10 since I never ran at marlins park (stadiium).

Clint style:

The good: new venue, finisher medal, entry fee
The bad: parkingk start time
The ugly: the course (ran on narrow paths with many inclines and through the parking garage leading up), confusion (kid volunteer gave bad directions) caused many dq's (including me)

sunday agenda-race?

Here is what I considered for the first sunday of the month:

1. marathon of the treasure coast
2. hooter half
3. fl brain cancer 5k
4. kendras kisses 5k
5. voices against brain cancer
6. 13.1 marathon + 5k

With enough local races, I automatically passed on the first 2.

Clint style:

The good: signed up and helped cheryl with first ever face
The bad: course changed without online notice
The ugly: no finisher medal as promised online.

Saturday, February 27, 2016

Last weekend of February

Last weekend of February is upon us!

Saturday agenda-race?

Here's what I considered for the last Saturday of the month:

1. race for the arts 5k
2. safe walk 5k
3. sistrunk 5k
4. church by the glades 5k
5. uncf 5k
6. purple strides 5k

Unfortunately for me, I had to forfeit all racing today due to necessary repair to my vehicle.

Sunday agenda-race?

Here's what I considered for the last Sunday of the month:

1. wellington colorfest 5k
2. embrace half/5k
3. tour de broward
4. Samantha's purpose 5k

I never planned on the former. #3 was a ride but did include a 5k; passed on that. I really wanted #2 but picked the latter (closest in proximity). Glass time:

Half full: This was a low quantity, low quality race. Weather (less the wind) was nice. finisher medal.
Half empty: wind, I was at my worst. wack age category (45-54), late start (1/2 hr later than on website).

I closed out the month horribly. I hope I can leap past this and start making the podium again.

Monday agenda-race?

No, but a rare day (2/29) as we are in a leap year!

Saturday, February 20, 2016

Feh brer oh! That's kind of how February sounds in Spanish.

Saturday agenda-race?

Here is what I thought about for today:

1. gasparilla distance classic
2. riverbend 5k
3. funky fun run 5k
4. riverwalk
5. run in the gardens 5k
6. sunlife ride

The former is a 2 day event but I been there, done that so I passed on the travel. I skipped the latter because its not a race (ride). I planned on a double header with #5 and #3 but couldn't due to an appointment. I instead rolled an easy 2 on my inlines.

Sunday agenda-race?

1. central park marathon
2. el paso marathon
3. gasparilla distance classic
4. surfside beach 5k

You can automatically rule out the first 2 (out of FL). Based on what you read thus far, guess what I did?

Except for some wind, external conditions were great. Although not a fan of sand courses, it was the least of worries this day. Unfortunately, my internal conditions were terrible. By the grace of God, I got the last slot on the podium for my age group. I was praying the results I first saw lasted through the ceremony, and luckily it did, unlike some previous races.

Saturday, February 13, 2016

Cool holiday weekend

Cool holiday weekend is here! Sunday is valentines day and Monday, presidents day. However, for me, no extra time off.

Saturday agenda-race?

1. ft lauderdale valentines day 5k
2. race for faith 5k
3. barrier free 5k
4. healthy heart 5k/10k
5. run wild 5k

I never been to the former except for the venue (I don't like the location). I would normally do the latter (closest in proximity) but decided on #4. Check it out Clint style:

The good: podium, weather, finisher dog tag, hot breakfast
The bad: time, injury
The ugly: was first on the board then dropped to 2nd age at award ceremony

Sunday agenda-race?

Happy valentines! Here's what I saw:

1. la marathon
2. a1a marathon and half

You can automatically rule out the former. Guess which event I did? I volunteered to be the anchor leg in the 4:30 marathon pace group. Check this out glass style:

Half full: weather (60-69). finished around 4:30 (+2 over), finisher medal, minimal injury
Half empty: weather (windy), small blister on left big toe, clock and watch didn't match (pace off +2)

Saturday, February 06, 2016

Super bowl weekend

Super bowl weekend is here!

Saturday agenda-race?

There will be a lot of pre-game pomp and circumstances. Well, this is the pre day of events I considered:

1. run to the rescue 5k
2. st Thomas alumni fun run
3. the orchid 5k
4. walk for wishes 5k
5. eagle 5k

I chickened out and picked the latter (closest in proximity). Check it out Eastwood style:

The good: finisher medal, weather (cool, low wind), 3rd age on prelim list
The bad: only 1 oa, no master, bumped out to 4th
The ugly: internal conditions, pw on time, insult to injury-got home and found out knocked to 5th

Sunday agenda-race?

Before settling down to watch the big game, gotta exercise! Question is, which event to do?

1. I care, I cure, I run 5k
2. butterfly run
3. super bowl 5k/10k
4. run through central park

I have done the first 2 before. I would've liked the next because its an inaugural but had to do the latter because it is a team sponsored race. To my dismay, I couldve placed in all but the one I was in. It's Clint synopsis time:

The good: finisher medal, weather (cold), felt better and time faster than previous day
The bad: only 1 master, windy
The ugly: not even close to the podium, internal conditions

This weekend was far from super for me; no hardware.

