The last weekend '09
Saturday agenda-run
Often referred to as the last run (of the weekend), I was scheduled to head south for a race. Unfortunately, it didn't pan out, leaving the resolution 5k as the last event option. Ya'll know I'm not a big fan of paying for a fun run so I opted for a long overdue long training run. I need to prepare for the upcoming distance races I have planned, and due to racing, have not done much more than 5k's. Besides, I'd have to head up north, early in the morning, wasting gas, when I can (& did) get similar camaraderie down here closer to home. I began around the circle, went over the Rick then turned around at the base to return, gaining 14 or so additional mileage. Weather was wonderful for a run, minus the wind.
Sunday agenda-ride
Also referred to as the last ride (of the weekend), this is my chance to cross train long because I have been limited to time trials due to the busy holiday schedule at work, & in my life, in general. The ride begins from home utilizing the busway & paths to reach US 1 in Florida city; that's approximately 15 miles out! Going up was a breeze (literally) but the return trip required going against the wind; superb training. I completed it all under 2 hours on a tri retro-fitted, steel road bike. Judging by how I felt, I need to do this over the 5 mile race I almost did. I must prepare for the new year!.

Merry Christmas '09
Some people can't understand me, or worse, dislike me because I never celebrate any holiday in the traditional sense, especially obvious because all begin with either training or racing, but I do honor and enjoy the special day in some fashion.
Including noche buena, I got to see all my family that's still in town. My dad was afraid that this year I would not be available for our traditional Christmas training run. As fate had it, I called him because I knew he couldn't drive down as usual. By the grace of God, we met up and put in a good hour or so together and were thankful of the greatest gift we could have- our ability to exercise, especially the run. Correction, second greatest because Jesus Christ is THE BEST! I did a skate warm up prior to the training, as well. It brought back memories because it trained where we originally did, way back 18 years ago, on our rise from the unknown. The Bell name is now well known and respected in the athletic community, & to some, feared (in a race); ha ha. I don't worry about receiving gifts but am always concerned about my health & ability to compete.

Saturday morning agenda-5k
The classics by the sea offered both a 10k & a 5k. The latter was chosen due to recent circumstances & the fact that this is not the only event planned for the day. Since it was along a1a, it was extremely windy and cold. Plus, the course was not entirely flat or straight. Hoping for an easy run, I was disappointed. Having not completely recovered from illness, I struggled, barely breaking 20. Naturally, that wouldn't cut it for the master title, & sadly, not enough to win the age group. Luckily, I got runner up. The awards were plaques for all who placed.
Saturday afternoon agenda-5k
Although I heard not an inaugural, it was my first time running this one. Jon was a no show at the previous event but came and won this one over Andrew. Even though Drew didn't win, he got all the recognition, having just completed the half at the Barbados marathon a couple of weeks ago, with an interview from media. Meanwhile, I had my little battle. Although my time was better than earlier, it still was substandard, robbing me of a chance to win the master trophy; I was stuck with a generic, spinning medal. Granted, I was pleased to win my age group since I had some competition to deal with. Had I pulled that dismal time in this race, I would have been humiliated. The course was unforgiving, full of turns & many areas on small paths. For a small race, I was amazed they had 5 star post refreshment, especially for meat eaters.
Saturday evening agenda
The GFLRRC holiday pajama party was my last event of the day. It was the most enjoyable in that I did not have to race prior to the refreshments. I found out during the course of the event that it was the 10th anniversary of this special occasion; the Barnards were together for twice that. It drew so many runners I knew & was designed to honor many volunteers who help make their races possible.
Sunday agenda-train
The Jacksonville marathon (& half) occurred today. Well, #1, I'm not at my best & #2, without a plane ticket, I'd have to drive and that's a bit too far, plus so little time after all those activities yesterday. Instead, I went for a medium run (7.5 miles) that I call the tour de park since it went through the park where the Miami man half iron was held. Normally, I would have done a long ride but with a marathon coming up, I gotta put in some mileage.

Hanukkah
Saturday agenda-5k
Normally, I do the holiday run, which is less than 5 miles away from my home, but in light of my current struggles, I forewent that & headed up north. The one in palmetto bay featured both a 5k & a 10k and draws a minimum of 500. Plus, you have to be on top of your game to place, and if you do, the best you can get is a medal. So, in keeping with this year's theme, I did the inaugural turn on the light 5k. My chances were increased with top 3 overall & masters categories, which featured tiles to the winners. After that, it was similar to the holiday run-medals but with more detail, including the ribbon. Still sick, I kept with my promise (pre-registered) and competed. Although a low quantity, it was high quality (fast runners). This was the race for the masters as the top 6 positions were filled by 40+ men! Praise the Lord, I snuck in the back door despite a dismal performance. Afterwards, I was coughing & hacking, still suffering from the illness, although on the downslope.
Saturday morning agenda-5k
After a disappointing day previously, I came determined to do better. The run for tomorrow featured both a half marathon & 5k. I chose the latter due to my internal condition. Unfortunately for me, I had stiff competition. Fortunately, the Lord allowed me to recover enough to compete & offer a challenge to them. Although I lost in the .1, I left with a great feeling because I finally broke the nearly 2 month drought on meeting my qualifying 5k standard (sub 19). On top of that, I got a master title. Although stingy, they had 5 star post race refreshments (pancakes). Plaques for the overall & master was nice.
Sunday afternoon agenda-mile run
When I train at niketown, I often do what I call the one mile blast (try to keep up with elite, fast runners); that training prepared me for this race. I crossed into Palm beach county to try this one for the first time. Some of the best showed up, notably, the overall female winner, Sonia (6th overall). Since I was under the weather, this year, I skipped my tack on after the weston event, giving me the chance to do a double header. By the grace of God, I broke six minutes (14 overall) & won my age group, the requirement to get the prize (gift certificate); this was an all or nothing race. Thankfully, Jon was not present. Pathetic post race with barely water; some food was for sale. Following that was a holiday parade; I got the feeling of being at the scaled down, day version of the Edison fantasy of lights 5k.
Honorable mention
* The Lord did not forsake me!
* George places at both 5k events.
* Runners depot took top 2 slots in half, Joel won.
* Louis got a grand master position

Second to won
Saturday agenda- 5k
There were 4 local events happening today. Unfortunately I couldn't do them all but by the grace of God, I did half-a double header!
1. jingle bell jog 5k
2. palm beach 5k
3. dare to care 5k
4. calvary chapel 5k
Even on a goood day, I never had success at event 1, so it was a no brainer to skip it. Traditionally, I do #2 then walk over to the expo to pick up the packets for the relay, but this is the year to do different stuff (I love inaugurals), so I took a gander at a couple of other new events. By passing on the 1st two, I was able to do the latter 2 because of different start times & proximity.
Dare to care 5k
Originally set for 7 am, my worst fear came to fruition-a delay of 15 minutes-due to inclement weather. My favorite runner, who wears a shirt that say 'yell, go art!', was at this event (he is known for doing distance races, particularly marathons). He said I'd probably win this race because he didn't see anyone he knew that could run faster than me. I quickly responded that there may be under cover runners (unknown athletes that can run fast);lo & behold, I was right! Some crosscountry kid blew me away with a 17 something time. Unbelievably, there was no one between him & I; a gigantic gap! Unfortunately, I had to keep going past the finish line & miss all the festivities of this race, including my award, in order to make it to the other.
Calvary chapel 5k
The biggest challenge was not the races themselves but the commute between them. I left from well known quiet waters park to an unknown location that required gps assistance. I got me there but was blocked off, so I had to quickly find the alternative entrance. When I arrived, I had less than ten minutes to register, put on my # & chip then get to the starting line. One unforeseen circumstance was the distance from parking to the 'athletes area'-nearly a quarter mile. Obviously, I forwent all normal preparation & had to take off a bit tight from the previous race & the ride over. Initially, I was barely in the top 20 but as the race progressed, I advanced to the top 5, out of master contention. By a twist of fate, the runner I was following went the wrong way & we were both motioned to reverse & go around. By a wing and a prayer, that allowed me to advance 1 position. Within the final mile, I got past 2 others and despite a worse time, I finished with the same position as the previous event; God is good. I later discovered there was no master title. Lots to eat for meat lovers, just snacks for the rest. Unfortunately, only medals no matter if overall or age group. Teammate Jon took the title.
Sunday agenda-marathon weekend
For each year the marathon of the palm beaches had a relay division, I have chosen to do that as my last team event of the year; this year was no different. However, unlike previous years, I was unable to sign up athletes in advance. I literally had to wait till the expo. All of my teammates of last year backed out for one reason or another & I had to replace them with new, unknown talent. Like a blind date, I didn't know what to expect but was aware I did not have the strongest team. I couldve wimped out & not compete because you cant get beat if you're not in it but that's not my style. I'll do like I've done all year & roll the dice and see what happens. I centered the team around a promise I made to rising star at the publix du series. I picked the one who organized the palm 100 team & a young woman who consistently makes the top 3, if not overall, in the womans division. For some reason, the former athlete did not respond but thankfully, the dad knew a coach who had a son who can run, but never more than 3-4 miles. When I met up with him, I told both kids (the girl was 13 & the boy, I think 16) that believe in giving people a chance. I really didnt know what any member could really do. I went with Male-female x2 format, shouldering the largest distance to the boy, followed by the 20 something woman, yours truly & the girl to anchor. The distances were laid out in miles as follows:7.5, 6.5, 7 & 5.2. I found out the anchor had an injury & was thankful to pull out of her pre-registered half to be on the team. Needless to say, all performed admirably & despite being underdogs, we defeated all but 1 team-the one sponsored by a company, like runners depot. While I congratulate both of my teammate Spencer & Louis, I was an unfair fight in that they were able the best by free entry offer to its athletes, while every one on my team paid royally ($75!). On top of that, they had only 1 female;I had 2. By the grace of God, this was the first year that the top 3 positions were honored, plus they gave out decent trophies to each member; Praise the Lord. We were second to won.

