Death of 2006

Well, the title maybe a little strong, but in essence, it's true. Since we're on the eve of a new year, the old one will be gone (dead). This year, I've had many ups & downs, but fortunately, more positive than negative experiences resulted with the help of the Lord. As one of my gospel favorites says, "I won't complain".

Saturday agenda-the last long run (of the year)

I completed 14 miles, 7 out & over the bridge, used the port-a-potty, & then returned to base. I was a good part of the Bikila bunch at the end.

Sunday morning agenda-the last ride (of the year)

I pulled out my rarely used recumbent bike & completed approximately 16 miles. That bike was instrumental during a severe injury incurred a year ago that caused me to forfeit my entry in the Jacksonville half.

Sunday afternoon agenda-footworks fun run

This became my last event (of the year). This was a poorly advertised fun run (only 1 sign in store window that many employees were unaware of). I was running (not literally) late because of unexpected traffic, including an accident. I met up with whom I deem 2006's most improved runner, Jonathan Mederos. 2 guys started off the small group (2 females, JM & myself joined the 'leaders'. The course- run from footworks up Sunset Dr to the bridge (at coco plum circle). Jonathan & I did not like the path, so we decided to go to old cutler road toward our normal path to Niketown. We were surprised that someone was still with us. JM didn't want his legs to lock up so we did a fartlek but nearly lost our follower, so we decided not to do that again until comfortable that he could find his way back. Meanwhile, I inadvertently left my water in the car so I had to get some hydration elsewhere. Luckily, JM knew a park was nearby & we stopped there & got another surprise; we bumped to Christopher finishing up his training run. After a brief chat, we continued & once on the (Nike) path, we picked up the pace, leaving the follower behind. In the last 100 meters, I picked up to near race pace to accommodate the accommodater. He was going at a snail's pace to stay with us so I wanted to close the fun run more in tune with his pace, even though it still was slow in comparison to what he can do. What was supposed to be an easy 3 mile fun run was more like a mini long run (7.43 miles) at an average pace (7:38) faster than I planned. We still broke an hour, even with the stop.

I thank the Lord for the experiences & now in the immortal words of Jorge Mas Canosa, "adelante, adelante, adelante!"; let's move on!

Merry Christmas!

'Tis the season to be jolly! I found out about only 1 race but opted against it due to its proximity & chose to train instead. Before I continue, I'd like to wish all readers a very merry Christmas & remind you to always remember the reason for the season- Jesus Christ, our lord & savior. I may get some gifts but the ultimate was given by our father up in heaven, for he gave us his only begotten son to save our souls. Thank you.

This training weekend, I got stood up so I had to train solo. Fortunately, I am not motivated by having a partner(s), but rather by within.

Saturday-long run

I ran 14 miles, including the Rickenbacker causeway & met a few friends along the way. This satisfied my marathon preparation requirement.

Sunday-long ride

I cycled approximately 30 miles, including the Rickenbacker causeway & saw a few friends as well. This satisfied my crosstraining requirement.

Monday-Merry Christmas!

I'll find some way to train. Use your God given gifts.

Winding down

Well, I'm winding down the year with my final marathon of 2006. With only 2 two events that I know of left, I decided to hang up my running shoes, in regards to racing, until the new year. Next week, Saturday, I'd have to travel to west coast Fl to run 5 miles;i'll save the gas & train here. On new years eve, there's a fun run I usually volunteer for but since the time & location has changed, I'll probably opt out & rest for the race to start off the new year.

Thurday agenda-Nike run hit remix

This event was to me like an NFL game- an unusual night & time. Also, this was a five mile fun run & I treated it as such. I did it as a training/tune up run for races upcoming. I could not afford to injure myself running on the boardway & in the soft sand in an event where I could not even place (no awards except for overall winners) when I know I have a marathon to run. Remarkably, I still broke an hour just messin' around. There was plenty to eat afterwards & plenty of music prior to the downpour. Yeah, I got caught in rain but not during the 'run'.

Main event-Jacksonville marathon

I did it on a dare but the darer didnt show! However, Josh did not disappoint. He not only showed but showed up. We both finished in good time (under 4 hours). It started off cool but got hot quick but I feel better prepared for the new year now that I've done some long events;with frequent racing, I have not been able to do long runs. Since a race will override a training run, I have to get it done through racing, hence Weston & Jax. The ammenities were disappointing & depleted quickly; past 4 hours, you'll thirst & starve! 2 years ago, when I was injured & forfeited my half injury, they had a coolmax long sleeve shirt. This year, they regressed to cotton. The course was flat but also boring, much like disney's access roads. Despite that, I'd consider doing it again, providing I don't go alone;the flight was long enough but imagine the drive.

Night & day

Title was chosen based on the stereotype that night is bad and day is good & applies to my experiences this weekend. Please remember that this blog is my online diary & showcases my experiences enlaced with facts.