Final weekend of January

Final weekend of January is upon us!

Saturday agenda-race?

Here's what I considered for the last Saturday of the month:

1. soldier rush
2. kids hero 5k
3. shape of a win 5k
4. 5k4kids

I wasn't interested in obstacles, so skip the former. I decided on the latter. Check it out Clint style:

The good: podium, cold weather, no wind
The bad: cold weather, 3 ag, no true master (filled up with grand)
The ugly: time, fee

Sunday agenda-race?

Here's what I considered for the last Sunday of the month:

1. pta 5k
2. fd now 5k
3. madd 5k

The good: finished, picture on flyer, weather
The bad: course, time
The ugly: lost (internal conditions), only 1 oa, no master

I closed out the month on a bad note but pray things will be better next month.

Winter wonderland!

Winter wonderland! This weekend, especially Sunday, will be not only the coldest of the year, but since last year!

Saturday agenda-race?

Here's what I found for today:

1. yls 5k run through history
2. delta race for health 5k
3. tropical 5k

I normally do the latter but I decided to try something different, #2. Quite a mistake. Gotta do this Clint style:

The good: finished
The bad: tshirt after race if not pre registered, no finisher medals
The ugly: age categories-only 1 oa then 20 year age, my time

Due to the ugly, instead of top age (despite dismal run), I was 7th. If normal, top 3 and master win & pulled from lower groups.

Sunday agenda-race?

1. Miami marathon
2. Davie road race
3. Honda classic (rain date)

I felt the need to do distance, which turns out to be the first half of the year.

The good: cooler weather, medal (finished)
The bad: coldest in Miami marathon history, the new course (more bridges)
The ugly: personal worst half, injury issues prior to race.

MLK jr weekend

MLK jr weekend is upon us. Other than Jesus Christ, he is a true hero. With the blessing of God, he spawned radical, positive change to a racist society, who chose to ignore what was in the constitution and the bible, as far as I am concerned, in regards to equal rights and fair treatment to all humans, just based on skin color.

Saturday agenda-race?

These are the events I on my radar today:

1. st Pete beach classic 5k/10k
2. Bahamas marathon (and 4p relay/half/5k) weekend
3. ringling bridge run
4. MLK neon night/5k
5. Miramar pines rotary 10k/5k
6. human run
7. kidney pump 5k
8. dolphin dash 5k
9. MLK 5k (Naples)

You can automatically rule out the second (out of US). Being a God fearing and praising man, race for faith got my attention. Usually, I do #5 but with my lady doing the big move, I was forced to pass on it this year, despite the convenience. I planned on the latter when it was posted last year but when it came time to register this year, it was no longer on the schedule, so I couldn't do it. In fact, I had to pass on all events this day.

Instead, I took it easy and did the WINK news end hunger walk, held at miromar outlets. I literally found out about this on TV last night. I walked with Cheryl and when done, it was only 1 1/4 mile route through the mall and parking lot.

Sunday agenda-race?

These are the events I selected for this day:

a. Bahamas marathon (and 4p relay/half/5k) weekend
b. gift of life 5k
c. bay harbour islands 10k/5k
d. Naples half
e. honda classic 5k
f. key west half and 5k

You can automatically rule out the former (out of US). By the grace of God, I have a long streak of going Naples half, so the latter and all else is automatically eliminated. Unfortunately, for the first time in the history of the event, it was cancelled due to the weather; Also, e. was as well. Although I believe that with a delay (most severe conditions left the area), the race was possible, based on condition an hour prior, it would be understandable (heavy wind and rain, tornado warning and lightning).

Monday agenda-Martin Luther King jr 5k

Clint style synopsis:

The good: top 3, beat Juan again, time improved
The bad: originally skipped at award ceremony, still injured
The ugly: lost overall in .1 by 1 second

This race became what I hoped to avoid due to my injury-a challenge. In a nutshell, I battled to stay with Juan until we both got passed at mile 2. After that, I switched off to the other, using the same strategy, until mile 3. We both picked up the pace but I failed to hold on due to my right knee. Afterwards, I was told by a friend that he was a former Cuban Olympian. I can accept the loss better with that info.

Disney marathon weekend

Disney marathon weekend is upon us! For those who have the time and money do to the ultimate challenge, you picked up packets Wednesday, ran fun runs on Thursday and yesterday before this big weekend began. I drew the line with the goofy challenge.

Saturday agenda-race?

1. WDW half marathon
2. HITS triathlon (various distances, from novice to full)
3. save the panther 5k
4. Brandon's 5k
5. flipany 5k/10k

Due to expenses, I passed on the former (all WDW events). With no swimmer, I skipped the tri. #3=been there, done that. Of the remaining, which I don't remember doing, I chose the latter (closest in proximity).