Nightmare holiday weekend
Friday kicked off the Christmas season with the up early black Friday specials. It is a nightmare on the wallet, though; dream for the retailers. Could be considered a dream in that you can save money on items you needed but not so much on just stuff you wanted.
Saturday agenda-the last ride
Dubbed as such by Elite cycling store, a group of riders get together & ride from there to La Carreta in key Biscayne, then afterwards, return to a post ride refreshments in house. I chose to go to the end (just in front of the park entrance), adding a bit more distance. The ride with the multiple stops (yes, we obeyed most traffic lights) took over 3 hours. I felt the training was more advantageous than the long drive down to Key west for the hog's breath 5k.
Sunday agenda-the last run
If I chose to travel, I could've done the space coast marathon (or half) or go over to Tampa for a jingle 5k; I have plenty of travelling to do, so I passed on those. I considered doing a trail run, in which 3 distances were offered: 5, 10, & 15 k but mother nature ended that when I got a stomach ache. I did a rare thing & decided to rest & slept till late. Bell standards do not allow me to escape workouts so I did a cross country tempo run near home. I call it the last run based on the weekend but I can actually run tomorrow as well.
Tomorrow, the last day of the month, is considered to be cyber Monday, the high tech version of black Friday but totally online. Also, a nightmare but on your credit; dream for the retailers. The best news of all is that at midnight, the hurricane season officially ends. However, God doesn't always follow our rules!
Honorable mention
* Terry does the half at space coast marathon.
* Aldo does the full space coast marathon.

Thanksgiving 09
Today's agenda-a turkey trot!
With so many to choose from ( a sweet dream for me), I had to narrow it down using one of my many guidelines. Today, I invoked the been there, done that rule, which required me to travel a bit far.
With the umpteen number of races available, I narrowed it down to the following:
1. run Miami turkey trot 5k/10k- traditionally the one I choose. Since the 10k costs more & is merely a 2 looper, I usually go for the former. If I do well & place, the most I can get is a medal.
2. tamarac turkey trot- a 5k in which I have never had success, so I have no idea what I could have won. Through the grape vine, I heard trophies for first, the rest medals. Parking is on the level with Miami beach & downtown Miami-terrible.
3. Adolph & Rose Levis JCC turkey trot-inaugural event, much like a blind date- you don't know what to expect but satisfies the bt,dt rule.
4. Run for the pies 4 miler- also satisfies the bt,dt rule since I have never done it.
With 3 & 4 satisfying the bt,dt rule, next is the proximity rule, eliminating the latter. Plus, I am still recovering from injury.
I was hoping for an easy race among all nobodies, but naturally, that didn't happen. Mike (who beat me at the break through 5k) & Harrie (beat me last Sunday) showed up. Plus, with ten year age groups and no master title(s), my chances became slimmer when it was announced that over 400 showed up (333 finished)! The course was horrific because the start was the finish line (crammed in a narrow area) & you have turn immediately (within 100 feet). There were lots of turn arounds. Although slightly humid, it was cool & cloudy. Every one was told to advance to the starting mat, we waited nearly 5 minutes & then the air horn sounds, causing mass confusion because there was absolutely no warning, no count down, nothing! Come to think of it, may have been able to break 19 had it not been for that; only God knows. Although I lost the sprint battle against Harrie, I was blessed to be able to place at all considering the aforementioned. The winner of the age group was in the low 18s.
Honorable mention
* Louis gets 2 pl age 5k at Miami (estimated 4000 between both events)
* Carol P is 2nd overall female 10k at Miami
* George wins age at tamarac (1383 finishers)
* Ronnie wins the tamarac
* Sonia is overall female at the 4 miler (1364 finishers)

No V M bray
Saturday morning agenda-5k
This weekend was a runners dream. So much so, that Jon W ran 5 events (I heard through the grapevine actually 6, including Fri)! Due to injury & finances, I did less.
I chose to head down south for the mariner 5k. I hadnt done it in years due to conflicts. I played it smart & did the racewalk to conserve for the main event at night. I was hoping for an easy race but was challenged by a female racewalker that had a running start. Despite that bit of cheating, I managed to outwalk her for the victory & one of my better times (her best). It was an out (no back) course, straight & flat.
Saturday evening agenda-5k
This is the main event. Despite my best time since the car accident, I came up short. Why? They got cheap with the age categories (last year, top 5 masters, this year only 3) and awards (key chain medals) compounded with the fact that Jon was so tired, he failed to break 18, pushing me down & out. Post race was ok but they were stingy with the food, giving only 1 serving & leaving half of it unserved after all had finished. This event was more hype than anything else because they made it difficult to enter it (have to register way in advance). Also pathetic was only half the course was lit, leaving too many dangerous pitch black spots. I was so disappointed, I may not repeat it.
Sunday agenda-5k
Hoping to improve upon the previous day, I entered yet another. However, it was much worse. Both internal & external conditions were horrible. To expound upon the latter, it was hot & humid plus the markham course has hills & curves. It was an afternoon race (4 pm) to boot. Internally, I was tired & tight & later sick to my stomach. By the grace of God, I won my age group with a dismal time. If I had run normally, I would have won the master title. Post race was 5 star for meat eaters, 3 otherwise. They gave out generic medals for all age groups, but I'll take that over the alternative. Runners depot swept the top 3 categories, with Jon on top.
Honorable mention
* Jon W gets hardware in all his events
* George wins his 'triple crown'

Veteran
Wednesday agenda-Veterans day
Hope all have enjoyed the day. I did because, not only did I get to run (thanks to Jon) but I spent a little time with friends who also ran. It was a night race that went over bridges (my favorite, ha ha). We started on the crest of one & ran against the wind to the turn around, in the dark. When I do a mystery race, its usually small & primitive; this was the opposite as it used the chrono tag & drew over 750 participants. I had a great mile (sub 6) and then it went downhill from there. I failed to break 20 again, but by the grace of God, I still won my age group;Jon was 5th overall but fell to top master (ill take that any day). Along for the ride was Alan & Linda. Alan is the owner of accuchiptiming.com & does a wonderful job at that but said he's starting to miss his roots-running, so he participated in this race. I usually bring in runners to the world of multisport (tri & du) but Linda, a triathlete, is a reverse case and has entered my domain. She has improved so much under my tootledge that I missed her finish (sub 34) by mere seconds when interrupted en route by a friend. She has done an unbelievable number of races since we met, surpassing most athletes;one event per month (12 max) is the normal limit for someone actively racing. After that, it takes a better than average to an elite athlete with heavy passion &/or training to survive more.
Friday agenda-5k
Disappointed with how it conducted last year & in consideration of my injury, I decided to visit rather than race this one. Last year, medals were given instead of the crystal like trophies. They had horrible age categories & worse, I was listed as winning my age group all the way until awards were actually given out. To my dismay, some mysterious runner took the title. Besides, I couldn't get there in time to start as the main road to get there was blocked by law enforcement. Post race was 4 star.
Most say I am half crazy. Following this sentence may prove my critics right.
Saturday agenda-half
I decided to do the inaugural Jewfish creek half marathon. Kinda a tough decision knowing that I am scheduled to run the 13.1 marathon on Sunday. However, due to the number of 5k races out there, this would be the only way to force me to do required long runs in preparation for the Goofy challenge. This one was only the second time in my career that I headed down south (Monroe county) for a distance race. Aware of my foot injury, I had to run carefully. It was a straight, out & back course. Other than the wind & the bridge itself, the external conditions were great (cool day). I was unable to place due to the poor age categories (no master & ten year age groups). I finished better than a quarter to 2 hours. Post race was less than Niketown. Plus, they had the audacity to have most of food there for sale, even if you were a runner! Teammate Jon won the 5k that was also hosted.
Sunday agenda-half
This was the main event & the one most were training for. This is evident by the attendance of over 2,000. I began the event both injured & tight from the previous day. Cognizant that my chances of placing were next to impossible, my only goal was to finish under 2 hours. By the grace of God, this came to fruition. Post race was 5 star with a pancake breakfast. Less cool & windy but the course had multiple curves & turns. This was well represented by Runners depot.
Honorable mention
* Louis wins age group at 13.1
* Jon takes home hardware from all the races.