Saturday agenda-holiday 5k (night)

Put on by an amateur timing company(night)- accuchiptimingusa, this race is considered minor league(night) by my standards because they could not reach the century mark in regards to participants/finishers, & they only held one event, the 5k. Inaccurate timing as prelimanary results showed under 12 minutes for overall winner & the runner didn't hit pubity yet(night). Worse, I won the master title but it was given to a friend ((night)actually grand master champion) of the race/timing director, alan harding & I had to settle for the consolation prize of second. Since no prize money was involved, it was unjustifiable to alter the divisions, plus insinuates that some divisions are better than others; other than overall(best) or age group (when fail to get in upper divisions or overall), this is not the case. I was the lucky one, still in a top category (master, grandmaster & Sr grandmaster). This bone-headed move was evidence of favoritism & inexperience & 3 people were bumped out of their rightful positions in that vindictive action(night); they, like I, have legitimate gripes. The race had the worse amenities(night) -only coffee (I don't drink) & bagels (I don't eat), which is much less than offered at the Niketown training runs! It has also the worst course(night), 3 loops on a trail/parking lot & full of twists & turns, so bad, teammate JM (winner of one of their races & of the Palmetto bay 5k today) refuses to ever do it again. Also, no raffles(night) but I am kinda glad they didn't because I know that would have been rigged too. I almost forgot, the only gave out medals(night).

Sunday agenda-rotary holiday run & family festival (day)

This event featured two races(day), a 5k & a half marathon & was timed by a professional (20 years) timing company(day)- splitsecondtiming. This was a major league event(day) that drew over a thousand participants, with many high profile athletes. I was legitimately second overall master winner(day) because the guy that beat me was 44 & faster! Just to be certain, I went ahead & beat the same guy who was favored yesterday(day).

I chose this event over one much closer to home because of positive experiences in the past (7 years). This one has among the best amenities because they also had a pancake breakfast that was still there after 2 1/2 hours! Plus, it was an out & back course(day) & they even had an honest raffle(day);if you weren't there, you could not win. Most important is that they gave out beautiful trophies (age group) & plaques (upper divisions), definitely day.

For those who like facts, check it out online! However, to assist I have listed many below:

po-dunk event (night) vs professional (day)

* 93 finishers in only 1 race vs 595 in the 5k alone, over 6 times more!
* event held with no major competition couldn't reach the century mark vs 9th annual event runs against event held by miami marathon company that still drew over 2 times the former in the 5k, 4 times if 15k included!
* finishers not in proper categories by age vs normal, correct method.
* top 3 in 10 year age groups vs top 3 in 5 year age groups.
* barely any ammenities vs top class with plenty to eat & drink.
* chip company timed less events in 2 years than the number of events I have done in the first 4 months of this year alone vs chip company with 5 more years experience timing than my entire sports career.
* 3 loops within a small park vs out & back 13.1 mile course within a posh neighborhood with police protection.
* a handful of diehards vs that plus an elite field of well known runners.
* of events held in broward this weekend, the least people vs the most.

Honorable mention

Teammates Jonathan wins Palmetto bay 5k, Chris C. ran Weston half in under 1:40. Bikila's Octavio & Vicky place in half.

My condolences

I apologize on behalf of the victims of the horrible decisions by Mr harding to punish me. Fortunately, I still placed in an upper division but below are the names of those stripped completely of their rightful positions in the upper categories:

Montes Ismael was forced from 3rd master to age group
Bela Kovacs was forced from 2nd grand master to top age group
Ira Markowitz was forced from 3rd grand master to 2nd age group
George McCuen was forced from TOP Sr. grandmaster to 2nd grandmaster; although still in upper division, the position is not as glamourous.

Pathetic

I traveled to the Palm beaches to race, only to discover that those in charge of the marathon of the Palm beaches events have some pathetic views regarding running. They admitted that they did not care about the 5k, as evidenced by only awarding top 3 overall male & female & nothing but finisher medals to all the peasants to paid for the top dog's prizes & the profits of the staff. They stated their main focus was on the half & full marathon. Note that PR racing originated the idea of both & also, respects all the participants. Yes, I was a victim, being 7th overall & 1st master (if it were offered) but yet received no honor or respect. My dad protest races that disrespects participants & rightly skipped this entire weekend; he knew something I didn't. Although not stated as such, neither online nor in print, it was apparently a fun run, unless you are an elite runner. All of us suckers didn't find out directly, but rather through the grapevine. We kept asking, "when are you gonna start the awards ceremony?" and were told that the announcement of the overall winners was all we were gonna get for our hard earned money. This 5k is now a must-don't!

The main event-marathon of the Palm beaches marathon (relay)

This year, my duties as team captain/coach were tested. I was not able to get my fastest teammate from last year's 5k 5 person team. Worse, Caroline, top 3 female finisher of last year, and my dad (not a team member but was scheduled to race) couldn't make it due to personal reasons, so in regards to the team, I had to find a substitute.

I acquired long time friend & most famous running nutritionist, Lisa Dorfman, as a teammate. Chris Choing was joined me again & is the only member to team with me in all three marathon of the Palm beaches team events! Lisa found an excellent replacement, someone I didn't recall by name but I trusted her judgement & she didn't let me down; Steve Brookner performed admirably. Our combined efforts earned us second spot in the mixed category, since the race director invited Bill Rodgers not only to be a guest but also paid him & his teammates to compete & win the co-ed division. We equalled our team name- All 4 run -& managed to beat 23 other teams in the category. The day was a bit dampened by the fact that no awards were given out, other than for overall & to friends;I should've seen that comin'. Nonetheless, we did our best & had lots of fun in the process.

