Out with the old '11

Out with the old '11

This is the final day of this year, 2011. Kinda glad to see it go in many ways. Time to recap the year with Conan Obrien's top ten (not necessarily in order), Clint Eastwood style. *=Many are the same as last year. + is positive, - is negative (still bad).

The good:
10. I am still alive. +
9. Still a member of Runner's Depot! +
8. I finally broke a year long drought by squeaking under 19 in the S. FL fair 5k today!
7. Got 2 overall victories plus successfully defended elite series 5k title.
6. Thanks to Berta, I was involved in the inaugural 'key to key' ragnar relay, 196 miles!
5. The beauty (Rachelle) & a beast (me) were 2nd overall team at princess half.
4. Do Tri Harder wins Broward Championship Series
3. I completed 7 halves + 1 half relay within the 1st quarter of the year.
2. Florida Fleet Elite relay team successfully defends overall Trilogy duathlon title. +
1. I formed a 1 time du team @ race the troops where Julie ran the 1st leg & I did the rest; we won!

The bad:
10. Car problems.
9. Prior to today, even though I got a personal best 19:09 of the year at memorial 5k, I did not place.
8. I had to settle for 2nd overall a few times in some races that were winnable.
7. Linda AD, I remain a victim of false promises & other emotional games -.
6. Recession (yes, they say it's getting better, but I don't notice it personally yet). -
5. Struggles to get under 19 in races, worse, to stay under 20 -.
4. Injuries and other set backs -.
3. 1st year I did not do any marathon (less the black out year).
2. Got sick during final relay of the year.
1. Cant get any sleep (parties & celebrations). -

The Ugly:
10. Miami Dolphins seasons end without playoffs -.
9. Extreme difficulty forming teams as a team captain -.
8. My last relay team was first time I ever failed a team by not completing my leg, due to illness.
7. No raises, office closures. -
6. Credit card debt. -
5. Lost master title to Leo due to injured that occurred half mile into race.
4. Began late in veterans day race (mistimed after using restroom).
3. Lost (didn't place) in at least 2 races.
2. Failed to break 2 hours in a half (13.1 NY).
1. Despite having the big 3 (LeBron James, Dwayne Wayne & Chris Bosh), Miami heat lose NBA championship!

Happy new year! See you next year.

Merry Christmas 2011!

Merry Christmas 2011! However, I do have the Christmas blues as there were no races scheduled for this weekend; boo hoo.

Friday agenda-roll

I decided to pull out my roller blades on a rare day off & do 12 miles.

Saturday agenda-ride

I joined the Elite ride but got dropped going toward Virginia key (about half the total group ride). why? I decided at last minute & used my steel training bike without optimal air in tires plus it was windy. I returned back to store solo.

Sunday agenda-run

Merry Christmas ! I ran from home through the park (L & P, site of Miami man) and back. Felt tight & sluggish so it took over an hour even though way less than a 15k. Day started off terrible because:

1. net down
2. ear plugs went bad mile into run
3. internal & external (wind & humidity)

However, there were bright spots to the weekend. Saw family (in town) yesterday, friends today. One was a Christmas breakfast while the other a night time affair.

Triple header finale!

Triple header finale! This is last time I can cram a lot of races this year.

Saturday agenda-race!

A plethora of races:

1. Florida half marathon (+5 & 10k)
2. Marco island 5 mile hill run
3. classics by the sea
4. river run
5. n creek explorer 5k
6. turn on the light 5k

By remaining in my normal tri county area, #1 & 2 were automatically ruled out. Next, I cut out the furthest left (#3) even though I been there, done that. Don't remember why but I selected the last one.

Morning agenda-turn on the light 5k

This was part 1 of a double header. To make a long story short, I couldn't hang so I had to settle for 2nd best master. By the grace of God, I still made the top ten despite barely breaking 20.

Evening agenda- n creek explorer 5k

This caps off the day in terms of races. Unfortunately, the race prior with the wait for this one hindered my performance somewhat as reflected with the time. Praise the Lord, I was able to win my age group but failed to make the top ten. Consolation prize-made the dirty dozen. The post race was excellent.

Afterwards, there was a bonus: the holiday pajama party (the bernards).

Sunday agenda-race!

With half the amount, the choice was simpler:

a. parkland 5 mile holiday run
b. trail run (half/10/5 k)
c. jcc 5k

Did enough distance, so a. is out. I want to race traditionally also, ruling out b. This one is a candidate for the Clint Eastwood sytle synopsis:;

The good-won age group, top ten win
The bad- barely broke 20 (however, best of weekend)
The ugly- got beat by 2 runners I couldve, shouldve wouldve. injury 1st mile cost me the master title.

D C M bray

D C M bray! That's how you pronounce December in Spanish.

Saturday agenda-race!

Since I not only didn't qualify for the 2011 USATF national Jr Olympic cross country championships, I couldn't afford to go since its in SC. I only found 1 race, so its a wonderful run 5k wins!

This race was far enough, being in Boca. I was surprised by a cameo appearance from Linda, who signed up literally at last moment on race day & finished (as I expected). Meanwhile, this was my first race since my nightmare of a weekend last week. This was a rare time that I accepted not breaking 20 & actually be happy; got the monkey off my back. Despite the poor time, it was better than last week's 5k and good enough for a top ten finish. However, I had to settle for age group because of that. George won his age group as well. Speaking of George, Linda came up with the idea for us to honor his birthday (couple of days back) after the race; great job. That's a quality I like.

We got glass for our efforts. The post race could be considered a 5 star due to hot breakfast but was small. I remember the venue but not the name of this event from the past.

Sunday agenda-race!

Found a few distance races:

1. Florida holiday halfathon
2. run for tomorrow half & 5k
3. rnr latin music half

To make a long story short, I stayed close to home. Speaking of surprises, my dad showed up to race with me. Rule out #1, we usually do #2 but couldn't turn down, not only an inaugural race, but one close to home; #3.

I used this event as a training & recovery run, which means the dismal performance displayed was acceptable as long as I finish & claim the medal for this accomplishment. Of course, I had a self imposed 2 hour time limit. I barely met that minimum standard but was please to bounce back from last week's failed showing. Afterwards, I enjoyed the live concert featuring pit bull.

Diasaster!

Disaster! that describes the weekend to the tee.

Saturday agenda-race!

These are the events considered:

1. reggae marathon
2. Savannah river bridge run
3. spartan sprint
4. jingle bell jog 5k
5. steps for healing 5k
6. trikw

Keeping with the current trend, the furthest were automatically eliminated; 1 & 2. Without a swimmer, strike #7. With a relay looming, I can't chance an adventure race as a tune up. Last year, I got cremated at #4, despite the best time of the year! Therefore, I gave #5 a chance.

Praise the Lord! I made the right decision. Despite a dismal time, I made the top ten and won the master title! I struggled tremendously with the high winds. Plus, it wasn't exactly cool.

Sunday agenda-race!

more events to choose from:

a. rnr las Vegas
b. brandon half/5k
c. muddy buddy championship
d. palm beach marathon
e. inlet challenge bike ride
f. trail run (half/10k/5k)
g. 25.75 tri

Still keeping with the current trend, the furthest were automatically eliminated; a,b,c. no swimmer, no tri; last 1 out. race over rides & fun runs takes out e. i chose a tradition distance over the trail one.

I put together a good team & called it OMG, anticipating a win even though i had to use 2 other guys.

leg 1- Mike Kelly, runner of the 2011 BCS triathlon team i set up
leg 3-Sandy, rookie to relays, qualified by beating me for a win in a race; said endurance racing was specialty
anchor-veteran teammate Gene

Although injured, Mike had us in the lead. I kept us there until past mile 9, after that I don't know what happened. I surcame to a medical mishap (OMG!) & failed to deliver for team (make relay point) for the first time in history. OMG turned out to be a negative surprise.

All were good sports & the remaining 2 continued without my presence after getting the chip from me at the tent. We actually still made the podium because of their efforts. I apologize for letting the team down. Lord, I pray this never happens again.

Thanksgiving weekend

Thanksgiving weekend is upon us! 4 days away from the daily grind; yay!

Today's agenda-turkey trot.

Most races on this day are called turkey trots. However, there are some who stray away from the norm. Too many to list so I shall name those I have done before or considered before my report of the day.

1. get up, gather & groove 5k (Melbourne)
2. run for the pies 4 miler
3.jcc turkey trot 5k
4. tamarac turkey trot 5k
5. ft lauderdale turkey trot 5k
6. run Miami turkey trot 10k/5k

I was lazy this year so I passed on all races outside my county, despite #5 being an inaugural. #6=been there, done that, as the one I did, but my chances were better.

Think I'll give the Clint Eastwood style synopsis:

The good: I won the master title & top 10.
The bad: 8 am race delayed 15 minutes (hot & humid), only got a medal
The ugly: forfeited 4 positions due to lack of signage, also resulting in a horrific time.

Friday's agenda-black Friday

The calm between the storm, race speaking. Many began on thanksgiving but called it black Friday; hmmmm. I did get caught up in the madness. Hey, it's tradition!

Saturday's agenda-race!

I had 2 choices(ruling out th USATF jr Olympic regional championship): dreams & visions 5k @ markham or voice of love 5k in Miami lakes; I chose the latter-proximity. I don't usually pass on inaugurals but I was worn out from the past 2 days and elected not to drive so much. Besides, the next day, a tried & true race will be at the same site.

This victory was due to the running Gods (I say it in plural but there is only 1). I worked my way to 4th halfway through the race. By mile 2, some young jock burned out, advancing me to 3. In the final mile, the 2nd overall guy hunched over 3 times in pain; the 3rd was the charm. I took his slot til the end. Due to a short course, my time, although done in the past glory days, was way better than I've been running lately. Keep in mind, you cant run faster on grass with rolling hills than a hard, flat surface. Thank you Lord as this was my 4th 2nd overall finish within this month, a new PB.

Sunday's agenda-race!