Dog days
Saturday agenda-5k
Due to this injury, I had to pass on a double header opportunity that Jon accepted. I had to miss the wellington 5k & race for the troops 5k, both in Palm beach & separated by 2 hours. However, thankfully, God allowed me to do one, good enough to satisfy my tune up requirement for endurance events. Problem is that I opened myself up for attack, as aforementioned. I lost all master positions & the respective trophies because of the lack of running due to the injury; I lost too much of my fitness. One guy was so elated because he got his 1st overall master title (3rd) over me by effectively swapping places. I had to settle for top in the age category & walk out with a generic medal (no race info on it) while he held a beautiful trophy. It was a humbling experience. I have to realize that if I decide to take chance, I have to deal with any consequences. On the bright side, I did place when there was a distinct possibility I'd walk out the same way I came in-with nothing.
Sunday agenda-Miami man
Put on by multirace, this event offered a half iron for both the tri & du & an international tri. With a bit of encouragement from Linda (kept talking about how shes done one), I decided to do my first half iron. Course you know I dont swim, therefore I am a du'er, not a tri'er. I picked the wrong day because there were record strong winds & gusts up to 30 mph. With cycling not exactly my strength, I was further challenged & suffered through the 56 miles. When started, only my right heel hurt in the first mile. When I finally finished that portion after over 3 hours, it was time to do a half marathon and both of my feet hurt. I had to go slow just to guarantee a finish. Despite dismal times, every dog has his day. By the grace of God, I not only finished but placed 3rd in my age group. I wanted to do this to get it out of my system. Now that its done, I am not likely gonna do it again; it was costly & tough.
Honorable mention
* George wins an award
* Linda missed an award by less than 30 secs; still proud of her to be 4th in age group

Halloween
Saturday agenda
A runner's dream, as I had many events to select from. Since I have been lacking in the long run dept (only one since the last season), I must select halves as training runs leading up to the Disney goofy challenge. First, here's what I missed:
1. Spooktackular 5k-had a Halloween theme much like I did today. George got 2nd in his division, a rarity, but was due to his condition
2. Safewalk 5k-Jon wins this one, Trish won & was 2nd only to him. With no master division, I wouldve fallen to age group
3. Walk like MADD 5k- a fun walk/run I wouldve skipped. It was for a good cause.
I did the inaugural Miami Beach Halloween half. I began with my heel still injured, so I knew I would struggle. The challenge was to hop/hobble/jog to complete it and hopefully fast enough to break 2 hours. By the grace of God, it came to fruition. I pray to recover from this ailment because I have so many more events to do but this condition will hamper my speed.
This was my last race of the month & I did the distance in costume (fatigues from head to toe) to honor the troops overseas. I normally do this at the race the troops du/tri but had done another tri instead.
Sunday agenda
On this day runs the New York city marathon. Due to the difficulty of entry & my finances, I will pass on that & remain at home to race. This also applies to a lesser known marathon in North Carolina. My choice now is between to halves-Daytona & Boca Raton. The former, my dad & I did the inaugural last year. In order for him to do that half while I do a 5k, the latter is the answer. I will be going into it aware of the possibility I will leave the same way I came-with nothing- due to my injury & the fact I ran a distance race prior. Unfortunately, my dad could not participate due to an unforeseen incident. Despite a dismal performance, I was blessed by the Lord to win my age group. It was by no means easy. I had to overcome injury & hustle at the end to take that position; the runner up was behind by a mere second.
While this was my first race of the month, it was Linda's first half of the year. She surprised me because the circumstances leading up to this event lead me to believe that, at best, she'd do a 5k, not a distance race. She hung in like a trooper & got that finishers medal. Ironically, we both did a half this Halloween weekend, just not on the same day or even in the same month.
Honorable mention
* George places in 5k on sat
* Jon wins on sat, 3 overall on sun
* Chuck & wife complete the Halloween half

Not pretty
Saturday agenda-5k
I chose to race rather than just run. For those satisfied with the latter, you could've done the human race 10k. Its a world wide event using Ipod for an unofficial 'race'. I did the schott 5k, benefiting challenged artists. I thought I picked an 'easy' race, and judging by the numbers, I seemed to be correct. Although there was a low quantity, to my dismay, of high quality in regards to master athletes. I had to battle to get from 6th to 3rd overall before failing to outkick in the dreaded .1! I dropped a position but won the master title by a mere second. Based on the time, it was not pretty but the job was done. Post race was 5 star with hot pancakes, eggs, hash browns & sausage, in addition to the traditional stuff. Top 3 overall & masters got framed prints designed by various challenged artists. Mine suffers from cerebral palsy & is wheel chair bound. Age groupers got black baseball style caps with race position on back.
After that, the day went downhill. I got stood off twice, kicked out, broken promises, then after dinner, lies & rejection, all from the same person, qualifying for dismissal; I don't need extra stress. Definitely, not pretty. The next day, I was like Trina's last hit, 'single again'.
Sunday agenda-5k
Since races automatically override pleasure events, I missed 2 bike tour rides, one in dade (homestead speedway) & one in broward; the former I did & enjoyed in the past. I was selected by the president of the south florida striders to join his master team in the boca cross country team challenge. He picked me along with fellow teammate Louis Molina, plus 2 other great runners, Billy Canavan & Isaac Izquirdo. Due to this commitment, I had to pass on 2 local races (Judicata & haulover) & 3 distance events: the wellington 10 miler, martin county Halloween half and marine corp half (Jax). I didn't realize how challenging this run would be. Although not hot & sunny (cloudy & foggy) I struggled with the humidity & the course. I barely broke 21 (not pretty) but fortunately, that was sufficient to help the team win the title. Ralph Guijarro, the team captain, kept the team trophy for the club. This was my 3rd event in a row involving team competition in which only 1 trophy was given. Sadly, I don't have any of them! The event was very small but loaded with talented &/or familiar athletes. Boca raton road runners organized it & took all titles except the master.
I'd to commend George for appearing at both events, despite not competing due to injury.

Theft
Saturday agenda-5k
I runner's paradise. I had to choose between 4 events:
1. race for the cure 5k
2. voice of love 5k
3. steps to independence 5k
4. splash & dash
I passed on the first for 2 reasons: 1. been there, done that & 2. no age group awards I have been there, done that at steps to independence as well, largely because there are awards. The last one was an aquathon & I am a land lover. Although it is stated as the 5th annual events, it was my first time hearing of it. I drew a small field (low quantity) but a good number of high quality athletes. I was hoping for an easy time but that was spoiled when Vieko & Jon W showed, along with other great master runners such as Walthon, Jorge Ramos, Keith Ball. In the final stretch, I edged out the masters to take the title. Jon W won despite wear & tear from the marathon last week. I was 2 seconds from second (overall). A good post race set up, 5 star for meat eaters (hot dogs). Only the top overall got a trophy; all others, including runner up, got medals. I was fortunate to do well because I had a rough week. Worse, I got victimized by an inside job (entire month's cash reserve gone(1st time ever)) followed up by an accident. But God is good, as not only did I win but also broke the 19 barrier for the first time this month.
Sunday agenda-Miami nice tri
A triathletes dream. Multirace held the race the troops du/tri. I used the 'been there, done that' rule & did the inaugural Miami nice tri. It was run well but not done well. Even though we were the top male team, we had to settle for second because, for the first time I can remember, there were no categories in the tri. The top co-ed team posted the fastest time. To add insult to injury, they gave only one 'glass' trophy for the entire the team. With all the money we put in, it felt like we got robbed. I was a bit disappointed with my run, but considering the foot injury, I was lucky. Although she didn't compete, Linda showed up to ease the day.