The only positive, besides the obvious (team victory), were receiving medals for finishing. Those medals, however, pale in comparison to Miami's.

Thanxgiving weekend

Hope everyone had a wonderful thanksgiving. We runners are a different breed because we will exercise early prior to any pig out! Whenever there is race, I am pleased. I am thankful the Lord allowed the long weekend to be possible & that there were sufficient races to run. I am especially thankful the Lord allowed me to do well in both, despite circumstances.

Thanksgiving day agenda-Blue cross & blue shield turkey trot

This race offered 2 events- 5k & 10k. For those only racing once this holiday weekend, the 10k is the obvious choice; Y'all know I race more frequently. Besides, I perform better in the 5k, so that was my selection. All seemed well until halfway into the 1st mile. Some short kid kept sprinting & then cutting in front. I finally ditched him after mile one. My troubles weren't over. Some one wanted to beat me so bad that as he was passing, he (elbows/feet) were bumping into me, forcing me to counter like a basketball player. Well, he succeeded using that unsportsmanlike technique but did not realize what he stepped into. In essence, he opened the Pandora box. Tapping into my past experience, I deduced that #1, if he felt it necessary to do that, he must be in my age group & #2, he confirmed it when I saw the bald spot as he cut me off. In fact, I dubbed his move as the Kojak kutoff. The Kojak kutoff was the catalyst for my karma plan. I decided to allow him the short term victory of being in front & I used his Kojak kutoff against him by drafting. I followed his every move, meanwhile adjusting to whatever pace he used until I felt the time was right. Once I got on the track (after 3 miles), twas basically a 400 meter dash. I reminded myself of how well I did the last time I was on a track (Bikila track meet). I outsprinted him and placed 1st in age group by 1 second! I'll give him credit for apologizing in the chip area regarding the Kojak kutoff but it was short lived. Out of revenge, he stole my UM sweater as I went for my award. Although I can't be proven, the evidence I have it that he failed to pick up his award because he was too busy taking the sweater. I feel it was worth the sacrifice to teach him a lesson not to execute nasty maneuvers.

Black Friday agenda-bargain hunting

I squeezed out a mini-workout then off I went. I didn't get up early enough to beat the happy campers so I missed out on some deals. I was not willing to be out at midnight to save a few bucks. I worked out a little more after the dust cleared.

Saturday agenda-Jingle down Main Street 5k

This is one of my favorite races. Ever since doing it the first time, I have made it a point to make this race. It is one of many return races that I do. This race required patience & experience. I was passed by 2 known master runner before mile 1 but was on pace. Therefore, I had to rely on my ability to overcome, especially in the final mile. After mile 2, I managed to close the gap & then called upon the Lord to give me the power & speed in the sprint zone to capture the master title. The Lord came through, once again. The other two I beat are both friends & representatives of a rival running store. I was 4 seconds slower but it was enough to get the job done.

Sunday agenda-Nike run remix training

Originally, I was to form a 2 or 4 person relay team but a number of factors prevented it- insufficient time to set up, distance, thanksgiving weekend & prior commitments. So, I decided to travel somewhere to run. I chose this because it will be the 1st & last time I could do one of these on any given weekend prior to the actual event. I was able to complete 5 miles with about 75% of runners well known by me, including one that I beat on Saturday for title. The post race refreshments were not as good as at niketown but I still enjoyed it. I lost (didn't win) in the raffle. I want an Ipod so that I can use the nike plus system, otherwise, I don't really need an MP3 player.

Keep a runnin'!

Cool running

Title refers to the great starting temperature for both races, and also in reference to the race results.

Saturday agenda-Delray beach turkey trot 5k

This was my first time doing this one, so all was up in the air. I found out about it barely a week in advance since no race aps were available. Fortunately, this race (as was the next) was chip timed by split second timing, & therefore, was available online. I ran as fast as I could only to find out that no master title was offered, consequently I fell to 1st in age group. I will accept that consolation knowing I was 5th overall. Amenities were good but only 1 bathroom stall. Good out & back course with only 1 turn around.

Sunday agenda-Wilton Manors 5k

Weather was even better (I wore tights & sleeves) but I was not (onset of illness due to weather change). Two of my best friends made a surprise visit. Lisa Dorfman easily won the female master category & her son won the entire race. I, on the other hand, had some difficulty. Through the grace of God, this race offered top 3 masters & grandmasters as well as overall. This pulled out the 50+ year old who was 6th overall. Top 3 overall were teenagers, so that did not assist me. I edged out a master competitor near the end of the last mile to capture the master title & finished 7th overall. This one was surprisingly good. Excellent in amenities, had many port-a-potties & even a raffle. I liked the announcer they picked. He seemed to love his job & having fun. He said things like "we have thousands of people here" (only 231 finished), "welcome to the historic Wilton manor 5k" even though this was the 2nd annual event (the delray was its 2oth) & "we have the best runners in the world" but the winning time was in the low 17's.