More choices:

1. space coast half/full marathon
2. Sarasota half
3. posnac sprint to the finish 5k

I passed on the endurance events & decided to remain closer to home. By the grace of God, I finished with a decent time (this year's standard) & made the top ten (5th). Even though I was the 2nd fastest master, I was relegated to top in age class since not offered. This event closes out the month for racing. To make up mileage, I did a 2 mile tack on run with George.

Monday's agenda-eShop?

Yep. Cyber Monday! The high tech version of black Friday. I passed on that.

Sunday, November 27, 2011

No V M bray!

No V M bray! That's how November is pronounced in Spanish.

Saturday agenda-race!

I had a plethora to choose from:

1. ragnar relay (start in clearwater)
2. beach running world championships 10k & half
3. delray beach turkey trot
4. miles for mikayla
5. run for hunger 5k
6. take stock in children 5k
7. miracle run/walk 5k
8. tyler goldberg 5k

Eliminate the 1st 2. #3=been there, done that and liked it but I had to pass on that one and #4 (new) for a triple header opportunity. Thanks to God, I had the chance and even still, had to make a decision. Believe it or not, there were 3 in my county near me!

Race 1: run for hunger 5k

This was the 2nd closest to home, held at tropical park. 7 am start was nice, the rain was not. Yes, it rained on my parade, so to speak. It was a disappointingly low turnout for the host but just looking at my agenda above, you can see why. For the second time this month, I was second best but this time, I got blown away. I had to leave without award. I found out after the fact, I was dubbed the master champion (only top overall given, plus 10 yr age groups).

Race 2: miracle run/walk 5k

Aptly titled because it would've taken a miracle to beat Jon Williams. Oh wait, I jumped the gun. I was third for much of the race until some young kid challenged Jon. He quickly tore away from me (he paced me early) & him to the take and keep the lead. After nearly 2 miles, he burned out in pursuit, thus relinquishing his position to me; thank you very much. I was officially dubbed 2nd best once again (3rd ones the charm?). I waited a long time to get my award & Jon's, only to be disappointed that it was a paper certificate (no frame); oh, well.

Race 3: tyler goldberg 5k

I return once again to support the cause. Could you imagine if I got 2nd overall for the 3rd time this year? Well, if Chris didn't show up, along with 4 others, this would've come to fruition. By the grace of God, after a hard fought battle in the last mile, I captured the master title. The competitor lead most of the race. I was blessed because I was fatigued from the previous 2 races while he was fresh; thank you Lord.

Sunday agenda-race!

Not as many but still a selection:

a. ragnar relay (finish in daytona beach)
b. woman's half
c. purple stride 5k
d. muddy buddy

a. out by default; began yesterday. It should be obvious why I skipped b. I would've like to do c. but I set out to d. this year.

On high from yesterday, I was hyped to team up with a legend, Lisa Dorfman. It's rare to get her on relays with me due to her schedule and job, food fitness international, especially. I bought another mountain bike (1st was stolen) a couple of weeks ago to train but we used her lightweight titanium one instead. I started on the bike, she followed on the run. We leapfrogged disciplines while tackling obstacles until the mudpit. There, we wade through it then cross together through the finish line. Seemed easy but we got injured on the hidden hard asphalt beneath (assumed dirt or grass like surrounding). Dodging the slow people also killed time (our wave was next to last). Although we shouldve won, we took third in our category (1st 2 teams skipped obstacles). Since the awards look the same, we made no fuss. It was a lot of fun and I'd be interested in repeating this. However, we already discussed new strategy.

Wonderful weekend closed with 4 events, a triple header day plus a new event. God is good.

Veteran's weekend

Veteran's weekend actually began yesterday (Thursday) for me. I like to take the time to give propers to our troops for all they do to protect our freedom. Even if we shouldn't be fighting over there, they are doing their job to the best of their ability & should be respected for that. Most just enjoy the day off but this may not be possible if it were not for those soldiers who put their life on the line to make it happen. Many have paid the ultimate price. Remember, freedom is not free! Thanx, guys (& gals)!

Thursday agenda-waterford 5k

I did the first 2 of this event but it was what transpired in the last one I did that discourages me. The inaugural was the greatest one, unique trophies for all. The 2nd one reduced to generic medals, eliminated the walk division plus on top of that, I was listed as winner in my age group all the way through the awards ceremony but was announced 2nd; that was the last straw! Besides, its costly and I can't get off early from work so getting there is difficult. I like the staging though, with a nice post race setup. Congrats to my friends who competed. I did a mile & a quarter tempo run so as not to injure myself for the upcoming Veteran's weekend.

Friday agenda-midpoint madness 5k

Once in a lifetime day-11/11/11! I decided to return to this venue since I don't get & there were no races on Friday. I give my props to the troops this day. many paid the ultimate price that enabled me (& others) to be able to run. I don't really like night races but it beats the alternative.

Praise the Lord I was able to place after a grave error committed by yours truly. I had to go to the bathroom near the last minute and didn't move with the quickness to get to the front of the line. The horn went off while I was in mid pack. I jumped the wall, practically sprinted for a quarter mile on other side of the road, then jumped back over to continue. I actually ran a low 19 but that wont reflect in the results due to my mistakes. I was blessed to leave with a trophy.

Saturday agenda-race!

A plethora of events to choose from:

1. get up gather & groove 5k (Melbourne)
2. sandoway 5k
3. lungvity 5k
4. red kettle 5k
5. super hero scramble (adventure)
6. 2011 laroootaa! (cycling)
7. lighthouse 5k/10k
8. USATF youth cross country
9. key largo half/5k

i passed on #1 due to distance. Overlooked any non running events (5,6). Not young enough for #8. I like #9 except for the 10 yr age groups & paper certificates in the 5k; skipped. Don't like #7 despite closest proximity due to horrific changes from when I first did it (eliminated chance to do both 5k & 10k plus no true award ceremony (impersonal line up, take & leave)). Since I attempted to do a double header, #4 wasn't possible.

First event-sandoway 5k

It was an extremely windy day for this inaugural 5k. With nothing to block the wind (on A1A), it was a challenge. Despite barely breaking 20, only the race winner was in front of me through the finish line. I couldn't partake in the festivities because I had to rush to get to the next event. I was lucky I got a finishers medal since I couldn't wait for my award; now I have to go through hell & high water to get it.

Second event-lungvity 5k

I actually found out about this one through Linda & was amazed she didn't show despite being within running distance of this event. Sadly, I encountered unexpected delays and arrived just in time to see them start; double header failed. I did partake in the post race here. I obviously left without hardware from this one.

Sunday agenda-race!

With a short list, choice was easier:

a. rnr TX
b. greater gator du
c. 13.1 ft lauderdale
d. Miami man tri/du

Pass on events outside of FL; a. I like d. & b. but decided to return to my roots and do my long overdue long run. With the wind continuing to be strong, plus the bridge, I estimated the best I'd do would be 1:45. By the grace of God, I beat that by around 4 minutes. I was happy my dad did it as well, finishing his first of the season.

Afterwards, I visited d. and congratulated my teammates of escape on their 2nd place co-ed half iron win. It felt strange not cycling for the team.

Daylight savings weekend!

Daylight savings weekend is upon us! It autumn so we fall back and gain an hour; thank you, Lord.

Saturday agenda-race!

These are the races on my schedule today:

1. rnr Savannah marathon & half
2. club med 5k/10k
3. royal Caribbean 5k cruise
4. cca 5k
5. fragile X 5k

Rule out any events outside of FL; 1 & 3. #2 was the furthest within the state; strike 2. I like #4 but decided on proximity so there you are.

Although this was the first time I heard about it, it was advertised as the 4th annual walk/run. Apart from the wind, external conditions were good (cool) but sadly, internally, I was not. I turned out to be fragile, resulting in an X in the overall win category; I had to settle for 2nd best by 20 odd # of seconds. Granted, the course was twisty & turny, but this race was winnable by me but I let it get by like the Dolphins did in so many games they couldve, shouldve, would've won but didn't. Fortunately, I didn't lose out on prize money as there were none plus the plaques top 3 & master) were of the same size; age groupers got medals. Considering the time, I was blessed to get that honor. Post race was nice, especially for kids. Well, you know I'm a big kid so I did the climb.

Sunday agenda-race!

A lot more to choose from but can only do one:

a. NYC marathon
b. muddy buddy LA
c. paint the towne 5k (daytona)
d. sun capital half/5k
e. saluting veterans 5k
f. dolphins cycling challenge

Once again, rule out any events outside of FL; a & b. Next, the furthest, c. Strike out non-running events-f. I planned on e. but Tom, of Boca run club, was able to convince me to return to d., ignoring proximity (2nd furthest on my list of FL events).

With a bad taste in my mouth from the previous race, I came with the intent to redeem myself. Despite warmer weather & rolling hill course (yesterday was totally flat), this came to fruition. By the grace of God, for the first time ever there, I got the master title! Even though I (and all but the overall winner) got smoked by a woman, I shaved off nearly a minute & made the top ten  (5th) overall; another plaque to my collection. Back was the 5 star post race section, with fresh pancakes. I decided to do a tack on workout with George, since he kept talking about doing longer runs, by repeating the 5k at a slower tempo pace. I gotta keep doing that more often if I don't fit in enough halves or long runs.

Saturday, November 05, 2011

Halloween weekend

Halloween weekend is upon us! There were some tricks & some treats this weekend.

Saturday agenda-race!

The following events were on my radar:

1. Spooktacular 5k
2. safewalk 5k
3. miami beach Halloween half

Well, this was a tough selection because I been there, done those already. I really needed to do #3 but had a tough time there before. So I decided to go to the race where I have the best chance to place, ruling out #2.

I didn't do well (time wise), struggling as usual (trick) but did break 20 and by the grace of God, captured the last master slot (treat). Unusual, but 2 women got by me, bumping my overall position (trick), but I did take the last slot in the baker's dozen (treat).

Sunday agenda-race!