Championship weekend
Saturday agenda-duathlon championship
Although normally a tri is held along with the du, everybody had to 'du' it. Due to an amoeba that caused 2 deaths in the Polk county area, no one was allowed to swim. The quarter mile swim was replaced with a mile run. However, us who du, not tri, had to run 2 miles, hence why I got passed by at least 2, 1 female first then a male on the final leg. It was hot & humid. By the grace of God, I did win & placed 5th overall. When you check out the splits, you'll see how I almost lost (edged him out by a small margin) as he was tracking me down on the final run; proof positive that every second counts. However, even if I had lost to him, I built up enough points to win the series. That cushion made it easier to race but I still wanted to win. Each race was a battle to win the war (series); mission accomplished. Both George & I won in our respective categories. Linda did her first du (not by choice but by design); I bet she discovered how hard it is.
At packet up, I found out that team psych was holding a team competition. You know I like that so naturally I put on George, and after using the bathroom, got Linda; race day, prior to start, Inga. The team with the highest points wins a team trophy; our team won! With 3 out of 4 placing (George & I=1st, Inga=2nd), we overcame the others. Linda was hugging on that trophy like Michael Jordan did with the Bull's 1st championship. It was 'her' first trophy. The rest of us, who gained the points to win it, will not likely see it again.
Unfortunately, the park was closed, so no fun like last year but the good news was that the awards were given out around noon. This allowed for a return back to our turf during daylight & ample rest for the next day's event.
Sunday agenda-5k
Fresh off of victory, mentally I was ready, but physically, I was not. I was a bit tight & am still nursing an injury. Aptly titled the shark shuffle, many would have tried hard to take me down if they were aware of this. Fortunately, despite my struggles, including the weather, I managed to place 2nd in the masters. It wasn't easy but I did not leave empty handed. Overall & master winners got plaques, age groupers got 3d medals.
Honorable mention
* George wins race & series at championship & in age group at 5k
* Louis M wins age group
* Inga got 2nd in publix tri
* Jon W gets a pr (2:39) at Chicago marathon
* Linda finishes 1st du (race #25)

Fall?
Saturday agenda-5k
There were no local events, other than a fun run. However, there were 4 outside our normal realm. Last year, Jon & I did the pilot 5k. When there are choices, I often exercise the been there, done that rule. I thought about the sunnyside survivor event, which featured both a 5k & 10k, but it was a little distant. Thanks to Jon, we chose to stay on the East coast, where there were 2 races in the same city. One of them was more popular, while the other not; he chose the latter. Joining us was Accuchip's founder, Al Harding. Jon won easily but I was being challenged by a 17 year old kid from teamfast, a inline skate club. Rather than burn myself out, I decided to run tactically, rather than for time, hence my poor finish on the clock. However, the strategy was successful, as I was 2nd overall (won my age group). The prize was cheesy-a gift certificate for a local restaurant & a generic medal. Luckily, it was 3d. The post race, however, was good & had a live band (a family). Al enter a raffle & cleaned up! This, ironically, was put on by Runner's Depot, but in Vero.
Sunday agenda-5k
On this day, there were many races. This is a runners dream but I can't do them all; I have to choose.
1. Dunn's Run (5 mile & 5k)
2. girls wanna run 5k & mens mile (inaugural events)
3. 13.1 atlanta (inaugural event)
4. Race for the cure (Orlando)
5. race for the kids 5k & 10k
#3 & #4 were too far. #5 was close but I knew that one gave out medals & there was supposed to be a team competition at #1. Therefore, I chose the first one as the main event.
I have plenty of distance races coming up so I skipped that & did my favorite. Although I had a great first mile, my finish time was pathetic. Luckily, the turnout was low and I still got my age group and a top 5 finish. Then, I had to rush to do the Jon William challenge. Yep, I credit him for the next event. We had to hustle to get to the girls wanna run 5k, which featured also a men's mile. This was the first time I did a mile race, outside of track & field. The challenge for us was not the event itself but the commute between events. Unlike the previous race, I was satisfied with my time in this one. With just over a 5 & a half minute pace, I got 2nd my age group (40-49) which would have been 1st in the normal 5 year increment. What was funny is that Sonia, a elite female, was allowed to run in the men's mile; she was 2nd oa. Jon was 3 oa male.
Honorable mention
* George wins his age group
* Louis placed in 5 miler
* John G placed in 5 miler

Yom Kippur
Saturday agenda-5k
I already did a sickle cell 5k in Dade county;this one was in Broward. I saw Tim Nichols at the trilogy du'ing but today was his 1st 5k since moving back to Florida, or at least Broward. He'd ultimately beat me, as expected, to win the race but amazing did so without breaking 18. The top 3 overall were under 19; praise the Lord, I was one of them. However, something unusual happened. Like in Dade, I was 2nd male overall but my actual position was actually 3rd in the race. How can this happen? The overall female winner got past me by running sub 18:30!
Runner's Depot cleaned up by taking the top 2 male slots, the master (Allan) & Louis his age group. Jon was a no show.
Sunday agenda-triathlon
I have been involved with the escape to Miami triathlon since its inception 5 years ago. This was the inaugural year for sprint relays. I convinced a triathlete to just do the swim (her least favorite discipline) so that we could compete. I am indebted to her for being so gracious. Easier, was the runner, Gene. He was excited because he hadn't done a 5k in a while & it would be over a bridge. I was equally excited because I've always done the Olympic, either on wheels or run (I am a land lover), never the sprint. It was longer than usual, 13 miles. Although Inga was disappointed with her swim, she was in the top 3 of the relays. I thank God for allowing me to have another stellar ride to help the team. Gene did well on the run, never got passed. We beat all relays, including an all male team and on top of that, had the 5th fastest time of the sprint competition. We made history because we are the first sprint (co-ed) relay champions!
Honorable mention
* George wins is age group in 5k
* Linda made her debut in the escape Olympic & finishes, despite all odds
* Mike Nunez wins the sprint tri
* Edmundo was 2nd overall in the Olympic

Rosh Hashanah
Saturday agenda-5k
For so many years, I missed this event due to relay commitments with multirace series. After completing it, I realize I didn't really miss out, based on the award I got. My lack of fitness was evident based on the clock but this was due poor training as a result of injury & personal problems. However, I love the theme & idea of the race. The masters (40+ in age dubbed 'over the hill) went first (loved that) then 5 minutes later, the sub-masters (called the young & the restless) got to go. This staggered start is similar to the run for the roses, in which all ladies went 1st then the guy can try to catch 'em if you can! Unfortunately, the fastest of the tail group cant get to the top runners but instead must dodge the slower ones. Despite a dismal time, I won my age group & was 4th overall.
Sunday agenda-trilogy finale
I still laugh at how multirace runs a trilogy with 4 events, but this year, I am thankful. Our swimmer, Jenny, could not make the 3rd one, which would have been the final. This is dubbed the bonus round, true if you do all of them; the event with the slowest time gets dropped. Despite being 14 weeks pregnant, she agreed to swim (I was assured she was cleared by her doctor) in order to keep the team intact, as required by the new rules. She warned us (Matt, the runner & I) that we'd have to step it up because of her condition. Thank goodness we're good as a team. Can you believe she still broke 8 minutes? Of course, that's way off her normal pace which is often top swimmer out of the water but better than average. For some reason, our runner struggled, but despite that, he was among the top 3 fastest for the final leg among relay teams. I prayed for a great time on the bike because that it the longest portion of the tri & often dictates whether or not anyone sees the podium; the Lord answered. Although I failed to get the 22 average I set out for, I was in the upper 21's & got my personal best. The time was the 2nd fastest of all relays; woooo! If I didn't have that stellar performance, we were in jeopardy of getting beat by a team only a few points off our lead, and worse, a spot on the podium. We were the top co-ed relay team (even listed on the results) all the way up to the point awards were given out, then all of a sudden, we heard we were 2nd. Some mystery team was snuck in at the last possible moment to dash our hopes. That team just happened to win all splits as well. Ok, so we are runner ups and they won this battle but our combined efforts put us in the position to win the war (series)! This was our only loss (not first) but the fact we did so well was a testament to our determination. Imagine, a pregnant woman, the runner on a bike & the runner having a tough day, get set up (mystery team) & still go home with hardware; God is good.
Honorable mention
* Linda completes the 5k & the tri (#3)
* Linda completes the trilogy series & makes the top ten (#8 (pts)) of her age group
* George wins age group in 5k & du despite injury