Honorable mention

After this event, I went to multirace's South Florida triathlon series awards ceremony picnic. Here, Triple Teem was officially recognized as the 2006 co-ed relay champions. Yes, repeat champions. Unfortunately for my teammates, they didn't have their plaques. The runner JM didn't show, so no big deal but the swimmer EW did. It was a big disappointment for her & felt like a waste of time but as consolation, she will get to pick the picture for her plaque.

Happy thanksgiving!

V

V stands for veteran's day & victory. First, we must pay homage to those who have served & those currently serving our great nation because 'freedom aint free'.

I have been under the weather the past 2 weeks but now on the tail end of it. Obviously, my training was cut back so I was not as confident about this weekend but always feel the Lord above will find a way for me. Indeed, he did. Although I did not perform as well as I would like or am capable of (under normal conditions), considering I placed, I do not have the right to complain. As one of my favorite gospel songs says, "I won't complain".

Saturday morning agenda-Key Biscayne lighthouse 5k run

Weather was quite good at start but started warming quickly. Internal conditions were acceptable (still some back/neck pain), external was not (got hot quick). Despite some struggle, I still won my age group. I count not win the master division because it wasn't offered. I was 10th overall, 7 positions behind teammate Jonathan.

Saturday evening agenda-Fantasy of lights 5k

Top rated main event race. This one drew the best runners. In fact, over 1100 completed this event! External conditions were acceptable (low humidity, night cool air), internal was not (back/neck increased & tightness from previous race, possibly from resting in my car 2+ hours waiting for race). To get an idea of the caliber of this race, note the following:
1. winning time was 14 & change
2. Mike (kenyan) was beaten & finished second!
3. top female (Sonia) was 4th overall with 16 & change!
4. Even with top 5 masters, I missed that category even though I broke 19 minutes. Slowest time was 18:35.
5. In my age division, top 3 were under 19. I edged out 2nd by 2 secs, 3rd by 3 secs!

I managed to win my age group despite struggling. I believe my .1 sprint was the answer to my dilemma. I was 21st overall & beat all women except that elite one.

Sunday agenda-Miami man triathlon (International)

This race was a testament to my #1 crosstraining activity-cycling. This was the final race of the multi race season & also of the S. Fl. tri series. The team- Triple Teem - entered leading the series & poised to win. We could win just by merely completing the race but the team I have strives for excellence, much like me. Since the original cyclist quit, I assumed his role for the last time this year. My normal swimmer (EW) celebrates her birthday this weekend, asked if she could bow out & the team captain (yours truly) granted her wish. She deserves the vacation because she is my MVP teammate, having lasted 2 seasons with me, the longest of any teammate! I asked the reliable runner who can swim but she preferred not to do it if I can find someone else. The duathon champion cyclist Jollie stepped up to the plate. I was not confident with her swimming but she proved me wrong in a race before & I dared her to do that again. She did. Although she swam well, we (the team) were in the hole by a little over 7 minutes because that team leading after the swim had a former collegiate champion swimmer. Because I set personal best on bike, we managed to keep the deficit because I matched their cyclist, losing only 14 seconds;I possibly lost 15 seconds when my shoe failed to unclip, causing me to fall at the dismount zone. In fact, I was so fast, my teammate was not at his post! He was surprised, as well as I, that I was there already but luckily, he was nearby. Once Jonathan (substituting my favorite position) took over, that was all she wrote. He easily made up that difference and then some! I was hoping not to increase the deficit & my prayers were answered. Our Co-ed team placed 1st, beating ALL relays, plus we were 25th overall.

Kudos to Jonathan Mederos. 2nd overall in morning 5k plus top runner in the Miami man tri. Also, thanx to Jollie for excelling in secondary event, like yours truly.

NYC

Title is in regards to the New York City marathon but actually stands for No Young (spring) Chicken. The nyrrc holds a lottery that I believe is actually biased (based on those actually selected & the fact that the percentage of African-Americans getting selected the first time applying is slim to none, confirmed by an ignored email I sent requesting the data) & not truly random. Their system is a big revenue maker because of the following: (1). you must pay a non-refundable lottery fee. If not picked three times in a row, then you get a guaranteed entry. This amounts to about a quick $30, in addition to the entry fee. (2). If for some reason you can't make it, you may defer to next year only the opportunity to run, not the entry fee, so in essence, you'd pay over double. They don't allow transfers to another person who could run. (3). unfair method of entry. why? the qualifying time for the nyc is much more difficult than the prestigious Boston marathon, plus the lottery is as the race director pleases because the only way to avoid the former reasons is to be a celebrity or have 'mucho dinero' (pay $2500 & up to get in through a charity). Well, needless to say, I am the victim, otherwise referred to as a sore loser (from NY) that didn't get picked, but fortunately, my dad did in the second round (more fair). Come to think of it, maybe I was not selected because I am considered a defector. I was born in New York but live in Miami. Anyway, my dad does not do marathons without me so he was considering forfeiting this year & going next year when I would've fulfilled the 3 rejection rule. I didn't want this to happen, as explained earlier. I told him that I go up there to support him, one way or another. I went to several sources, including the horse's mouth (director hung up on me while pleading my case), to try to get an official entry, but no one came through, despite explaining the circumstances. Fast forward to race day (Nov 5th). We both wanted to complete the nyc marathon & it came to pass. My dad was an official finisher & his results can be verified online. He said he couldn't have done it without me but I feel the opposite. Bottom line, we needed each other. This was his debut to the 2006-07 running season but his 5th marathon this year alone, tying a record I set for myself last year! Can we be sure he is No Young Chicken? Well, he's certainly not chicken, since it takes a bold man to do what he does, especially at his age.