Many more events available this day:

a. rnr LA half
b. atlanta marathon
c. FL Halloween halfathon & 5k
d. race for the booty du/tri
e. FAU 5k
f. Halloween trail run (half/10/5k)
g. ironman 70.3 Miami

Due to finances, eliminate any race outside of FL (a,b). g struck for same reason plus no swimmer. I planned on d. but due to the inclement weather (a storm in the gulf), I decided against it (trick). besides, it was a long drive, like c., also skipped. I didn't want to risk injury, so I passed on f., eliminating all morning races (trick). I decided to train lightly (treat) on my inlines; only 2 miles.

Although I don't really care for night races, it beats the alternative. Even though still a far cry from where I need to be, the time was better than I have been doing lately, The weather felt nice (not so hot & humid) but was overcast & drizzling. Despite that, I had to settle for 2nd in age group (trick). I failed to even make the baker's dozen in this one but at least I made the podium (treat).

OctoberFest!

OctoberFest! Lots of races, just on my schedule alone!

Saturday agenda-race!

Check out the itinerary:

1. 13.1 dallas
2. iron mudder (day 1)
3. halpatiokee hero walk
4. VBLA 2 miler
5. bull dog 5kdash
6. without limits racing (4 miler adventure)
7. ability explosion 5k
8. 1st priority fundrun

Due to finances, I automatically eliminated 1 & 2. #3 was a fun run; strike 2. #6 was an adventure race; strike 3. I passed on #5 & #8 to return to a race I won last year, #7.

Unfortunately, I am not running as well as last year plus better competition showed up once they learned of my victory. I was fortunate enough to take the last master slot with a time barely breaking 20. Believe it or not, I made the top ten. Loved the fact that trophies were given to all. My dad made his debut for this running season & took 3rd in the age group; not bad after a long layoff. I am so happy we are the BEST (Bell's Elite Sports Team )!

Thanks to Jon, I was able to pull off a double header as we did #4. It felt like a 5k but was actually 2 miles in soft sand. Going north, I had to fight strong winds. I dressed in costume (they were in the holiday spirit & had a category for those who dressed up to run). and won that division as well as being 3rd overall. They only offered top 3 overall & top 3 overall costumed finishers. By the grace of God, I placed in both, double dipping so to speak. Anything less meant no hardware; what a risk I took.

Sunday agenda-race!

Even more to choose from:

a. rnr st Louis marathon
b.  myrtle beach mini marathon
c. iron mudder (day 2)
d. Apalachicola marathon
e. wellington 10 miler/5k
f. rocktoberfest 10 miler
g. sarcoma 5k
h. schott 5k
i. walk to prevent suicide
j. gables bike day
k. homestead speedway

Due to finances, I automatically eliminated the first 4.  Strike 2 for the last 3 (no awards). In need of doing a long event, I passed on g & h, even though I liked the former. So, I did a 10 miler. Oh, yeah, there are 2 of them; the inaugural won!

Even though I had to travel, it was worth it. With more categories (5 deep in age), with good effort, I had a great opportunity to walk out with hardware, a difficult task for me with any race more than a 5k. Thankfully, this came to fruition. Praise the Lord, the weather was cool, allowing me to run well, make the top 20 and win a master title. However, no matter what happened, I was gonna have a PR as I never ran a ten miler before. This was put on by my favorite new timing company, Elite sports. I was there for their inaugural event last year.

Mid month crisis (Oct)

Mid month crisis (Oct) is evident as to what has occurred thus far.

Saturday agenda-race!

Other than the midwest spartan sprint in Il, I only found 2 'local' events, in different counties, but was able to do a double header, thanx to JW. I passed on an event that I agree with the cause (breast cancer), called race for the cure, in my town, because you cant win an award & I like to compete.

Event 1: AVDA 5k

Last year, I performed magnificently, beating out a faster nemesis & taking 3rd overall. This year, sadly, I barely broke 20 and let all the master titles (plaques) slip by me, forcing me to settle for an age group medal. Lord, please don't let me suffer like the Miami dolphins! The only bright side is a top ten finish sufficient for a podium spot. They had a great post race set up.

Event 2: women in distress 5k

A 'podunk' event that had a low turnout. This event had great intentions, as it raised money for abused women and was a family oriented program, featuring many local, christian artists & dancers performing. The offered a 5k run (15 laps on grass) and 5k walk (5 laps around park); I chose the latter, since I don't get many racewalk events now. No real awards but Jon won the run, I the walk. I got to speak & praised them on their efforts. It was fun.

Sunday agenda-race!

Seems like everybody picked this day to put on an event; I could only do one:

1. Detroit marathon
2. muddy buddy Dallas
3. ft lauderdale 15/30k training run
4. rb off road du/tri
5. parkland 5k
6. hope for vision 5k
7. xtreme race for the cure

Due to finances, you can scratch the 1st 2. #3 is a long fun run; strike 2. #4 strikes interest but unfortunately, some  idiot stole my mountain bike; strike that. I passed on 5 (big mistake, as I would've been in top 3) & 7.

I selected #6 because it was yet another inaugural 5k. Other than that, it was a bad choice. Synopsis, Clint Eastwood style:

The good: top ten (6), podium finish (1 ag & was top master)
The bad: My time was worse than the last race.
The ugly: no master title was offered.

So, with no master titles to bring home, and failure to break 19, the mid month crisis continues.

Awk 2 bray

Awk 2 bray, thats how October in Spanish sounds.

Saturday agenda-race?

Not much happening. The following was on my schedule:

1. Seminole hard rock 5k
2. coach to first class invitational
3. march for cancer 5k

I found out the first was a private affair; strike 1. #2 was cross country & at vista view; strike 2. The latter was cancelled; strike 3, I'm out to train!

I decided to do a 10k inline skate followed by a 5k tempo training run. I got wet on the latter. Rain & wind all day. Hopefully, this subsides tomorrow.

Sunday agenda-race

A whole lot more events:

a. Chicago marathon
b. rnr denver marathon/half
c. muddy buddy San Jose
d. shark shuffle 5k
e. multirace championship Olympic tri

Due to finances, eliminate all events outside of Florida. Due to the later, once again I miss out on 1 of my favorite 5k's. I couldn't pass on the opportunity to be crowned the best tri team in Florida.

For 1 last time, Mike K & Pam S join me. It is their first series competition & my first with them (did only individual sprints prior). We had to qualify to get into this championship race so I didn't want let this chance go by. The toughest challenge for me was not the race itself but rather to convince them to travel from west palm beach to do nearly twice our normal distance. I been there, done that, but remember, a first for them.

The good: the bike (no rick) & run (not to the peninsula end) courses shortened due to inclement weather
The bad: the swim was normal distance.
The ugly: extremely windy & wet

We competed against a formidable team, who in fact, had a lead of over 3 minutes after the swim. My friend Estela acquired a 'pro' swimmer! When my turn came, I had to rely on my training & whatever strength God gave me to dig into that. The external conditions were against me but God is good. I pushed so hard, I got a PR average time. Believe or not, I was not able to pass her but caught her in transition! After that, Mike took over, passed her and we ultimately won! To quote Queen, 'we are the champions'!
Monday agenda-race?

Happy Columbus day! The state doesn't recognize this holiday, but fortunately, I took it off. I couldn't find any race but good ol' JW did; off we go!

Time for the Clint Eastwood synopsis:

The good: I got on the podium (2nd age); inaugural 5k
The bad: generic medal, forgot my running gear.
The ugly: my time (course long), wack categories (no overall, master, ten year ag, 2 deep), no trophy (oa ag only, naturally Jon got that)

Under normal circumstances, I would've won my age group, at the very least, but if top 3 & master, I would've gotten the master title since I was 4th overall; oh, well. That's the way the cookie crumbles at the green dragon 5k.

Have a heart weekend

Have a heart weekend. That's what I call it, especially based on today.

Saturday agenda-race!

God made it possible to do a triple header but opted for double. Question was, what race to do first.

1. race for the cure (st petersburg)
2. Disney win &; dine half
3. American heart walk/run 5k
4. livestrong 5k/half
5. fight for air 5k

I decided to remain on the east coast, wiping out #1. Got shut out of #2 plus been there, done that. Due to fees, team commitment and chance for double header, #4 was eliminated.

Race #1: American heart walk/run 5k

On this one, i'll cut to the chase. I didn't get hardware because of the wack age categories (41-45), and only 1 per age group; they didnt have a heart this weekend. I wouldve been 2 in my age group with an award under normal circumstances. Average post race. Anyway, I had to take off to get to next event.

Race #2: fight for air 5k

Although I have run at Huizenga park before, the course was different. I already hated the normal but this one was worse in the since of the many curves & a sharp 180 that twisted my foot. Luckily, I recovered enough to finish decent, even though I lost more time with poorly marked finish. The post race qualified as five star with all the hot pizza the was available in addition to the norm. Sadly, I left without hardware again ( they didn't have a heart this weekend). Even though an award like ceremony was held, none was given. Was told they will be mailed; wish me luck as I still don't have my shirt from that ups 5k ( they didn't have a heart at all).

Even though I got no award to bring home, I got a hold of one prize, Linda. In fact, she won a prize without even doing a race! How? She won in the taco bell challenge; way 2 go!

Sunday agenda-race!

Many more to choose from but no double dipping:

a. rnr San Jose half
b. divas half (NY)
c. 13.1 Atlanta
d. dunns run 5k/mile
e. race the troops du/tri
f.  national livestrong  day (cycling)

Scratch any events outside of FL (a,b,c). I race over rides, eliminating f. I was scheduled to do d., especially since my likeness appeared on the brochure but event e was moved to the same day and I opted for that instead.

I chose a new partner, Julie. Many asked why I chose to do a relay when I am capable of du'ing all by myself. Well, I race solo all the time. God has given me so much over the years and this is my way of giving back to the athletic community. She is trying to make a come back & she said this helps to inspire her on that. She was very nervous & feared she would hurt the team. I saw the fire & desire in the eyes and that is what I need on a team. You don't have to be the best, just do your best.

Also, I gave back by showing my support toward the troops. I dressed in a manner reflecting the armed forces. To my surprise, Julie did as well. She did her bit, coming in right after George, then it was my time to shine. Despite not using my aero helmet, I posted a 21 average on the bike. My transition was much longer than usual because I had to take off the gloves to tie my shoes (fun part since I was in the spirit of the event). Although my time was nothing to write home about, by the grace of God, it was the 3rd fastest of all duathletes! We finished in the top ten and won the relay division. We were aptly named 'Supa man & wunda woman'!