Start of the running season
Saturday agenda-publix series
Since George & I are in the du series, we did not attend any 5k today. The multisport season has not yet ended, so I will still be involved with them while competing in running races until November, the season end of that sport. Unlike running, there really is an off season. In my 18 year career, I've only done 1 in December. Multirace used to have them in January (only company to dare), but due to poor attendance (mostly due to cold weather), he wisely followed the lead of everyone else. I heard February is slated for elimination for the same reason.
Although hot & humid, the wind was not much of a factor, allowing me to have a good bike time. There was an elite duathlon relay created just for them (no such category existed by ESM in the publix series) consisting of Elliot Mason & Rob Childers, owner of multirace. Naturally, they won & although uncontested, the result would have been the same. In terms of individual performance, in the 1st run, I was 3rd overall. I lost minimal positions on the bike, being passed mostly by triathletes and finished strong on the final run to earn 2nd overall in the entire event, top in my category. Next stop-the championship!
Sunday agenda-5k
I would have gone to the safety 5k in Aventura because it is closer to my home & I'd have a better chance at winning, but I can't because this is a club race (Runner's Depot); my loyalty is intact.
This race is the unofficial start of the running season despite the other 5k and is an RRCA championship race. The odds of me placing are slim but I must show allegiance to the team & will do my best to represent.
I woke up with my right heel injured but you know the code of the Bell. Naturally, I had to rely on the Lord to get through the race and pray that I do well enough to get on the podium. You know the gospel song, 'he might not come when you need him (not immediately upon request) but he'll be there right on time'; it came to pass. I got my cake (top in age group) & eat it too (under 19); thank you, Lord.
Oh, by the way, this event gave out rare trophies, while the other were common medals. Glad God led me the right way.
Honorable mention
* Luis M wins age group
* top 2 overall were Mike K & Jon W (Runner's Depot teammates)
* master winner was Mike T (Runner's Depot teammate)
* George won his age group at the other race

Labor day weekend '09
Saturday agenda-5k
After missing year, Jon & I made a triumphant return to the Jon Z MDA 5k, now the 5th annual. Since I do so many events, I forgot where it was, other than that it was on the west coast of Florida. By the grace of God, the results were similar as the last time-he won the race, I captured the master title. The difference was that there weren't any runners between Jon & I the last time. Still on the comeback from injury, I struggled to break 19. Plus, there was a lot more competition this time
Sunday agenda-5k
This was the only local race this weekend. Called dash at dawn 5k, it drew about 300 people despite having no age group awards. Much like the prediction run, only the top ten men & women would receive an award. Having learned from my mistake, this time I accepted the challenge, aware that I could leave with nothing. When the race began, it appeared as such. However, I had a strategy. I decided prior to the start that if it seemed hopeless by mile 2, I'll back off and jog the last mile. Fortunately, the field spread out & I felt good. I was blessed to beat half the field that could place & break 19 (barely) to boot!
Monday agenda-labor day
Although there was a race far away, I decided to mitigate damages & train (labor) at home. I did my famous vuelta de busway to Florida city.
FYI
So that I don't have field so many questions regarding my last relationship, the song 'don't be cruel' (by Bobby Brown, not Elvis) pretty much sums it up. With too much negativity, I'm like B.B. King, 'the thrill is gone'. Now, I am like Trina's hit, 'single again'. Majic 102.7 dwells in the past whereas I deal with the present and future, much like Jorge Mas Canosa, "adelante, adelante, adelante"!

Closure
Believe it or not, there's still no closure because he has not been buried yet.
Saturday agenda-king of the hill 5k
Although the 3rd annual, it was my 1st. Also, for them, the first time have a separate elite 5k. This event was especially challenging because it was held in a landfill park, the only way, besides bridges, to get hills here in south Florida. On top of that, it was a bit hot and very humid. I had many contenders for the master title. I got 2nd master to Mike T but both the 3rd place winner & I were ripped off by getting a medal instead of a trophy like the overall in our division. We got a lame excuse but the race ap mentioned 3 deep, not only the top. However, I am thankful the Lord allowed me to beat out 2 great contenders & break 19 again, a total surprise to me considering the conditions. I got positive & negative closure this day; the former was welcome to me because of an injury I sustained over a month ago. After the race, I had to attend a mandatory meeting regarding my job.
Sunday agenda-multirace du/tri
I opted out (rare) because:
1. I am not in any series.
2. did not get a relay partner.
3. don't like the exorbitant fee & would rather divert it to a half marathon.
Plus, I have to travel up there. Instead, I remained at home & did a training bike ride which went well. After that, home maintenance.
Honorable mention
* George wins division on both days (he is in series)
* Mike Korir got 3rd overall in elite division
* Ronnie Hollassie won overall in elite division (still friend despite being on a rival team)
* Surprise visit from Linda, who finished well

Weekend for redemption
Saturday agenda-5k
There were no local races scheduled this day but leave it to Jon to find one elsewhere. Since a walk division is rare, I already predetermined to use the JT for that purpose. He found 2 and chose to head down south for the conch pride 5k; this was a welcome invite. Although I struggled with both internal (due to injury) and external (heat & humidity) conditions, by the grace of God, I won my age division. Even though I got smoked by the master winner, I was elated that I finally broke 19 after a long drought; redemption. The post race party was average. This was my 2nd time ever winning a wood, not a medal.
Sunday agenda-back to school 5k
As stated previously, I elected to racewalk because just last week, I put all my eggs in one basket, tripped & broke them all; I left the race the same way I came-with nothing! I was way off my predicted time and this race was my chance to avenge the loss. Linda was involved in more ways than one, but at the very least, served an inspiration to move fast. In fact, because she did so well, I took me nearly 2 & a half miles to catch her; she made me work! Praise the Lord, I was able to redeem myself & win the overall title as a racewalker. By the way, the time was only 9 seconds off my predicted time of last week. This was a bang up job for an inaugural race, with a better than average post race party & trophies to all category winners. He even had a kiddie run. It was a pleasure to meet Jeffrey Tait's family, and as a child, he did well as a first time race director. Sure, some things needed to be worked out, but overall, well done.
Honorable mention
Congrats to Jon on winning the conch pride 5k & George his age group at the JT but I really applaud Linda, who volunteered her time to secure the awesome goody bags & toothpaste for some (I was unfortunate) that were distributed in the race. In fact, she was the only sponsor to have an entire line on the race Tshirt; way to go. She contributed as much if not more than those who were actually related to Jeffrey; kudos to my girl! Oh, on top of that, she had a great performance in the race. I still cant believe I couldn't catch her much sooner.

Mid month crisis (Aug)
Saturday agenda-ING kick off 5k
Since my slump still plagues me after the back injury, I was lucky this was a fun run. However, I still took it somewhat serious because the top 30 men (& women) would receive finisher's medals. I picked Jeffrey to pace with, also recovering from injury. We went out at a sub 6 minute pace, way faster than I had planned. I dropped pace but a little too much (30 secs). Although I accomplished my mission, I was disappointed with how I felt upon completion. Granted the weather wasn't great, the tightness & fatigue was bad.
Sunday agenda- trilogy #3
I still laugh at multirace for have a trilogy series with 4 events. However, due to bad circumstances, I am grateful. Our normal swimmer advised me in advance she would not be in town this month, so I was aware we'd have to operate on the minimum 3 with her. I was hoping to do one today as an insurance policy for the team's victory. Unfortunately for me, none of my reserve swimmers would come through. The one I understood the most had to entertain family coming from my home state. Another, like our runner, also were out of town. Even if I got a swimmer, most runners and cyclist had other plans. On short notice, the fee was exorbitant anyway, enough to even discourage me.
I woke up early prepared to race but that didn't happen. I decided to volunteer, and thus, give back to the community; many fellow athletes thanked me for doing that. Although, I have done this before, it was my first time volunteering from start to finish at a sprint tri.
Naturally, the Bell code does not permit me to escape without any exercise. As punishment for over a month of poor performance & failure to race today, I chose to do a long run during the worst period of the day (between 10-4). I began across from MAST academy around 11 am, ran through Bill Baggs state park & returned. The unknown distance & pace lasted nearly 2 hours. Due to the extreme heat & humidity, I was beat, much like running a marathon but I estimate it was only about 10 miles, if I ran at a 9 min pace. Sometime in the future, I'll have to measure it.
Honorable mention
* Top triathlete Eliot Mason & top duathlete Blain Reeves formed a du team that devastated the field.
* George wins again.
Saturday, August 08, 2009
Aw gust oh!
I did a rare weekday race, the Dreher park 5k on Thursday. I was moved to this strange date due to the cancellation of the original day of Saturday night due to extreme lightning. This posed a serious problem for me because I could not get time off. Worse, I had to stay overtime to help eliminate the rest of customer still in my office. I had to bend & break rules driving & by the grace of God, I made it there but only had 5 minutes to pick up my number, chip & get to the starting line. Thanks Laurie for holding my Tshirt. Since I was unable to prepare as usual, coupled with the extreme heat & humidity of the evening race, I struggled just to survive. With the Lord's help, I managed to place 3rd despite a dismal time. I was happy for that but disappointed that generic medals were distributed. Post race was 5 star for all who were not vegetarian; I deduct 2 stars.
Saturday agenda 5k
Actually, there were no local races but Jon W found one for us, allowing us to keep up our normal weekend schedule. I've never been to cape coral before so I was interested. Although a bit cooler, the poor training (due to the back injury), overwork (at the job) and lack of sleep (busy schedule) was reflected in an even worse performance. By the grace of God & the low attendance, I was able to win my age group and add another generic medal. I was worse than the aforementioned because it didn't say anything (no mention of race name or date) but running. Post race was similiar to Niketown, very basic.
Sunday agenda 5k
I decided to do a prediction run. Sadly, like the slump I'm in, I made a poor decision by putting all my eggs in one basket. Rather than run, I decided to racewalk. Under normal circumstances, I can better determine my pace doing that but did not calculate that I would have a bad day (heat, humidity & hills). I did not realize that the top ten would get trophies. If I had run (hind sight is 20/20), i would have placed. Since my time was off, I left the same way I came-with nothing. I shall not repeat the error again.