Do or die

The title refers to my weekend experience. I had not fully recovered from illness but yet trained normally throughout the week. I normally scale down my workouts but due to the great weather, I ignored my usual protocol;this proved to be a grave mistake.

Saturday agenda-beat the heat duathlon

The deck was stacked against me. I was not at my best, & worse, I couldn't sleep with the loud music being played my someone a block south celebrating somebody's birthday the night before. People like to ask me how am I going to do prior to a race. This is when conditions come to play. Both the internal (sickness) and external (wind, rain) were antagonists. It was very windy all day & will affect a non-avid cyclist, like me, greatly. As soon as a race official said go, it began to drizzle. First run leg, I was in 7th place but by the transition, the signs of illness began. Midway through the bike leg, I felt dizzy, tired & nausea & wisely stopped to recover somewhat. After approximately a 2 minute delay, I finished that leg then struggled to complete the final run. I was in so much pain, I felt like I was going to die but yet had the desire to do (finish). I started by walking (1st time ever for me) then picked up the pace slowly;I actually passed somebody before finishing the event. I wanted to at least salvage the event since I do not like not finishing what I started. Despite all that, I managed to be the 2nd 40-44 person, who did not place in the top 3 overall, to win. However, since the race directors allow double dipping, I am classified as 3rd &, unfortunatly, my plaque states that too. Can you believe the one who won the race was in my age group? Just my luck.

Sunday agenda-Homestead speedway century ride

Not a race, but still a challenge. I met up Caroline, sole female of the 5k 5 person team that won last year at Palm Beach 5k & member of the 4 person marathon co-ed relay of this year's marathon of the Palm Beaches do to the metric century (62 miles) ride. Also, cyclist of Du Tri Harder (JJ) was there with a cycling buddy; they elected to do the full century (100 miles). We all started & rode together for about 5 miles before those two felt the need for speed. After all that happened to me & the fact that this was not a race, after we crossed US 1, I wished them good luck & stuck to my original plan. We (CM & I) rode, more or less, together to 1st rest stop, where remarkably, I saw JJ. She took off again with partner while I wound up being a windbreaker (lead cyclist while others draft) for caroline & others. When it came time to switch, no one stepped up as promised. On the way to 2nd rest stop, JJ's partner was on the side fixing a flat but she wasnt there. When we reached the stop, I saw her again. She hung out there for him but before I left, I challenged her to catch me before the next stop. On the way, I saw her friend heading toward the stop I just left. Amazingly, I got to the final rest stop without being passed by my teammate. CM & I discovered we already finished 62 miles but yet had not completed the event;it seems the course was not measured correctly. We completed the ride, even though it was 5-6 miles longer, by about mid day. Yall know I was gonna do this despite what happened the prior day;I am crazy like that. Oh, by the way, those two who were gun-ho on the full century wised up & did what we did;you could say they wimped out. We (CM & I) were behind them most of the way but finished in front of them, despite their speed. I knew from the get go that i'd be challenged plenty with those high winds in effect. Had it been a calm & cool day, another 40 miles wouldn't faze me.

Second to one

This weekend featured individual & team competition.

Saturday agenda-steps to independence 5k

I was aware of two races going on. Normally, I would select a race by proximity, which would lead me to select the Komen race for the cure 5k held in downtown Miami. I did it last year & enjoyed it. It is a charity race & the great cause-cure/prevention of breast cancer. I classify this race as a no pressure race since, other than overall, there were no age group categories. Instead, the top 50 males & females were rewarded with a finisher's medal. In such a case, due to my frequent running, I would've slacked, knowing that a 21 would be sufficient to qualify. In order to force myself to compete, I went to Coral Springs to do the independence 5k. In this one, top 3 overall & masters were offered, then the normal 3 deep age groups. I wanted a challenge & I got it. Before the start, I felt comfortable that I could place as a master but by mile one, I was praying I could make at least the age group category. It seemed I was anywhere from 12th to 15th place & 4 known master runners were included! Between 1 and 2, I was last in a master's pack of 3 but by mile two, Gary Bloome overtook us all. DK (teammate of premier) attempted to match his pace while I kept mine till mile 2. Oh, I almost forgot, I was also being challenged by a teenage girl; you know how I feel about that. I thought to myself, "I own the last mile!". Once I passed that mile marker, I picked up the pace, passing both WM & DK while losing the girl. I closed within 7 seconds of Gary but ran out of real estate. I had to settle for 2nd in master's category (second to one). I was in danger as the final winner was only 6 seconds behind me. Oh, my overall position was fifth. I was the 3rd fastest master (one master was so quick, he made 3rd overall) to finish, proving that age is just a number.