Autumn is upon us!

Autumn is upon us! It began yesterday but here in Florida, you couldn't tell.

Saturday agenda-race!

I had quite a selection, so the decision was difficult:

1. NY super spartan
2. 5k run for hunger
3. new life impact 5k
4. sickle cell sprint 5k
5. Miami children's hospital 5k
6. alpha omega invitational (xc)

Remaining in state eliminates #1. Strike the last=cross country. Sadly, I could only pick 1 event. Therefore, I decided to select an inaugural event. That got rid of my favorite #4 and cost me a trophy; bad move in hindsight. Now, there were 3 races I haven't done. I passed on the closest race (#5) because my calls & emails were ignored, setting a bad precedence. Since #2 gave me chance for a double workout, #3 was cut; also, a bad move in hindsight since I couldve been top 3 over there.

My time was less than stellar but sufficient for an age group win. If there was a master title, it would've gotten away anyway. What I did like is that I was guaranteed hardware (finisher medal was given) but by the grace of God, I placed in the top 5.

Bonus event-5k walk for hunger

This was my chance to have fun, as there was no pressure, therefore, no need for speed. However, what really made it special was the cameo appearance of Linda. In fact, she agreed to walk with me & she is doing well on her come back. I am certain that if she sticks with me, she will be back in form like the good ol' days when we were 'the couple'. No awards, unless I include her, but a good time. The course was scenic & different from the run. Love the post race refreshments.

Sunday agenda-race!

No brainer. Either trail run or escape to Miami; the latter! I return with my favorite teammates, Inga & Gene. We are actually returning co-ed relay champs but most will never know since I changed the name of the team. I formed a triathlon team of 3 runners, so I appropriately named the relay, '3 runners tri-ing to win. By the grace of God, we did just such, despite more competition. On a rare occasion, I was the fastest cyclist of all teams & top ten overall. Our team was 5th overall, including all male teams. In hindsight, if I had known it was gold or bust, I would've never formed the team; praise the Lord, we won.

Sep tee m bray!

Sep tee m bray! That's how September is pronounced in Spanish. This is also mid month crisis time.

Saturday agenda-UPS 5k

I couldn't find any other event, other than a seemly private one (5k sprint/stroll for recovery) so I ended up paying more to get less. What do I mean? Well, lets just say that ups didn't deliver when it came to my tech shirt. Excuse (possibly valid) was that they ran out of shirts and no savings was given to race day sign ups (still charged more).

Race was basically the tour of gables with a different name.  It was for the united way. I got surprised by JoAnn (channel 10) with an interview at the starting line. Then off to the races. I had a decent first mile then it went downhill from there. I surcame to the heat & humidity. I love the fact that finishers medal were given. Of course, I want the podium prize. Despite a less than stellar time, I won my age group by the grace of God & made the dirty dozen. The medal was nice, not 1 I ever had and featured a small spinning part. Post race was good also. The raffle seemed rigged but nevertheless, it was held.

Sunday agenda-race!

The following events were known by me:

1. muddy buddy (NY)
2. rnr PA half
3. trilogy bonus round

This was a no-brainer. We, Spencer and I, are the defending trilogy duathlon relay champions. This race is required to complete the series and he is back!

Bad news for me as it was windy, plus, still hot and humid. As for him, we was tired after doing a long run previously. The bonus round is typically the most attended as it is the last one. There were so many more relays this day. Despite so many challenges for us to overcome, we prevailed. In fact, we had the fastest combined time (overall)! Praise the Lord!

We made great strides, finally reaching the top. Race 1, 3rd overall. Race 2, 2nd overall. Race 3, I got a substitute as Spence was out of town. The replacement performed well, repeating the Race 2, 2nd overall finish. This was just to compete as 1 gets thrown out. In our finale, we take overall. We improved a slot at every showing! Thank you, Tim, for stepping aside as a teammate a giving us this opportunity. He & we win our respective overall titles for 2011!

9/11 anniversery weekend

9/11 anniversery weekend is upon us. Can you believe its been a decade since this national disaster occured? My condolences to all the victims & praises to all the heroes, like the firefighters, to did their best to assist in this untimely matter. 9/11 was a day of diasaster, but we can't let them (terrorists) ruin our lives.

Saturday agenda-race!

There were a plethora of events on this day:

1. PA spartan sprint
2. camp boggy creek challenge ride (Eustis, FL)
3. jeff annas firefighter 5k (WPB)
4. tunnel to toweres 5k
5. sickle cell anemia walk/run 5k
6. tarzans cup championship
7. alpha omega invitational (xc)
8. 5k freedom run

Eliminate #1 immediately (out of state). #2 is not a race; off the list. Knock off non 5ks (6 & 7). #5=been there, done that. #3=furthest 'local' race;#8=closest 5k. Both 4 and 8 were inaugurals; I chose the former because it was advertised at a low rate first.

Oh what a mistake. I was the largest of all the events! On top of that, I hate the course (bridge x2). I had to deal with that plus the heat and humidity. Additionally, I had not fully recovered from illness, which already hampered my training. The chip timing was so slow that no results were posted, even after an hour from the race winner, not even online! I felt so bad, I had to leave without even knowing if I placed. I found out later I did but have no award to show for it. One plus is that I finished high enough to get a commemorative finishers medal. Thank you Jesus.

Sunday agenda-race!

Not many choices (they wont let me do a 5-15 kid tri) but yet I pulled a double header!

Event 1=race-firefighters 5k
Event 2=fun run-firefighter 5k miami

I didnt get any hardware from either of those events! However, the race needs explanation.

Event 1-firefighters 5k

As a member of runner's depot racing team, this was a 'mandatory' appearance; It is put on by the company. Now for the synopis, Clint Eastwood style:

The good: We (RD) had a great turnout, I got finishers medal
The bad: Although I have soul, I lost my sole (right shoe), costing me time & position, only 1 master title
The ugly: I didnt place, therefore no trophy, still sick

Event 2-firefighter 5k fun run

Now I had 2 reasons to leave the first event-no award & more exercise! This event was on the way home & hosted by a new running store (iRun) formed by runner friends. This event was designed to honor the fire fighters during 9/11. We kept a slow pace & many, including yours truly, held & passed the american flag like an olympic torch. I was dressed so patriotic, that I was interviewed by somebody asking why I did this event. I explained it was the last of 3. This weekend was a diasaster in the since that I missed an award that I won in event 1, wasnt fast enough to win a trophy in event 2 (wouldve in previous age cat) & couldnt get an award in a fun run. Although I continue to struggle, I thank God I can still do compete.

Running season is back!

Running season is back! This weekend marks the unofficial start of the Running season.

Saturday agenda-race!

I considered the following events:

1. Jon Z MDA 5k (n port)
2. john clay 5k (Naples)
3. fall fling 5k
4. king of the hill 5k

After much consideration, I passed on the first 2 then focused on the last 2. I chose #3 but found out it was cancelled, leaving me either #4 or bust. Sorry, its too difficult for me not to race, especially since I couldn't 1 weekend last month.

I pretty much got what I expected-a tough time battling the hills in the heat & humidity; the horrible H's. Now for the Clint Eastwood synopsis:

The good: got finishers dog tag & beat some guys that have been beating me lately with a sub 20, sub 6 mile.
The bad:  the horrible H's, desired race cancelled, didn't break 19, didn't make dirty dozen.
The ugly: didn't place despite efforts, paced slowed significantly after a great first mile.

This race was being run probably as family oriented, all day event. I had to leave, especially since I had no hardware and the proposed BBQ is designed for meat eaters. I didn't feel well enough to compete in any of the other events they were holding. For those fortunate enough to place, big medals were given. I admit they were good but disappointed that masters didn't go 3 deep, stripping me of hardware!

This day would have been a total disaster if it hadn't been for Linda. She surprised me by making it down and we had a nice lunch & what not. Wish we would've been together longer but beats the alternative.

Sunday agenda-race!

These are races on my radar:

a. Disneyland half
b. rnr half (VA)
c. labor day tri/du

Scratch the first 2 due to distance & cost and go with the final one. Besides, we are in prime position to win the broward county series. Pam was supposed to swim but ended up doing a 100 dash due to the cancellation of the swim (lake contaminated). After that, biz as usual. By the grace of God, I got a PR on the bike before handing off to Mike K. Although much slower than usual, he did the best he could considering he got injured, which lead to mild depression, which lead to overeating, which lead to gaining weight (negative chain reaction)  plus lack of training (conditions). We were the top team & top ten overall; WTG & praise the Lord!

Monday agenda-labor day!

Have a happy one! This is my chance to train. Unfortunately, I was sick so I had to scrap my original plan of a 12 mile skate and did an easy 2 mile recovery jog. Then, suffer the day accomplishing nothing; I hate that!

Close call

Close call it was when hurricane Irene was approaching Florida. Not only couldve caused a lot of damage but my champ race & inaugural tri were in jeopardy.

Saturday agenda-race!

There was a selection but only 1 wise choice:

1. MA spartan sprint (day 1)
2. siesta key du/tri
3. n collier regional rampage 5k
4. cell-ebration 5k

Rule out 1 due to extreme distance. #2 is also far & is part of the FFW series in which I have not done any races to qualify for the series, so strike 2. #4 is closest in proximity but a series race will automatically overrule, so there you go.

This was championship day. I need to complete 1 series today (elite) then pick up for another (summer sizzler) already completed. I entered the series this year as defending champion but it was in jeopardy by teammate Jon. By the grace of God, he opted out, giving me a chance. Remember, its just that; a chance. I still have to do my job to seal the deal. Praise the Lord, I felt good (internal conditions favorable). Although still well short of where I need to be, it was my best time in the series. I got the master title & was 4th overall; a blessing in disguise. I almost got 3rd overall but that would not be in my best interest in this case. Thanks to God, I am now the only 2 time champion of the elite series!