Key
Saturday agenda-publix series
George & I are in the duathlon series, while others are in the tri. The events were held at John Pennecamp park in key Largo. Although not my first time here (I did a 5k that was really 4 miles a few years back), it was my first time competing in a du. First, my condolences to the family & friends of Daniel, Linda's bro in law. She has been lamenting for weeks over it. He passed away at this location so I recommended that Linda do a relay with me & name the team after him. I could not guarantee I'd be in position when she returns (I am competing solo first) so she opted to go solo as well. Unbeknownst to me, she arranged to have some sort of ceremony to honor Danny; nice touch.
Meanwhile, George & I were on our quest to defend our titles. I was 2nd overall (I held back to conserve some strength) on the opening run, held top ten (slipped some positions) on the bike with some wind issues & won the final run split. I won my division & finished like I started. What was amazing is that George was already finished when I came through the finish line, despite the fact that he never passed me. Turns out he missed a loop on the final run & was DQ'd. The course was poorly laid out & this was an easy error to make. Hopefully, his series hopes were not dashed.
Sunday-Huntington tri
The event was named after the cause it supports-Huntington's disease. It was held in key Biscayne. Due to construction, it was moved to the MIT site of marine stadium. Like a blind date, I was matched with a pair of teammates I never met via Miami pace. Last time, I got very nice people but not fast. This time, they were also fast. I got to run the dreaded cross country course, 2 loops because they wanted to do the olympic distance, in the heat & humidity. I got to witness someone from the winning all male relay outrun Eliot Mason, something I had never seen happen. We got 2nd to that pro team but I was pleased we made it to make to the podium.

Who lee oh!
I kicked off the day (Saturday) with a group ride that began at Elite cycling. I rode with them to midway into Key Biscayne & Virginia key. When they decided to turn around at the foot of the east end of the Rick, I didn't & instead returned early because I had planned on racing in the evening & could not afford to burn myself out.
Saturday evening agenda-Hemingway days 5k
Put on by the southern most runners club down in key west, it was the only race Jon & I could find. Dejavu for us but a pleasant new addition was Linda. We all carpooled up there, survived the traffic & made it in time to sign up. I thought, at best, I may see one other person I may know; not! Running wild & GFLRRC came down, with Don W as their fastest rep (3rd overall). We met Chuck & his family, so Runners Depot was well represented. Jon was 2nd overall & yours truly, top in age group (lost a master title due to poor training as a result of the back injury). Andres, from Niketown, won the top title. Although the heat was held down by the clouds, the humidity and wind was strong & the course itself lousy (unpaved section & with various turns). The post race was great. Both Linda & Jon won something in the raffle; poor me. The post race refreshments was excellent, 5 star. The had pizza, beer & even chocolate covered key lime pie.
Sunday agenda
Rest. At least my version of that, since I only did a 1/2 mile on the treadmill as speed training due to the rain.

Du tri hard
Saturday morning agenda-Publix series
ESM offers both a triathlon (feature event) and a duathlon; naturally, I chose the latter. Today would be the season opener for both George & I. We come in as defending champions in our respective categories. I started off a bit tired & slightly rusty due to the back injury but did train throughout to maintain some level of fitness. My first run was great, as I was 2nd overall. I did the best I could on the bike but dropped two positions. I hung on in the final run without further loss to win in my category. Although Linda forewent the event, her services as a volunteer were greatly appreciated by all.
Saturday evening agenda-5k
Dubbed the Dreher park dash, it was the only 5k I could find for this weekend, so I anticipated high participation & was not disappointed regarding that. However, due to lightning, the race was first delayed then cancelled (postponed to a later, unspecified date); hard for us avid runners! Although this happened, I agree with that decision because it is still to be held but on another date and for the safety of all participants, not to mention avoid possible legal ramifications.
Sunday agenda-trilogy
This is race #2 of the series. Like ESM, it held both a triathlon (part of the trilogy series) and a duathlon (not). I chose the former as a relay team & my job was on the bike. The team-Du tri harder-return as defending champions. The name is based on my work ethic. I had to secure another runner because last year's selection was not available to compete. Due to construction on the bridge (not the Rick) leading to Crandon, the course was altered. Jenny performed as expected, coming out as the fastest female swimmer (only a male could beat her & that was by mere seconds). The runner struggled with the MIT run course, which is much like narrow cross country paths with rolling hills and failed to break 21; remarkably, that was the 3rd fastest time of 16 co-ed teams. The biggest shocker was with me, especially since the course was different & I had never raced through Virginia key. For the first time I can remember, I had the fastest bike split of all teams and built up enough of a cushion to absorb the dismal run. This is proof positive that all team mates must work hard for the ultimate goal of the victory. Although pleased, I consider ourselves luck to have dodged a bullet considering the runner up team lost due to poor transitioning. Last year, I lost 2nd master because of that at Riviera beach. In any case, we now lead in the series & must maintain this to win.
Du (on Sat) Tri (on Sun) Hard (to take) (missed 5k), got it?
Honorable mention
* Linda completes yet another triathlon, all by herself
* Linda reaches 15 races, perhaps surpassing any previous year already
* George wins his category at both events

Thank heaven
Saturday agenda-5k
I Thank heaven that Jon W found a race (2 actually) somewhere in Florida. Like a blind date, I had no idea what I'd be getting into. Near the last moment, I was told it was in Ormond, a place I have never been. After the fact, I discovered the details, such as the name of the race (race for the loop, the feature cause), time, age groups, course, etc. I Thank heaven I was able to do it, considering I am still recovering from a back injury and due to that, the reduced training lead to a poor performance. I Thank heaven because despite that, I still won the master title!
Sunday agenda-ride
I originally planned on the Frank Stark ride, but due to the distance to go there (boca) and my back injury, I opted to train at home. Although a quarter of the metric century, I still got a good workout. I closed out the weekend with my brother at Zo's summer groove.

4
Saturday agenda-j4 5k
Today, just about every city and/or county has some kinda race. Unfortunately, I had to chose one.
1. weston 5k (most attended race by me)
2. multirace du/tri (usually done as part of a series commitment)
I went by both proximity & the been there, done that rule. This was an inaugural by PR, held atTamiami park. first time doing a race there this millennium. I injured my back last Friday & it still bothered me enough to consider missing a race on independence for the 1st time ever! That thought hurt so bad (more than my back) that I rolled the dice, prayed & hoped for the best under possibly the worst. Although the heat & humidity was relentless, the Lord spared me with low wind. I was blessed, not only to be able to run with a terrible injury & make it in the low 19's but that the poor time was sufficient to win my age group;praise the Lord!
On advice of my dad & with the help of Linda, Sunday, I did something that occurs once in a blue moon-absolutely nothing! I did not race or train at all, in an effort to recover.
I had many blessings to count this independence weekend & I thank God & pretty 4 being a part of it. She is multi-talented & should open up a restaurant.
Honorable mention
* race #14 for Linda; an impressive feat as only a handful can claim a race a month for a year
* George wins age group in du (spared runners of defeat in the 5k's)

Tragic times
Saturday agenda-freedom 5k
This one was special because my dad returned to race again. I forgot to mention that I hurt my back going to work on Friday, & as of now, I still suffer from the pain, just one of the many tragedies I have to deal with. The Bell standard does not permit me to quit, so no doubt I ran as scheduled. The master title was impossible, as all 3 slots were filled by sub 18 performances. By the grace of God, I did win my age group eventually (initially, I was not listed & had to hunt down the race director to correct this tragedy). Even better, my dad got 2nd in his age group, bringing back memories of our family sweep.
Sunday agenda-ride
Initially, I had intended to do the Lauren Katzenstein celebration ride, metric century distance but that got altered due to my personal life situation. Luckily, I got back early enough to do my favorite ride to Florida city. Even though it was about half the distance originally planned, it still gave me a good workout and provided a slight bit of stress relief. Oh, yeah, there was more tragedy. I discovered I squandered good money by leaving out some formerly frozen food accidentally when I rushed out Friday morning to work. Plus, it started raining before I had a chance to cut the grass & I still have a flat tire to contend with. Lord, please ease up this week for me in regards to troubled times.
Honorable mention
* My dad places in age group.
* George wins the golden master title.