Sunday agenda-multirace triathlon (relay)

Waking up still on a high from yesterday, I was excited about today. I, once again, will be tested on my ability, but this time on a bike, my number one cross training activity. Stef, the swimmer, would be competing for the last time this year with Triple Teem relay. She had survived dealing with me for two seasons & has competed with me more than any other teammate I have ever had. What a milestone! The one taking my place on the anchor leg (run) was none other than Jonathan Mederos, winner of 2 running races in the past 2 months & member of Du Tri Harder 2006 duathlon relay champions for the last 2 events. Although we started about a minute behind (a co-ed relay team had a male swimmer that beat our woman), I amazing took out their female cyclist (not taking anything from her since you know we (Du Tri Harder) have a strong female cyclist)) in the first loop, despite the fact that I am not really a cyclist. Note to other teams- with this combination, if I pass you on the bike, you will meet certain doom! Twas time for the anchor to show out. When the dust cleared, we placed first in the co-ed division. His run time was faster than anyone, even the elite finishers (granted, they had 2 disciplines prior). My bike time among all relays was short of being the best by about 33 seconds (second to one), & I set a personal best for that course. As a team, we beat all but an all male relay (second to one), but we were behind by a mere 55 seconds, a deficit that was due to a male swimmer vs our woman. Congratulations to all my fellow teammates.

Honorable mention

I realize I will always be second to one, since God is number one! Thanx for everything.

Ups & downs

This weekend featured a series of ups and downs.

Saturday agenda-AVDA 5k

This was held in Delray beach so this was quite a trip for me (down). This was a charity race & its purpose is Aid to Victims of Domestic Abuse (Inc). I decided to this one as a tune-up race for the main event (Sunday agenda) so I originally planned to run comfortably & possibly win the master's title. A teammate (DK) asked that we run a 6 minute pace for 2 miles then after that, do whatever I want. My goal is always to break 19, but if I am feeling good & conditions are right, I can go to low to mid 19. I followed the script (mile 1=6:02 & 2=12:05), more or less. The person who ultimately won the race was pacing with me for the 2 miles before he took off. While we were striding together, we passed a pack of 3 young kids. I tried to match his pace but my efforts were futile (down). I then realized I better pace myself to defend the 3rd overall position (Up)! I staved off an attack from a teenager & pulled off the victory; I placed better than planned (up). Unfortunately, they gave out medals (down) instead of trophies. However, they gave out a gift certificate as well (up), rare in most events.

Sunday agenda-Escape to Miami triathlon

The big hype of this event is escape island. Swimmers are ferried to this island then they escape to Miami by swimming back to Margaret pace park. Since I am aquatically challenged (down), another runner (NU) who was able to swim, accepted the task as a favor (up). I went with her up to the ferry but only she could board. Even though she says she is not a good swimmer & does not really like doing it, she completed the swim in the choppy waters, then the cyclist took over. She struggled with internal (injury & lack of sleep) and external (high winds & bridges) conditions and did not perform as fast as usual (down), she stated. As a co-ed relay team, we were considered weak because we had two females; a stronger team only has one. Based on the 3rd place team's times, I began in the hole 22:04 (down). As I told the swimmer, at a nine minute pace (8:57) , the runner would be at approximately the 2.5 mile point of the 10k before I even get to start, an insurmountable lead (down). Remarkably, that team was in danger of losing as my pace (6:47) cut the deficit to only 6 seconds (up), despite taking my first fall as a runner (tripped on something on the way down the bridge(down)) this year! Although we missed placing by 7 seconds (down), we shattered the time set by last year's team (up) by over 40 minutes (up). Much like the Miami Dolphins game this weekend, we mounted an incredible comeback (up) & had a chance to win, but however, ultimately came up short (down). Unlike the Dolphins, we still have a winning record in terms of placing in events. Even though individually, I did well (beat my time of last year by about 5 minutes), like Ricky Williams said after a game he set a Dolphin's team record in rushing, "I did well but apparently not enough because we (the team) did not win".

Turnabout's fair play

This weekend was the Publix family fitness weekend championship. It was held at Florida's oldest amusement park, Cypress Gardens in Winter Park. All of those in series contention had to show up here in order to place in their respective categories. This explains my absence from a race I was eagerly waiting to do- the bikila 5 miler. Many participated here who were not in the series because amenities included park admission. Once in, you can go on any ride. Also, the post race festivities were nice.

Individual agenda - Duathlon:
I have competed in the publix du series since its inception 3 years ago. I ran in 5th place for the first leg, lost some positions on the bike. The course featured numerous rolling hills, which presented added challenge but I managed to keep within range of 3 other du competitors. We kept ourselves in check by switching to the lead position of our mini cyclist pack then dropping back so as not to draft. After completing the center leg, I waited in transition for nearly a half hour (hence, the title) for teammate. She complained about 8 minutes but I endured more than 3 times that. However, when the dust cleared, I finished 2nd to Paul Marmaro, last year's series du elite champion. This is my year.