Sunday agenda-race!

There still was quite a selection but only 1 wise choice:

a. MA spartan sprint (day 2)
b. muddy buddy (MN)
c. oleta trail run 5/10/half
d. Miami speed triathlon

You can rule out a & b, since both are out of state. c=been there, done that; d. wins!

The Miami speed triathlon was an inaugural event held at the homestead speedway & featured both sprint & Olympic distances. I got my fastest male swimmer James & trusty runner Gene as partners. The sprint had a swimmer longer than my original choice for a swimmer (Inga) desired, 750 m. The day started off as a disaster as all athletes were held up at the entrance for more than a half hour. He performed as expected, giving us a great start. After passing several bikes, I was all alone. The course was not well marked so I lost a lot of time, sometimes nearly stopped to get help. I passed the torch to Gene to seal the deal for the team. Collectively, we were the top relay team and 5th overall! Praise the Lord!

To train or race?

To train or race? That is the question.

Saturday agenda-race?

I found a few events:

a. muddy buddy (Vancouver, bc)
b. ft desoto du/tri
c. striders 4+ mile fun run
d. Tarzan's cup 5k/10k

Definitely not a.; not even in the USA!. a race will automatically override a fun run; strike c. I thought about d. due to proximity but a well respected runner did 1 & didn't recommend it.  I like b. but with gas prices high, entry fee & the distance, I reluctantly passed. On top of that, I remember that last year, I got there at midnight; I was fortunate Shannon let me sleep a few hours on the vacant bed.

I did a long overdue distance run. It was a mystery distance but I always wondered what it would be like to run from my house, head west toward & through Larry & Penny (E & N outer), then take 137 ave to coral reef dr, head south on fairway heights dr to home! Using a Garmin I got from runner's depot, it measured nearly 11 miles. It was hot and humid, partly cloudy when I began but became fully cloudy 1/3 in. About 2/3 into the run, it rained, so I returned soaking wet but cooler. Took longer than I'd like but I survived.

Sunday agenda-race?

I found some more events:

a. rnr Chicago half marathon
b. run like a diva haf (CO)
c. 13.1 Minneapolis
d. ace of diamonds 5k

I have no plans to do anything out of state at this time, leaving only d. Clearwater is even farther than ft desoto, plus its only a 5k. I decline. Instead, I planned on meeting with some athlete friends to do the Miami man bike route. Unfortunately, they were AWOL so I had to cycle back home. I decided to skate 12 miles. To my dismay, I rapidly declined due to the heat, humidity and wind. I had to settle with being about 3 minute off pace; a halftime, I was less than a minute off. My shining moment was catching up to a cyclist first mile & briefly passing him in the second.

Therefore, you answer is-train!

Summer sizzler series time!

Summer sizzler series time! Well, it's a sizzling summer, often with record heat indexes & both events are series races.

Saturday agenda-race!

Had a few choices outside my 'local' area but only 1 within-ING kick off 5k. No way I'm gonna a fun run over race, plus today was the finale of the 3d run shoppe Summer sizzler series (officially titled). This time, Jon W wasn't here (won another 5k) so I had to travel far by myself. It began cooler but quickly heated up as the sun rose. Remarkably, I felt better and this reflected in my time. Although far short of where I need to be, it was the best of the series. By the grace of God, I was duly rewarded and got a trophy (master winner)for the 1st time ever in this series, instead of the generic in the previous 2. Many people were cheering on a local favorite to beat me & he did succeed by 5 seconds. Luckily, he was given the grand master title (correct way to award) & not strip me of my title. You see, when more than 1 title is given, you must limit the runner to within that group, just like age groups. So I was the fastest within the master group (40-49) since grandmaster is (50-59) & the senior grandmaster will now be 60 & up. This is usually more fair. However, if money was involved, that's a different story.

Sunday agenda-race!

On the quest to defend the du trilogy relay champ title. Bad news-Spencer was out of town with his wife. Good news-a got a suitable replacement, Allan Walton. Can you believe I (runner's depot) selected someone from a rival racing team? Friendship overrides all; next is talent! As a team captain, you must put aside little things like team affiliation, or even language (once had someone who barely spoke English) and seek the best person to accomplish your goal-victory! By the grace of God, we matched the overall position of the last event, 2nd overall and the overall relay team. I also got a PR on the bike in the process. This was Allan's first time on a relay, so I believe. Cant wait til the bonus round!

Thursday, August 11, 2011

Aw goss toe!

Aw goss toe! That's how Agosto is pronounced in Spanish. This is the opening weekend of August.

Saturday agenda-race!

1. Vermont spartan beast 10+ mile
2.moss park race series (began last night, ended today)
3. race for trace (ft Myers)
4. beat the heat 5k (st Lucie)

I actually did a 2 mile skate in lieu of a morning race. However, at the last minute, I found it difficult to go the entire weekend without racing, so- have car, will travel.

I passed on #1 (requires flying), #2, the 2nd furthest event & #3, far on the west side plus an early start. So, off I try to beat the heat.

Unfortunately, I failed to beat the heat! Why? I not only failed to break 19 but worse, was in mid 20's. I watched the master title run by me while I was suffering in the extreme heat & humidity. I was tired from the long solo drive to port st. Lucie. Oh yeah, it was an afternoon race. Enough with the excuses, I fell short. However, I was pleased that the race was so small, I made the top ten & the top of my age group, so at least I don't return home empty handed; I got a medal.

Sunday agenda-train

I couldn't find any races (except the providence half), so off I train. I normally mount the bike on cross train Monday, so I that & pulled out my skates. Afterwards, I satisfied the run element with 3 quarter mile mill runs. It was nearly a nightmare with no local races. Out of desperation, I did a race and didn't even get that right (time). Now, back to the drawing board.

Sunday, August 07, 2011

Close out!

Close out! It's the final weekend of July.

Saturday agenda-race!

I return to eagle lakes 5k to defend my position in the elite race series. Hot & humid as expected. Unexpected, more entrants & faster to boot. Despite these facts, although my position was worse than last time, my finishing time improved & title as well (master). I sit in a good position to win a new age category since I cant defend the old one; thanks father time.

Sunday agenda-race!

I return to Huntington's tri with my favorite teammates, Inga & Gene. I appropriately named the relay, '3 runners tri-ing to win!' Inga is the only 1 of us that can swim. Gene doesn't even own a bike, so it was a no brainer for this team captain. We gel like a championship team every time. She swam well, nearly breaking ten minutes at this venue. Us guy were #1 of all in our category on the land events. I expected that of him, but shocked for yours truly; praise the Lord. We were the top co-ed relay team this year & the 2nd fastest of all teams, regardless of category. Overall position was 20th; awesome teammates!

Run, sweat, and cheers!

Run, sweat, and cheers! Yep, I edited a title of a race that edited a common expression, 'blood, sweat and tears'.

Thursday agenda-Run, sweat, and beers!

Yep, that's the title of the inaugural race I ran on an unusual night. I went into this race like a blind date, not knowing what to expect. I thank the Lord I made the podium (barely) because:

1. night race (tired after work)
2. far (traveled 3 counties)
3. no overall or master titles
4. ten year age groups

The award was a generic medal but I'll take that over the alternative. Post race was a meat lover's dream but nightmare 4 me.

Saturday agenda-race!

1. club med 5k/10k
2. tarzan's cup 5k/10k adventure
3. dreher park dash 5k
4. hemingway 5k

I passed on the first due to distance, although 4 could qualify as well. I wanted to do a normal race, so strike 2. I planned on #3 until a friend suggested carpooling. Since I haven't been down south in a minute, I agreed. Unfortunately, I discovered the hard way, after an extremely long wait (past 10 pm) that it was scaled down. Now, only top master plus the award was wood, no medals. Plaque if a title holder. On top of that, I didn't get a tshirt. However, the post race was still on point, 5 star with the pizza.

Sunday agenda-train

I passed on the club med tri for lack of a swimmer & decided to train. I got in a 10k skate followed by nearly a 3 mile run. The brick workout was a bit challenging with the heat & humidity.

Sunday, July 17, 2011

Full moon weekend

Full moon weekend began yesterday, starting with an hour long meeting prior to work with the new office manager.

Saturday agenda-race!

With nothing local, have car, will travel; carpool ideal. To the west coast for the beat the heat 5k. Sadly, I couldn't beat the heat but by the grace of God, despite a worse time than the last visit, I got the same result, an age group win. This yielded another generic medal. Although disappointed with it, that beats the alternative. Post race was slightly above average. Time unknown because of a timing snafu but I do know it was slower than last time but sub 20. Lisa beat me by about a minute to win the woman's title. A new guy won the whole race; the previous race winner was 2nd this day.

Sunday agenda-race!

Tudo bem! I wish I had the money to run the Rio de janeiro marathon este dia mas nao; estou pobre. I saw Aldo at the packet pick up so he missed the marathon  in his home country. Besides, Spencer & I are on the quest to defend our title and improve our position. We did just that and had a stellar day. He smoked the first mile so fast that the eventual overall duathlon winner, Tim (runners depot teammate) had to pass me on the bike on the approach to the the Rick. Fortunately, it was low wind but still had its effects. I had a slight improvement over the last time (course record for me) but still didn't break 27. However, it was good enough for 7th fastest bike split, the best I recall doing! Even though I slipped some positions cycling, Spencer pass all but the overall leader and finished strong with a sub 19 (only the race winner was faster & by a mere 2 seconds). Our team won but had the 2nd fastest overall time! With me on the bike, likely, that's the best we will get. Praise the Lord!

Sunday, July 10, 2011

Drought!

Drought! It has been such until July came. All this week, its been raining cats & dogs! Seems like the water restrictions should be lifted by now.

Saturday agenda-race

Well, race if I decided to travel to 'kingdom come'. Nothing within my normal range, not even Naples! It was much farther and I don't like long trips right after work. I had not done a truly long run since spring, I think; today is the day! However, I picked a doozy of a day. Most rains began mid day to evening but not this day. I began with only the streets wet (no rain) but a few miles in, it began and not just a drizzle. On top of that, I didn't feel so good internally (even had to use the restroom) so I was much slower. I thank the Lord for allowing me to finish what I started but am very disappointed with the performance, even with poor external conditions. At least I got in the mileage (14) with the Rick as the turn around.