Dad day
Saturday agenda-run for the future 5k
I despise night races but left with the option of race or not, you know ill chose the former. It was hot & humid, as expected. I began feeling a bit tired & tight. Due to these conditions, I failed to make the top 3 but thankfully, the quality in attendance was low, allowing me to win my age group. I would've been top master if that title were offered. Oh, by the way, the age group sucked as it was 41-50, the most difficult (5 year) divisions combined! No big loss as all winners, including overall, got the same medal.
Sunday agenda-key Biscayne trilogy, round 1
The word trilogy indicates 3 but because of greed, a 'bonus' round was added. Anyway, the fastest female swimmer (Jenny) I ever had returned, along with yours truly, to defend our series title as co-ed champions. I selected a young, up and coming new comer to run; this would be his first relay. When the dust cleared, we won the co-ed title for this race on our quest to defend our series title. Both she & he posted the fastest time of all relay participants in their respective discipline. Although I set a personal best on the bike, I was 2nd to the team we beat. We were the only team to break an hour; what an accomplishment. Speaking of that, Linda made the top ten in the beauty pageant.. I mean her age group with a spectacular I run that I'd like to take some credit for. Well, she did the whole triathlon by herself! This was race #13 & her first tri of this year.
Honorable mention
*George wins the 5k & the du age group

Mid month madness
Saturday morning agenda-5k
I still don't know the name of the race but it commemorated 50 years of the incorporation of royal palm beach. Thanks to unclear instructions on the race flyer, Linda & I show up to the location for registration as directed but they (race organizers) neglected to mention this was not for race day. On top of that, my car mysteriously failed to start & we had to get a jump. Thanks to Linda's diligence, after many an incident, we finally arrived at our destination. From there, we had to be bussed to the start. We ran a poorly marked course with no mile markers, clocks or many cones. Later, I overheard that the course was designed to begin where the city began & end at its current location. In the last half mile, a kid & I followed arrows into a grassy field, only to be told to return to the road for the finish; we did more than a 5k, as indicative by my poor time. By the grace of God, I was runner up to teammate Jon Williams, the race winner. I was especially fortunate since, not only did I not have a stellar day, but the age groups were ridiculous. I was in the 18 & up age group.
Saturday afternoon agenda-NW track & field classic
Ever since introduced to it by Freddy, the NW track & field classic has been tradition for me. It serves as both competition (race) and training (track speed work). The events actually began on Friday but I can never make that due to work. I did the 800 meter dash then pleaded to move the 1500 meter to the next day due to the Runner's Depot party scheduled at night. I made it to the event with a significant other whom I refer to as she looks, pretty, & met up with many of my teammates.
Sunday morning agenda-5k
The intense training 5k was an inaugural. Unlike the previous day, this one had chip timing. When I began, I was barely in the dirty dozen but when the dust cleared, I got 2nd master, 5th overall. I was amazed to get trophies in both places. Despite bad weather, Linda & I ran and she did well in her age group.
Sunday evening agenda-5k
This was the final day to participate. When the dust cleared, I still could've gone through the school. They used a course that went through winding, small paths. I broke 19 barely and got 2nd master. I did the 3k and the 400 meter dash; the 1500 meter was missed while changeing. The latter I to run in the rain. Despite the rain & other complications, by nightfall, I had a Linda (pretty in English) good time.

who knee oh!
Saturday agenda-1 race, 1 village 5k
This was actually an inaugural and thanks to Linda, close to 'home'. In over 18 years, I have never done a race where this was held (by Pompano air park). Bad enough the race is at 8 am, but worse, I felt tired & tight and they had 10 year age categories. Much of the course was on a narrow path. By the grace of God, I survived the bad conditions. Unfortunately, I allowed someone to beat me for 3rd overall, but luckily, I had no affect on my podium position. Jon Williams won the race while Luiz Souza (2nd overall) took the master title. I fell to top of my age group. The post race refreshments were good & massage was available. The biggest highlight was the surprise appearance of Linda and that Jon & I won as a 2 person team. He continued on to place at the wharf 8k down in key west at night; I forewent that & decided to rest. Besides, it was raining a lot.
Sunday morning agenda-Kendra's kisses 5k
Also an inaugural, it mimicked the previous in that it was scheduled to start at 8 (yep, it was even later) and had 10 year age groups. The Lord came through when I really needed it. Although I lost the battle for 2nd, the top 3 got nice sized trophies. Unfortunately, there was no master title & everyone else got medals. Sadly, no Linda but fortunately I got into the low 18's. They had a decent post race refreshment, especially the Jamba juice.
Sunday evening agenda-twilight 5k
This race was memorable even though I did not sign up for it. I selected this one as a training run, especially since #1 my racewalk category was eliminated & #2 skimpy categories made it virtually impossible for me to place, even with a PR! I had the honor of running with my dad for 2 miles. I did the remaining with an old friend then anxiously waited for Linda. She chose to do well & 'hide' behind a group of army soldiers, so I missed her coming in. When the dust cleared, both did well. She got into double digits in terms of races since we met (10) with a good time, while my dad got 3rd in his age group, same as Jon W.
Honorable mention
* Jon W places in 4 events, 2=overall victories
* George wins age group in 5k & du
* John G won age group
* Louis M won age group

May I?
Saturday agenda-race for the bullet 5k
I usually race from bullets in my hood but that's the name of this race. I was actually amazed the race was not larger considering there were no other local races this weekend, particularly for us guys. I was fortunate, because I struggled a bit in the race, as indicated by barely breaking 19. It raining prior to the race, then got humid really fast. The course had no mile markers or clocks & since it was at Markham park, hills. By the grace of God, I still captured the master title. The post race was 5 star, with pancakes, sausage and, for the first time, eggs, in addition to the usual.
Sunday agenda
There were no local races except for 1 triathlon (she rox), and that was for women only. Means I had to train. I rode about 16 miles for cross training.
Honorable mention
* George wins again
* Jon W was 2nd overall with a sub 17
* Linda prepared a marvelous meal

Memorial weekend
Saturday agenda-tour of the gables 5k
Except for racewalking, I have never placed here. Like the Marlins, I am currently on a losing streak after a great start. My mid month crisis continued as I struggled with the heat, humidity & wind in the last mile, despite a great 1st mile. I left the race the same way I came in-with nothing. To top it off, they ran out of t-shirts. Although I got one, I gave it to Linda since she has never done this event before & I care so much about her. Speaking of her, she did her best time ever since beginning in march, when we officially hooked up. Jonathan placed top in his age group, since only overall was recognized.
Sunday agenda-?
Part of my mid month crisis has been the lack of races; this day was no exception.
Monday agenda-memorial day
Hats off to our troops. I found 3 races this day, with the furthest in Martin county. I narrowed it down to Boca or Weston. I thought about the former, since I never did it before but chose the latter because Linda liked that one. Don't get me wrong, I liked it too but I've been there umpteen times.
This holiday also served as a day of reckoning. I was aware that victory would not be easy, as this race always draws the most in quantity & quality. After that disappointing loss, I needed this one to redeem myself. Although I failed to beat Almir once again, I got down to where I left off prior to the slump- sub mid-eighteens. I captured the last master title & avoided the ceramics given out in lieu of the traditional medals. 5 star post race with the pancake breakfast.