Team agenda - Triathlon:
Done as relay, since you all know I am aquatically challenged. Originally, JG was supposed to swim but she sustained a severe injury requiring surgery & had to sit out the Miami Beach event & worse, the championship; she is recovering well. Teammate JJ did double duty (swam & cycled) but had not fully recovered from our last event. Like Xena, the warrior princess, she competed while injured. This justified that long wait, but held me up from a great time. After taking her chip, I ran to complete both the du & tri relay.

Results:
As far as the championship race, I received 2nd place as an individual in the du & the team (Du Tri Harder), ditto in the co-ed relay division. No other athlete endured what I did nor qualified to be this year's duathlon elite series champion. Unfortunately, I was informed 2 days prior to event that no series award will be offered for relays. Although we have no tangible prize, we are the triathlon co-ed series champs. We would've accumulated the appropriate points to take the title but we were deprived of trophies. Fortunately, you can't take away from our performance.

Honorable mention

JJ plans to keep commitment to compete as member of Du Tri Harder at escape to Miami triathlon, despite her injuries. Guerrera verdadera!
3 of 4 teammates competed in bikila's autumn classic 5 miler:
JM, runner associated with Du tri harder, won the race!
LD, member of this year's 4 person marathon relay in palm beach won the female master title.
CC, member of this year's 4 person marathon relay in palm beach placed fifth in the age category.
CM, a member of this year's 4 person marathon relay in palm beach, did not compete but is in training.

Win some, lose some

Hello fellow runners & fans of the bellrunning blog site. This weekend, both races were timed by split second timing and I had the chance to capture the master title twice. Unfortunately, regarding the master's division, the title applied to the events in that order.

Saturday agenda-sickle cell 5k

The major sponsor was runner's depot, therefore the representation from that club would be high. At first, I felt i'd be lucky just to place (so many were in front). As the race progressed, I advanced positions until it came to a battle between me & their 2nd best master runner (AN). Their best one (TN) placed in the top 3 overall slot. AN came prepared to run, evidenced by the fact that he ran mucher faster than last time. By mile 2, I had no idea where I was so I had to slow down a bit to follow AN but he asked me, "do we turn right here?" Great! He's lost too. The timing director yelled at us for going off course (longer) saying that the course was well marked, not realizing that some jerk(s) switched the sign & that no volunteers were present to help. Within mile 2, as soon as could recognize where I was, I took off, back to my pace. Thanks to TN, I won the master title despite almost getting lost on the course following AN. I thrwarted his efforts to get revenge by winning the master again, but like the terminator, he'll be back!
This falls under win some.

Sunday agenda-dunn's run

This event offered 2 choices- 5 miler & 5k;I chose the latter. I catorgorize this race as a major league event, meaning most runners would be here & the cream of the crop (fast &/or well known) would be a part. I wanted to do a race (minor league, since it is an inaugural) closer to home but I am now a member of Premier running (, soccer & tri) race team & we had high representation. Because of the long drive up & having difficulty finding the starting point, I struggled in the first mile somewhat but managed to match the 1 mile split of sickle 5k. Toward mile 2 was the battle of the masters; another master pack with one being a teammate. I would be content to let him win if I could not keep up but after mile 2, he fell back & I struggled to keep pace with the other (unattached). Remember the title. As I approached the bridge, the gap widened & like a thief in the night, there went the title. Although a mere 6 seconds, in the running world, that's a long ways away. I fell to age group & my time, although 12 seconds slower than previous day, dominated that division. My partner was also content with his age group victory. The trophies for the master & 1st age group were the same, just not the prestige; less than that was a medal. This was an out race, no back. Plus is that it's straight forward. Minus, is that you have to get bussed back or run/walk back.
Failure to win the master title falls under lose some.

Honorable mention

Gary, an owner of premier running, also won his age group.
I was 5th overall & under 19 minutes in both events.
Picture is me winning the master title.

Cupid & Stupid

This blog was ported over from bellrunning.blogspot.com:

This title is derived from the ever popular cliche, "hindsight is 20/20". Stupid refers to a questionable decision after the fact and cupid indicates a wonderful occurrence.

Saturday agenda- publix family fitness weekend duathlon & triathlon

Ever since its inception in 2004, I have competed in the duathlon series & had no intention of stopping this year nor will I next year. To appease fellow athletes, I decided to form a team (Du Tri Harder) for the triathlon so that they may enjoy the benefits of the event & have a chance to become champions & walk away with hardware (awards). I say this because I have already committed to the south Florida triathlon series (sfts, which is still in progress) & the key Biscayne triology series (repeat champs) with team Triple Teem, featuring a teammate (EW) who has, thus far, lasted nearly 2 seasons with me. I have no plans on cutting or replacing (unless requested or by injury) a fellow teammate, especially within in season. A smart coach or team captain knows that you don't fix what aint broke (would be stupid);we have a good combination (cupid). Unfortunately, the swimmer (JG) of this team got injured so the cyclist (JJ) assumed two roles while I would run.