My first Clint Eastwood synopsis of the year:

The good: podium, top ten (4 oa) & master, cooler weather
The bad: medal, 5k start later (7:45)
The ugly: no master title, course confusion

Sunday agenda-race?

1. WDW marathon
2. jcc 5k
3. HITS triathlon (various distances, from novice to full)
4. vista view 360 ultra (6 hr)

With no swimmer, I skipped the tri. I planned on #2 but realizing I need to increase long runs, I picked the latter. Also, it was officially my first ultra trail run. Each lap is about a mile and quarter. I completed 20 (say 21), which is nearly a marathon. Fortunately, I got a finishers medal to prove it. The course was difficult, with many hills. Already injured, my feet and ankles suffered. I made the dirty dozen.

First weekend of the year

First weekend of the year is upon us! Unfortunately, couldn't really find any event.

Saturday agenda-race?

I found the bridge buster 5k but with the travel required and current injuries, I opted for training. I got in my first long run of the year (14 miles).

Sunday agenda-race?

I found the Jacksonville half. Since that is too long a drive, I did some cross training instead. First, inline skate 10k. next, racewalk 2+ miles, including lame sprints. Afterwards, couple of better sprints.

It was a disappointing start of the year (excluding new year's day).

In with the new '16

In with the new '16

Happy new year! In with the new '16. Wishing you all an active, injury free athletic year. I want to put all the bad experiences of last year behind and  move on to hopefully better ones this year. I shall cherish the positive memories of last year, but unfortunately, be compelled to deal with any lingering situations this year. Traditionally, we make resolutions, and like bones, they may be broken. My top ten list will include the usual, some will be continuations, some may be possible and some may be improbable, but it doesn't hurt to dream. Come to think of it, didn't Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr do that? Obama is certainly thankful.

Top ten resolutions for this year (not necessarily in order):

1. Continued athletic success, especially with racing and competition.
2. Health.
3. Wealth.
4. Wisdom.
5. Employment.
6. Training (stepped up).
7. Change.
8. Teamwork.
9. Diet.
10. Travel.

Now it's time to expound on those resolutions.

1. Last year, I did 81 races, which is less than the previous year. This was largely due to health issues, plus the usual relationship issues, forcing me to divert my energies elsewhere; I'd prefer to be with someone. Although I'd like to match or beat my highest total of races in a single year, my main goal is continuation; march of last year marked 2 decades + 4 years since I began competing.
2. To do the aforementioned, I must maintain good health, largely through fitness and diet. That means I still won't smoke or drink, and naturally, do my best to avoid injury and illness.
3. This resolution has always failed but you never know; this might be the year. Maybe I'll get rich the easy way by winning in the powerball or the hard way with some breakthrough opportunity.
4. Hopefully, as I progress, this continues to improve. I made it this far through trial and error,  experiences. Thus far, 2 out of 3 (healthy, wealthy and wise) has been my case.
5. Since the quick fix (lottery) has thus far never panned out, I'll need to keep my job to survive.
6. To get the glory (race win), one must train. I plan to up the ante with quality workouts, such as speed work and long runs, which I have been notorious for missing.
7. Obama's slogan. He is the change America needs. However, I too, must utilize this. I revolve to make some adjustments in my normal scheme of things. Like Rick Scott says, 'let's get to work'.
8. I want to continue doing relays, both as a team captain and participant. In 2008, I eliminated most series participation, in lieu of individual events because I sacrificed too many running races that I loved the previous year. I will likely adhere to this resolution this year (limit to 2 series or less). However, I want to increase the number of individual relay races.
9. Continue and hopefully improve upon my nutritional regimen, such as my no meat diet.
10. I will travel as necessary, meaning doing only races that have some significance or purpose to me. I'll try to avoid just racing to race if it is far.

Today's agenda-1st race of the year

I usually do the run, walk, crawl 5k. I always picked the middle option because it is extremely difficult to find a racewalk with awards. However, after I got ripped off (the guy given the title had jogged throughout and many witnessed that but the race director bought his bogus explanation that he learned a new walk technique) my overall win 2 years ago, with the insult to injury being that the cheater was put on a pedestal, I promised myself that if another opportunity arose to do something else, I'll take that. Well, this year, I decided to return to the former.

I had 2 choices this year:

1. 8 am-run, walk, crawl 5k
2. 9 am-resolution 5k

I did the latter last year, so back to the former.

Conditions were very humid (100). Thankfully, It was partly cloudy, which did keep some of the heat down; there was some wind. I had a good start for the first mile but took some loss in the 2nd but still within my range. However, the humidity proved too much after mile as I struggled to keep up with the eventual race walk winner. By the grace of God, I retained the 2nd overall position and fortunately, I got my first award of the year!

FYI

You may have noticed much of this blog seemed like a carbon copy of the previous year's post. Testament of how life can be similar yet so different.