Sunday agenda-race

I found some events if I were willing to travel:

1. Utah super spartan previous day.
2. moss park du/tri/aqua in Orlando, sprint on Saturday, Olympic this day
3. muddy buddy  in Detroit

However, I passed on those and decided to train. Since I usually cycle on Mondays, I pulled out my inlines & skated 1.1 miles short of a half marathon. My watch quit so the time was unknown but the estimated time was much slower than normal, much like that long run.

Independence weekend

Independence weekend is upon us. I'd like to thank the soldiers that made it possible for us to be free to do what we do. hang in there.

Saturday agenda-roll

I found a race (4 miler) but didn't feel like traveling to ft Myers burning up gas for a distance not quite my forte. Instead, I pulled out my inline skates & rolled 1.1 miles short of a half marathon. I was not quite up to par fighting against wind today & was nearly 3 minutes off my best time but nevertheless, I got in my workout.

Sunday agenda-ride

I didn't see any races today so I knew this would be a day to train. I decided to join onto a group headed up by Tachi of Miami pace. We began at pinecrest gardens but I turned off at black point since I am racing the next day and they are not. Seemed like it took me longer on the return. Possibly the route I took (I couldn't remember theirs) was longer plus I had no one to draft off of. In any case, I got in an hour twenty worth of work out then call it a day.

Monday agenda-race!

Just about every county has a race this day, although noticeably missing is in Dade county. I'd normally do Weston but I had been selected to be on a relay. Besides, I remember the memorial day disaster & sadly, my running has not improved.

I joined the ever powerful team Ali bootcamp I, featuring the owner of Perfit himself, known for his power & speed on the bike, and his lovely wife Beth, known for her speed as a female runner. This came into play for our overwhelming victory. She was the starter & did her leg in a sub 6 minute pace (top 10), better than I've run as an average this year! Naturally, Ali advanced us some positions with an extraordinary performance on the bike, even though it was not his racing one and the ground was wet from rain. On top of that, tradewinds features the most technical course of all multirace's local events. My job was to maintain or improve our position. Although I'm not totally satisfied with my time, it was the 2nd best split of all du participants. As a team, we were the only one to be in the top ten (4th overall) and the first of the three (all formed by Ali) able to break an hour! What a way to begin the holiday. I was dressed accordingly & I like the medal shaped like the U.S.A.

Summer time!

Summer time! It's upon us. The longest day of the year (Tuesday) officially began the summer season. Mark my words, it already started down here in Miami! Sadly, this weekend also marks 2 years since Michael Jackson was murdered.

Friday agenda-doral business run

I decided to do this one because it was an inaugural. I had to get some time off of work to pull this off. I was expecting extreme heat & humidity (6:30 start) but instead got lots of rain. Let's sum it up Clint Eastwood style:
The good: I won my age group
The bad: time was among the worst
The ugly: no overall, master or any place other than first in age group

Saturday agenda-race!

Seems like everybody picked this day schedule events. Unfortunately, I could only pick one:

1. rnr Seattle marathon & half
2. spartan death race (VT)
3. sugden 5k
4. freedom 5k

I automatically passed on anything outside of FL. I like the last 2 but could do one. #3 wins because I return as defending champion. Unfortunately, I'm not in as great shape. By the grace of God, I was able to fight off another master in the final mile & take the top master title. Ironically, I was 4th overall, as in the past. I was honored with a picture framed of the starting line of the inaugural race ever for elite & of this series ( I picked that). Jon W was 2nd overall.

Sunday agenda-train

The only local race I could find was a trail one at Oleta. There was also a tri in clearwater but with no swimmer, that's off. I decided to train & pulled out my inlines. I rolled a 10k then followed with 2 sprints (run element). It was a change of pace.

Congrats to all who raced.

Father's day weekend

Father's day weekend is upon us. Celebrated commercially tomorrow but all good dad deserve recognition daily. Have a happy one!

Saturday's agenda-race!

Although there were choices, a 5k was elusive.

a. muddy buddy (NY)
b. mid Atlantic spartan sprint (adventure in VA)
c. summer sizzler 5k
d. Tarzan's cup 5k/10k (adventure)

Due to finances, I pass on anything outside of FL. I contemplated the last one but it's a little pricey. So with the offer to carpool, I chose the remaining.

It was hot & humid as expected. On top of that, the trip was long (west coast of FL) and I had to help drive. I woke up really early (1:30) to get ready for this also. With my current struggles and those factors, I was fortunate (blessed) to win my age group & be in the top ten. Not happy with my time but satisfied with the position & results. Since only 1 place was given for overall, masters, grandmasters & senior grandmasters, I had to settle for a generic medal instead of a trophy.

Sunday's agenda-race!

This was the first race of the trilogy series. Spencer & I come in as defending duathlon relay champions. They offered a sprint & international for triathlon but it didn't matter since I'm a du'er, not a tri'er! I was afraid of disastrous results since it rained & was extremely windy Saturday night. Well, God is good. The external conditions were good (low wind & dry) and this time, internal conditions were as well; I felt strong.

Spencer delivered as expected posting the fastest run splits of all duathletes. I tried hard not to hold back the team. This year, I focused solely on one discipline, the bike. Based on last year, I made a dramatic improvement of about 4 minutes! Believe it or not, the team we beat was a minute faster on the bike split despite my average being only 2 seconds off of 22! We won game 1 and are 2 away from a successful title defense. Plus, we had the 3rd fastest overall time of all duathletes; thank you Lord.

Drought

A Drought is evident as there has been a lack of rain for months. However, the Drought I'm speaking of is in regards to running. First of all, I haven't broken 19 and the year is almost half done! Second, this weekend, there were no races within my normal range other than track and field. Finally, the Miami heat after game 3 in Dallas. First time they lost 3 in a row but at an inopportune time-the finals.

Saturday agenda-train

I learned of a track and field event in miramar last night, which was insufficient time to participate. Therefore, I could only train. Since I cycle weekdays, I chose to roll again. This time, I cut it to a 10k so as not to fatigue prior to the next day. I followed it with 2 sprints to satisfy the run element.

Sunday agenda-race!

The buddy muddy (ATL) caught my eye but is quite distant. I remained 'home' & returned to the NW track & field classic. This year, I only did the 1500 meter racewalk and the 3000 meter run. Somebody jogged to catch me from behind to take the racewalk title from me; I settled for 2nd overall. However, I have no excuses for the 3K; I simply got beat so I settled for 2nd in age group. I didn't feel well after these events so I forfeited the 400 meter dash (would have had to wait nearly 4 hours). No MVP this year but I take my medals & run. This was my speed training for the week.

Hurricane season

Hurricane season began officially this past Wednesday, so this weekend is the first since that. Already disaster has struck but not due to a hurricane; the Heat lost for the first time in the playoffs at home! A game they should've won considering they were in the lead by 15 with 5+ minutes remaining.

Saturday agenda-race!

Based on the races I considered, the choice was simple:

1. new york spartan sprint (adventure)
2. 13.1 Chicago
3.7k for amputees in Haiti

I chose the latter & raced within my county. I came in as defending champion but knew I would lose this title to someone; question was, who? I thought Walthon would but some young guy did, costing me the sole master title, even though I was 3rd overall! Not happy with my time but happy I withstood attack from 2 other master legends, Keith and Fred, plus any other runner, whether I knew them or not. I love the race director but organization was not so good (admittedly) due to the number of activities planned. Except for overall, the medals were not available on site (to be mailed) but I am pleased that the recognition was, as the normal ceremony (less awards) was there & pictures were taken. I applaud them however for their efforts because it takes guts to try to improve. It was family oriented & offered a festival, free to participants.

Sunday agenda-race

Based on races I considered, the choice was also simple:

a. new york spartan sprint (adventure)
b. RNR San Diego marathon & 1/2
c. twilight 5k

Remain local! I planned on c., eliminating the rest but believe it or not, I was convinced by the master of ceremonies, Berta, to pass on this for a get together with friends I have known within my running 'career'. You know she is good if she can get the runner who has & could win again at c., Ronnie Hollassie. On top of that, the legendary Fred Franklin. Everybody knows there is a better chance of the Panthers getting to the playoffs than convincing me to skip a race but her timing was right. In addition, another legend Louis Best was there. I was happy to see Jose & Selma after so many years, plus Dee with Ronnie's child. We got to watch the heat take control of the series so it was a great day despite not racing.

Of course, I did train! Since I hadn't rolled in a while, I pulled out my inlines & did 12 miles in the morning, battling the wind. Lucky for me, I was only a minute off my time.

Memorial day weekend

Memorial day weekend is upon us. Let us all show our respect for the troops who gave the ultimate sacrifice to protect & defend our freedom. Too many people enjoy the off at the beach while, for the soldiers, life is a bitch! Also, this is the last weekend in May.

Saturday agenda-train!

Believe it or not, I did not race. The last ride by Elite cycling was on. I rode to the store but had shift/slipping problems. Had to get that fixed then rode back home.

Sunday agenda-race!

Very simple for me, either tradewinds tri or off trail run. After choosing the former, do I solo or relay? After selecting my teammates from the season opener tri, same venue, the race was on! Mike K was coming off an injury plus a new one (mostly soreness) created having by fun the previous day. Fortunately, Pam got a PR, as did I, in our respective disciplines. We not only won the relay (co-ed) division but was the only team to break an hour! Praise the Lord!

Monday agenda-race!

I had to chose between proximity & tried and true (weston memorial) over the other one in Boca; big mistake! Despite logging in my fastest 5k time of the year (by a second), I didnt even make the top 5 in my age group (off by 1), whereas in the previous group, I would've gotten 3rd. If it hadn't been for the finishers medal (1st time ever doing this), I would've walked away empty handed (less a tshirt). They had a pancake breakfast but that was about it. I took off to get my penalty run (required if I fail to break 19 or make the podium) out the way then back to the drawing board!

The end?