Mid month crisis
Saturday agenda-fit 2 run 4 miler
To all the military, happy armed forces day.
I really don't like distances greater than a 5k but since I couldn't find one, if I wanted to race, I had to settle for this one. It featured a biased club challenge. Why? Because even though I entered the Goldcoast runners club, we we rent even mentioned. External conditions were bad-hot, humid, rolling hills, windy & curvy. Internal was bad too because I was tired. Competition was stiff & to my dismay, Jon brought another master in my age group. I got displaced & left the way I came-empty handed. Luckily, they were only giving out a stupid medal, so I didn't miss much. Meanwhile, Linda, despite having a lousy start of the day, did very well with her run. We went out to celebrate but much like our tough time at the race, we left the restaurant that way (sick to our stomachs)
Sunday agenda-rest
We had to recover from the previous day
My mid month crisis was the failure on Saturday (2nd of the year, 1st as an individual), getting sick after eating out and no training or race on Sunday. Hope to bounce back next week.

Mom '09
Saturday agenda-5k
Normally, I would have chosen the ALS race because, #1 it was closer to my home & #2 it was for a good cause (Alzheimer's) but, thanks to pretty, I made a change of plans and picked the run for the roses. I thought it was a great choice for Linda because of the following:
#1 proximity
#2 race catered to women (men had to wait 5 minutes then try to catch 'em if we can)
#3 couple competition-top 5 get special awards
I have done both of these races, usually not scheduled on the same day. Judging by her pace, I calculated that I'd catch Linda before the 1st mile. This would have come to fruition except for the fact that she decided on getting a PR for this year! Our team name was hand picked by her - Sweet pea & honey bee; awesome. We missed placing by 1 slot; there were 9 teams vying for a position. I am very proud of her. As far as myself, I had to battle for mid-master position. The winner was also a Runners depot teammate, Mike T. I was disappointed with the medal (I knew that was what was in store at the other race) but am glad it was not worse (I have gotten some funky prizes from this race director in the past). Not to berate the race director because it is nice that she doesn't always give out the same old thing, but once in while, they aren't what is hoped for. Although I must say she has done well lately (last year & current). I give a A for originally & creativity though. For those who like surprises &/or hate repetition, you will always be satisfied.

May I?
Saturday agenda-5k
This weekend was especially tough because I had to choose among a smorgasbord of events.
a. Sunsmart 5k (key Biscayne)
b. run to remember (Hollywood)
c. cardio 5k (Coconut Creek)
d. MS ride (Dade to Monroe county)
Normally, I would have chosen a. due to proximity but due to a wonderful, significant other, I made a change of plans. Racing will override fun runs & rides, eliminating d., including the next day. My next choice would have been b., the same race chosen by Jon & Jeffrey but by proximity rule, c. was closer to her place. This race was a disaster. They started almost a half hour late, misdirected the 2 race leaders to disqualification & I got out sprinted from behind by Almir, who, in an unsportsmanlike manner, gloated by raising & flailing his arms as he won. The awards ceremony was scheduled to be held after a cardio class. Problem was it took well over an hour, maybe 2. I had to leave without the cheesy medal, probably never to see it again.
Sunday agenda-5k
Well, since I missed the MS ride (Dade to Monroe county), forget about the return trip on this day. In protest to the unfair race changes, I did the race for the finish 5k instead of competing at the tri-miami, even though the du option was open. In fact, George skipped it as well. This 5k was way better organized. Although overall position & time was worse (better competition), the feeling I got from the race was better. I lost some time, in part, due to the course itself being with hills & turns. I got a nice paper weight for the age group victory. Post race was 4 star, losing 1 for not having a hot meal.

Spring break 09
Weekend agenda-race!
Saturday agenda featured the 7 mile bridge run, an event highly over-rated. The race organizer purposely make it difficult to impossible to get entry, raising the stock on an otherwise average event. No worry, I was certain I'd find something to race and I was right. In fact, I found a challenge with a total distance of 9.3 miles! A 15k challenge was the combined times of the 10k followed by a 5k.
1st agenda-10k
This would be my 1st straight 10k of the year! I was a bit nervous because 5k is my true niche but I reassured myself with the fact that I've been there, done that. The course was scenic in that it looped around a couple of lakes and challenging because it featured rolling hills, most of which rolled upwards. On top of that, the heat & humidity began to kick in halfway through. At that point, I was in the low 19's but the final tally revealed that I slowed down in the latter half. I fortunate to place 2nd but due to poor race management, anyone who chose the 15k challenged & placed, were inadvertently pulled from each individual race. They gave my trophy to someone who was 8 minutes slower than me! I had to wait to the end of the ceremony to get an equivalent that had an age group I am not in a hurry to get to-70- 74.
2nd agenda-5k
The 10k began at 7. I had to wait till 8:15 for the 5k start in order to complete the 15k challenge. I had so much time, I decided to use the bathroom & change wardrobe from Runner's Depot to UM attire; that heat had me sweating up a storm. Halfway through, I passed Linda, who unknowingly went off course due to poor signage. When the dust cleared, I finished 3rd overall but was given the master title after my insistance; that was the tallest trophy I received. I was also third overall in the 15k challenge. The one who was 2nd, beat me by about 2 minutes in the 10k, while I got him by about a minute in the 5k;he won by net time.
What I loved about the race was: #1 trophies, #2 offered the 15k challenge.
What I did not like: race director felt that each person should only get 1 trophy, even though I called in advance to verify the protocol and that there were 2 separate races. the 15k challenge was the combined time of the 2; a true 15k is from start to finish, no waiting.
Sunday agenda-vacation
I followed Linda's lead by travelling so far so she could meet & be with her friend over the weekend. This compelled me to forfeit racing on this day, & worse, all training. However, I won't complain because I probably needed the rest (nagging injury in right ankle/foot) and did have some fun. I would have done a 5k, either Rooney or Daniela, both events for a cause, but there will be others. Most don't realize that, while I may take a vacation from work, I do not in regards to fitness. It is treated like eat or sleep, it is daily!
Honorable mention
Linda completes seemingly a half marathon, even though registered in the 10k. How did this happen? Her pace caused her to intertwine between the two events. All participants had the same bib number (no differentiation between 5k or 10k (15k had arm bands)). The signage would was say race and show an arrow, but not which race. They had to change many signs for the 5k course & she was misdirected, causing her to run for a longer distance. She didn't give & did finish; for that, I am proud of her.

Topsy turvey
Saturday agenda-stampede in the park
This race serves as a membership drive & was intended as a tune up for a main event; the former was consistent. Generally, this race is not that competitive but since there were no other races in broward, it attracted some of the best. Although the number in attendance was low, the level of competitiveness was high. Some of the best masters showed up, forcing me to have to run! With the likes of Walthon, Ralph G (strider), Humberto, Almir (premier) and Jeff P, I had to bring my A game. It was windy & the course was changed to include trails. Despite that, I was able to keep pace with Almir, but I lost in the .1 by .1. Yes, we finished with the same time but he edged me out. He truly earned the distinction of 2nd overall because once completed, he was laid out on the ground for 5 minutes;he spent everything for the title. I made him work hard for the honor; i was not generous. Our battle pulled me to my best time in years & we both were just 2 seconds from breaking 18!
Sunday agenda-triathlon
Despite the all or nothing concept for relays, I intended to compete using 2 new athletes. The runner was new to the business (multi-sport) but shows promise. The swimmer was experienced, but due to internal conditions (& possibly external (rip currents), she chose not to compete. Without a swimmer, I was compelled to fore go the event all together and merely train. I chose to cycle 14 miles because my role was to be on the bike.

Taxing
The high notes were doing the Niketown training run with fellow runners at a very easy pace with some of the fastest in field, (Jon, Jonathan, Jeffrey) and renewed communication with my love. Now tonight, I must do my best in a rare mid-week night race. Not my favorite but I must be prepared for anything, even for a taxing experience!
My honorable mention goes to Asha, who actually remembered it was my birthday.

Easter 09
Saturday agenda-bull run
This event offered both a 5k & a 10k. The latter was a USATF championship race for active members. The former had poor signage, and even though Bob called out 5k turn around, he did not indicate where. Therefore, I ran more than a 5k. Luckily, I did not lose my age group position, only the overall position. The master title was won with a 17, well out of my range. Having done this last year, I chose this event over 2 others because I 'knew' we were gonna get trophies. Boy was I wrong! Except for the overall winner, all age groupers who placed got a general issue drinking glass. Post race qualified as 5 star, lots to eat, including a pancake breakfast.
Sunday agenda-Easter
Sadly, no race to be found. Instead, I did a training ride of about 17 miles from Pompano to Boca and back. I declared this a cross training day & did not run.
Honorable mention
* Thanks to Linda for hospitality
* teammate Jon W wins age group
* Linda takes on the 10k
* George wins again
* Lisa D got her age group