A whole bunch of hype was made by some religious group looking for publicity, I think, that today would be the last day of earth, (judgement day) then rapture for those who qualify. While I hope to go up to meet & stay with my maker, now is not the time. Man likes to set concrete dates and times; only God knows what & when he wants to do something. Pray and do your best. Special props to the troops; it's armed forces day.

Saturday agenda-race!

I had a nice selection today:

1. muddy buddy (TN)
2. madeira beach mini tri
3. club med race series (5k/10k/sprint/Olympic)
4. covenant house 5k
5. siennas steps 5k
6. tarzans cup adventure race
7. tour de gables 5k

Eliminate 1, 2 & 3 due to distance. #6  is not a standard run. The last one was the closest but also has among the worst age divisions; I pass. I like both 4 & 5 but can only choose 1. Using the been there, done that rule, #5 won.

External conditions were bad (hot, humid & a bit windy). I wasn't at my best so I was not pleased when Walthon, Humberto & Gene showed up. The former won as expected and I was challenged by the latter as I feared for an elite position. Even though my time was nothing to write home about, I was blessed by the Lord to overcome 3 great masters (I was 5th beginning final mile) & take the last overall position (3rd). The guy I passed near last moment turned out to be a master & had I failed, I would've fallen to age group since no master title was offered. Medals were given to all who placed.

Sunday agenda-race!

Easier to choose from this list:

a. madeira beach sprint tri
b. walk-it! challenge 5k (fun run)
c. stride for hope 5k
d. let my people run 5k

a. requires a swimmer so that's out. I won't do fun runs over local races; strike b. I don't remember where c. was nor if awards were available so I took a tried & true.

It was run on a familiar course (fantasy of lights) unlike the last one. Remarkably, I did much worse but left pleased because the good Lord gave me enough power & speed to get past a runner I didn't realize was a master to take that title. Luckily, 4th overall clinched that position, a fight that was won in the final mile. Plaques to overall & master, medals to the rest.

Mid month crisis (May)

The Mid month crisis has returned, this time in May. Yesterday was the infamous Friday the 13th. I have yet to break 19, however, I refuse to retire.

Saturday agenda-race!

I had a plethora of choices but could only do 1:

a. river rock sports festival (VA)
b. carolinas super spartan
c. muddy buddy (2 days in Austin)
d. fit2run 4 miler
e. pal of hallandale 5k
f. MS breakaway to key largo (2 day)
g. keys 100

Eliminate the first 3 due to distance. I was invited to join a team with Spencer, an elite runner, but was informed with too short a notice and was unable to get the finances together; scratch. f. is a non competitive fund raising ride and you know running races override. With 5k as my favorite distance, plus the proximity rule, d. loses!

I was also drawn to e. because, in the 20+ years I've been racing, I never did one that had us run on a horse track. Technically, no matter what I do, I get a PR. The race began with the famous horn tune that begins a horse race. We bagan on the hard packed dirt track and the lap was almost a mile. The 2nd mile took us through the parking lot and concession area (weaving) then back on the track for the final mile. It seemed funny seeing those furlong markers. I tried to stay near the rail but mostly wanted to be on the hardest paths. When the dust cleared, I made the dirty dozen and won my age group. I was not happy that I failed to beat someone I usually do but now I'm in a different category. I was actually surprised I broke 20 considered 2/3 of the race was on dirt! The top 3 masters all broke 19; Allan W was not in that number! He did win is his age group, my former. Sadly, he moves into mine in a few months. Gotta take advantage while I can. All overalls got special awards, plus a medal. The rest of us who placed just got medals. I was hoping for a master title but lost the bet!

Sunday agenda-race!

From the selection below, the choice was simpler:

a. JCC posnack 5k
b. run for relief 5k
c. tri Miami (& du)
d. MS breakaway back to Miami (2 day)

It's the middle of the month! Normally, I would do c. but decided to do an inaugural race, b. It was to help out Haiti and began at peacock park. Again, history, as I have never done a race that began & finished there. The course was better than ALS/CPA as there were only 2 turn arounds, while every where else was straight. The clouds kept it cooler but the winds picked up, making for a challenge. My buddy Gene took off like a bat out of hell & broke the first mile in 5:48. I was happy I broke 6 minutes for the first time in months! However, we both broke down in the subsequent mile, plus his shoe laces came undone; I passed him halfway through that mile. When the dust cleared, I was fifth overall, top master but since that title was not offered, I had to settle for age group. Jon W was in the top 3, getting a specially made award; I picked his up as he went to another event. The rest of us got medals. The crisis continues as I failed to break 19 but at least the success continued as well when I made the podium.

As I proceeded home, I got stuck in traffic (cops held us) waiting for some cyclists to cross. When this happened again toward the busway near home, I realized event d. was in effect. I stopped at the SAG, chatted a bit then went home, got my bike and joined in. When I reached the 2nd SAG, I met up with friends (Suzy & Jacky). I rode with them until I reached a street I knew passes by another friend. It began to rain, I said hello to her then headed home. Yep, it got really bad. Stopped by the original SAG, chatted then concluded the exercise day. I wound up doing about 19 miles in total & got a flat less than a quarter mile from my home; bummer! The crisis continues.

Congrats to all who competed or participated in activities.

Mother's day weekend

Mother's day weekend is upon us. Cinco de Mayo passed by on Thursday. Yesterday, I yelled 'T.G.I.F.!

Saturday agenda-race!

Seems like everybody wanted to cram races on today so as to spend time with their mothers tomorrow. Good for them, bad for us athletes. Check out today's selection below:

1. county line 5k (englewood)
2. turtle trot 5k (Jupiter)
3. race for the arts 5k (lake worth)
4. big cardio 5k
5. run for the roses 5k
6. lou gehrigs disease 5k/10k (Miami)

You think #6 would have been my choice because its the closest to my home but not! They have no master title and I assume they would be unceremonious like the cpa 1040k if I were fortunate enough to place. On top of that, the best I could get is a medal. 1 is definitely out. I passed on 2 & 3 since both were deep north in palm beach county. Also, had a bad experience at #3 last time. I have done 4 & 5 before but this time I was forced to choose one since they both start around the same time.

I ran for the roses because:

1. 3 deep with several title categories
2. mystery award (usually not a medal).
3. couple option

Although I couldve been 3 oa in the race I originally planned on doing, this one almost guaranteed me an award & I sure needed to cash in as I was not feeling so well. I scrambled to get another female as the one I selected originally did not show up. When the dust cleared, I was blessed by the Lord to take the last master spot despite a dismal performance. Congratulations to Pam R on winning her age group & taking the grandma title. Oh by the way, we did well enough to win the odd couple title! Pam racked up 3 awards & won in a raffle to boot!

Sunday's agenda-mother's day

Hope all mothers & potentials have a happy one. By the grace of God, I got to participate in 2 events.

Event 1: Chi running clinic/fun run featuring Bryan Huberty

I found out about this near the last minute. With no woman to be with, I might as well exercise so I added this to my regimen. I saw more people I knew than I expected. We began at Alice Wainright over the rick but I had to use the bathroom. I continued til a point across from the marine stadium then turned around & headed back. I did approximately 4 miles. After some hydration (O.N.E. was out there), I took off for the next one.

Event 2: K-swiss fun run

This was put on by mother & owner of footworks, Laurie; she did a great job & I wished her a happy mom day. We began at an unusual location, took to the Nike trail, crossed the bridge, then head over the grass (my variation), on the back road then cut through grass to get back on red road to return to the start. I tried on a pair of K-swiss (felt good). They had hot breakfast available & mimosa (had 1 by mistake). K-swiss had t-shirts & towels ready & there was plenty to drink. A bounce house was set up for the kids. This was kind of a small scale version of the footworks fun run of the past that was held at night.

After that, a visit to mom then homeward to work & rest. Quite a weekend.

April showers bring May flowers

April showers bring May flowers or lots of races? As a runner, I choose the latter. This is a transition weekend, perfect for the title.

Tonights's agenda-corporate run

Many, especially Ronnie Hollassie, run this seriously but for most this is their only active participation in running for the year. The majority are walkers. The field over 20k strong. Except for my initial year's dealing with this race, I use it primarily for training, usually to reinforce my walking skills. Since I don't work in the Gables any more, travel to it is even worse. Plus parking in downtown is very difficult. The first time in years, I passed on it at the last moment; I actually had dressed to go but race start was in 45 minutes & I was still at home. Heard through the grapevine that the bridge went up delaying the entire field; glad I passed on it.

Tomorrow's agenda-TGI 5k

An inaugural evening race held in palm beach county. I have to pass due to the following:

1. Start time is 15 minutes after I get out of work
2. distance-located in downtown west palm beach
3. cost-entry fee is high (includes sun fest concert) and gas to travel

Plus, I'm not fond of night races. Lots of rain today, truly April showers.

Saturday's agenda-race!

This is the last day of the month for racing and decided to choose 1 from the following:

1. Kentucky derby marathon
2. Nashville marathon
3. Georgia spartan sprint
4. rock the run 5k
5. kids in distress cross country beach run/walk

Due to extreme distance, eliminate the first 3. I struggled enough with barefoot on beach, plus it seemed more like a fun run so #4 wins!

This is my last race of the month. I did this one before so therefore I was aware of course (lots of turns & up the ramp finish). The late start insured a hot & humid race. what I couldn't imagine was the faulty start. It started 5 minutes later & the lead vehicle (on right side of road)did not move at first then went slowly. Worse, a marching band was positioned on the left side of road. Most of us went nearly single file between them while others ran off road in the grass and we lead in front of the lead vehicle! I had to watch my footing due to wet ground as well. When the dust cleared, I was fortunate to win my age group despite barely clearing 20 & made the baker's dozen; God is good!

Despite all of that, I was impressed with the improvements that were made. Last year, the men's cotton tshirts ran out & they promised to mail it; that didn't happen. This year, tech shirts were given out & I actually got one! I think I got some kind of medal last year but this year, a unique trophy I never got before; amazing, since I've been racing over 20 years. They retained the catered breakfast-good but made parking difficult-bad. I wish masters went 3 deep.

Sunday's agenda-race!

This is the first day of the month for racing and decided to choose 1 from the following:

a. st anthony's triathlon
b. madd dash 5k
c. sallarulos race for champions 5k
d. down & dirty 5/10k

Lack of a swimmer rules out a. I originally planned on d. but got locked out, therefore I had to make a quick decision. Normally, I would do an inaugural (b.) and in hindsight, would have been the right choice but my dislike with the parking and the course, I instead stuck to tried & true.

Big mistake! It was a high quality race. Despite a better performance, I had to settle for 2nd in my age group. If I had been in the previous category, I would have won easily, even with a 7 minute pace! Instead, all who placed were sub 20; praise the Lord I met the challenge. Runner's depot showed out here, with Chris winning & Jon a close 2nd. Louis won his age group. A couple of other teammate made their mark as well. Picking races is often like rolling dice; this time I crapped out. I forfeited a master title & plaque for an age group medal. Average post race. The event organizer spent too much time giving out plaques for sponsors & just as long giving out medals to the athletes.

I gotta train more instead of stopping to smell the may flowers.

Easter weekend

Easter weekend is upon us. Yesterday was good Friday and tomorrow is Easter itself, the day our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ was risen. Therefore, I think of today as 'the calm before the storm'. Apparently, many race directors did too as today is loaded with races & nothing for tomorrow.

Today's agenda-race!

These are the events up for consideration:

1. inaugural women for women 5k-10k (lake worth)
2. blue barrettes for SIDS (boca)
3. egg hunt du/tri
4. run like a bunny 5k
5. spartan race at oleta
6. sun smart 5k

Eliminate the first=women only! After my struggles at barefoot at the beach, and expenses, I ruled out #5. Last year, I began the publix du series with #3 but since that series was eliminated & the fact that I'll be forced into the toughest age group, I passed on it this year. Based on last year's results and my current performance, I had to rule out #4.

Morning agenda-sun smart 5k

I missed this last year and would have passed on it again if the race director had not visited Niketown to promote it plus listen to my input to add 3 master titles. I also suggested plaques for the overall positions. Based on conditions (external=course, late start plus heat, humidity and wind, internal=tight & tired), this worked for me in regards to a podium finish; praise the Lord! It was costly to get in (toll+park fee=$7.50), and then there's the race entry. Medals for age groupers were decent, as was the post race festivities. This was the closest one to my house; proximity rules!

Evening agenda-blue barrettes for SIDS 5k

Since no race (rumored only 1 in entire state of Florida & was very far) was scheduled for Easter, I chose this one to make up the difference. I missed this last year due to distance (Boca) and time (6 pm) but I remembered that George did it back then. Although the odds were stacked against me, I was blessed by God to still place. I dont plan on doing this one again for the following reasons:

1. no overall titles
2. no master titles
3. 10 year age groups

Jon bumped me to 2nd age group due to all of the above, meaning I was lucky to get that generic medal (no date, place, barely tells you what the name of the race was). Post race was superb for meat eaters, pathetic for me.

Sunday's agenda-Easter!

Day to recognize our Lord and savior's resurrection. They tried to take him out but failed. I felt blessed to have made the top ten & the podium in both races this weekend. I used this day to train on my bike. Originally, I set out to do a memorial ride in regards to several cyclists killed within a week's span but I missed the group. So, I rode solo from Viscaya through Bill Bagg's park to Virginia key (took all roads) & on way back, got a flat. I had to ride about 4 miles like that back to my car, making for a very tough training session. The Lord allowed me to survive this.

Taxing birthday weekend

This is a Taxing birthday weekend. Why? Yesterday marked yet another milestone in my life-it was my birthday! On top of that, this is a transition year. Already, I made over 20 years since my first race. Now, I just graduated from the previous age category to the 45-49, the toughest group yet. I now have to contend with the likes of Walthon, Mike Kelly, Humberto, Allan (both of them), Brian Keno, Matt Triggs, the list goes on. Pray for me.

Before I made the transition, it was possible to do a corporate run in palm beach on the last day of my previous age group but I passed due to the distance & other personal obligations.

Today's agenda-CPA 1040k

This event was held on the normal deadline day but in observance of a certain holiday, it was moved to Monday. I usually do this event to make a 3 race weekend but made a bold move and declined on the following grounds:

1. nursing an injury. I was fortunate to place despite that last weekend
2. night race. It was very hot & humid as expected.
3. cost. entry fee too much.
4. generic medals. if I were lucky to place, the best I'd get is a medal with a sticker on it.

I did visit to cheer on my friends. I did .5 k with Leo to get him on track. Congrats to STOL's Gene & Leo on placing, along with the legendary Fred.

They all did the 5k. The 10k went off first.

Saturday agenda-race!

This is what I had to choose from:

a. child of the sun urban sprint tri (lakeland)
b. skirts on the run 5k (fun in ft myers)
c. YMCA 5k (boca)
d. barefoot on the beach 5k
e. fight for air climb

Without a swimmer, strike a. b. was a woman's fun run event, strike on 2 accounts, plus far. The last one doesn't involve running at all, strike that. Since d. was put on by Kelly B, a good triathlete friend, I passed on c.

This event was unique in that you are not allowed to use running shoes. You must be barefoot or like such (socks & vibrims allowed). Plus the course was on soft sand. It was more challenging than I realized. This was my first race under my new age category. Despite my struggles, the Lord allowed me to place in the dirty dozen (top ten male) and win my age group. It was a late start race on a hot & humid day with absolutely no shade plus was windy.

Sunday agenda-race!

This is what sparked my interest:

1. wahine (diva) half marathon at Honolulu
2. Pittsburgh marathon
3. wellness tri (boca)
4. AEF 5k
5. oleta trail run 5/10/half

Passed on the first because not only was it very far but was for women only. #2 also too far. The last one was the closest but I'd rather a traditional race rather than a trail one. Without a swimmer, 3 is out but however, I did visit to say hello to fellow multisport athletes after I completed #4.

I don't remember this race before but definitely ran the course (Markham park). Although the external conditions improved (not as hot due to cloud cover & hardly any wind), my internal conditions worsened. I felt tight plus the injury plagued me worse. I had to do a few striders to try & shake it out. Even though this was a low quantity race, I saw a high quality field. Many who I feared my show, did. Walthon, Allan N, Humberto, to name a few. By the grace of God, I made the top ten & the center master title! That earned me a plaque in lieu of a medal & 1st master win within my new age category.

Monday agenda-tax deadline day!

Not to worry. I already filed. To all runners around the world, it's the day for the Boston marathon; congrats to all finishers.

Honorable mention

* Runners Depot ruled over the weekend & I thank the Lord I was able to contribute. Special note: Chris O won the 5k I did on Sunday. Spencer survived tough conditions. Mike, Renee & many more finished well.
* Linda finally does a relay; sadly, not with me. Congrats to the team on the finish.

last leg

I call this weekend last leg because its the last time I race in this age category.

I am forced to graduate to the next level, which unfortunately, is even more difficult than the one I'm in. Also, my right side torso has been bothering me for a few days, kinda having me run on my last leg.

Saturday agenda-race!

Here's what I was aware of in terms of races:

1. muddy buddy (orlando)
2. sharks tooth 10k (venice)
3. rayz awareness 5k (ormond beach)
4. Rooneys 5k (jupiter)
5. walk to cure diabetes (boca)
6. aids walk (sobe)
7. 7 mile bridge (keys)

Thanks to the rising gas prices, it was easy to eliminate any event not in the quad-county area; strike 1,2,3. The last one has a virtually impossible entry system & as far as I'm concerned, overrated (entry sys & cost). On top of that, I would not place even if I had a PR. I passed on the charity 'fun run' types, leaving #4.

Unlike Caroline M, I didnt do my research, & found out the hard way that this was a high quality race. On top of that, high quantity, with over 600 registered. Plus, I had to contend with an injury I got after training at the STOL run. By the grace of God, I was able squeek in and make the podium. 3 gals got by me but I staved off the 4th.

The post race party I have to rate as 6 star, first time I ever did that. Why? It was a professionally catered breakfast that featured pancakes, eggs, french toast (best I ever dad), and potatoes in addtion to sausage & bacon, all hot. Tradition drink plus orange juice. Best I've had all year, including the distance races. Happy I got another glass award.

Just last week, I failed to beat the bear at the Karhu 5k. I redeemed myself by beating the bunny this day. The prize paled in comparision. I got a t-shirt but missed out on free shoes; oh, well.
Sunday agenda-race!

There was a better selection of events today but I could only choose one:

a. Iron girl half & 5k
b. the Phil 10k
c. race for the magic bullet 5k
d. pines 5k pursuit
e. nautica triathlon

You can rule out a.=women only. e. requires a swimmer & the lack of that removed it from my schedule. I heard good things about b. from a friend who did the inaugural last year but due to rising gas prices, I pass. Since I had sucess the previous day with Accuchiptiming scoring that event, I stuck with them today; d. is out!

Although this was a low quantity race, enough quality showed up to concern me. In fact, that plus the fact my injury worsened, cost me the master title & the wonderful glass trophy I once won in the past. It was so bad, I was back in the position of praying that I place at all, just like the previous event.

It turned out to be an interesting race. I noticed pre-mediatated collaboration between a female contender for overall title & a male runner for an opposing racing team. Meanwhile, there was woman representing my racing team, Runners depot, who was in second place approaching mile 1. Once my injury started to subside, I decided to help pace her to victory. We got past them after about a mile & a half. She stuck with until the sprint zone whereas I took off. This time I wanted to beat all the woman, reversing my fate of the Rooney 5k. Except for 3rd overall, the top 5 all broke 19 and consisted of master runners. I was the first overall male who didnt break 19!

This one featured a 5 star post race, since it had pancakes & eggs plus those meats. However, the eggs didnt compare to that of Rooneys. Not so happy that only medals were given to age groupers but it beat the alternative. I've had worse. At least these had info & had 3D image. I improved in position but not in time. Course had bridges & 2 sharp turn arounds plus my internal condition.