After completing the first run of the duathlon (5th overall) and the bike in decent time, I returned to transition with a big decision to make on the fly. In race #2, I waited for the cyclist (perhaps struggling that day) to come in. The swimmer, healthy at the time, commented that I could've done the whole duathlon & still make it back in time for the handoff. When I reviewed the results, she was right. So, I decided to continue & completed the du, placing second in my category. As I ran through the finish & attempted to enter the transition, I was delayed by dumbfounded race official, squandering valuable time. When I met up with the cyclist, I was met with hostility because this time, she performed exceedingly well by actually training intensely and was in transition for quite a while. She had pushed so hard, she fell off bike & injured herself & I could see that as I was trying to reach for the chip. However, the discouraging words (stupid) did not help for team morale & also squandered more valuable time (stupid) as she did not make chip available immediately. Now, I have to worry about all that happened & that further diminished by performance, which was up to that point, stellar. I finally completed the 5k for the team & after some time for both of us to recover, she later apologized for her actions & has been forgiven. My decision yesterday (stupid) was based on the past performances of the first two relays, in which she did not perform as expected & I lost time in my event. My dad said my choice really was not stupid since it was done based on past performance, a common technique utilized by coaches of major teams & until this event, has been effective but of course, there's that hindsight. What was disappointing for me is that it did not advance my position in the du & for the team, we could've been first (I admit she was right). What I failed to do was to take into account the external factors of the day- high wind & the fact that the run was totally in the sand (stupid). That, coupled with the race volunteer & the disparaging words made the second run unusually difficult. The end result, however, was as I expected. When I came into transition, I made an observation of how many teammates were waiting & calculated that we could place even if I continued (cupid); this came to pass as we placed 2nd in the co-ed division (cupid). The only real drawback (stupid)was relinquishing a slot and increasing the work load upon myself (I wound up doing a 10k equivalent final run). Fortunately, no team qualifies to take the series, the utimate goal! This race proved to many, including myself, that I am actually a human & capable of making mistakes. For this reason, I'll never cut a teammate for a mistake (a recommendation I have been given many times by many people) but rather consider that if it is habitual. I am wishing a speedy recovery to both teammates so that we may enjoy the fruits of victory in the championship coming up in two weeks.

Sunday agenda- shark shuffle 5k

Today was the only local race for runners only this weekend, therefore most people were fresh & ready to run. Mr. multsport athlete, however, was still a bit tight (for obvious reasons) and tired (quite a drive to get to race). Many saw this as an opportunity to knock me off my pedestal. There were nearly 300 in attendance & with my physical state, this was a fair assumption. When the buzzer when off, I was in thirty-ish position. Luckily, many started dropping like flies but to my dismay, I had 3 other master runners with me. Until mile 2, we were in a master pack, all vying for the elusive master title. Events of ayer began passing through my mind. I had to dig down deep & recall my resiliency. At this time, my mental state excelled & translated into my physical state. I was able to surpass my immediate threats by focusing on 2 athletes more than half my age. Finally, I made a sound decision (cupid)! That boosted the times of all involved as one of those kids came back to thank me for 'pulling' him in to his normal or possibly best time. We all placed in our respective divisions by breaking 19 minutes & beat out great master runners for the master title. Fortunately, they went three deep so a teammate of mine (DK of premier running) also captured a place in the master division. Since there were four us, obviously, one (different team) fell to age group but won that division. Many runners were as surprised as I that I could bounce back like that after yesterday. My surprise was moreso accomplishing my goals despite all odds rather than the fact that I was able to recover from a previous event. Remember, I am a multisport athlete!

All's well that ends well (cupid).

Family triathlon weekend

This blog was ported over from bellrunning.blogspot.com:
This weekend, multirace hosted 2 events at CB Smith park. Saturday was the reverse triathlon, actually designed for kids but also catered for novice adults. Sunday was the main event (sprint triathlon) & your performance determined your points in the series.

Saturday agenda: reverse tri

Why would someone like me, a top 10 percentile runner & decent average cyclist, be in an event for kids & novice adults? I answer that with a question, have you seen me swim? This was my rare opportunity to do an entire triathlon, granted another super sprint, all by myself; no teammates. Amazingly, a professional triathlete competed, and naturally, won this event, then caught up with his daughter & helped push her to a victory. Guess what? I was a distant second from him! Well, actually, I wasn't that far from him on the run. It was after that that the gap widened. By the time I headed toward the pool, he was heading for the finish line! Anyway, I managed to survive the 'swim' by a combination of a little swimming & a lot of wading through the water & finished first in my category, second overall.

Sunday agenda- sprint triathlon

I am still affected by the actions of the former cyclist. Teammates I had used before had other plans, so in order not to forfeit, I was stuck with the indubitable task of double duty. Yall know I am aquatically challenged so, therefore you are aware I am a land lover. A team of two was beaten by a team of three, 2 of which were men. Their swimmer was faster the our female swimmer. Their male cyclist concentrated on just that & got me by about 2 minutes, while I also had to contend with the run. My run time was faster than their fresh runner but wasn't enough to eliminate the deficit I faced. Nevertheless, we still found a way to place & added to our enormous lead in the series. Even though the series may be in the bag, my competitive nature does not permit me to be content with an average or worse performance; I will always try to win & hope my teammates feel the same way. I managed to do well on the bike but the fatigue factor decreased my ability to run. Fortunately, it was still the best of all the co-ed relays & I'll have to take satisfaction in that.

Honorable mention

Jonathan Mederos, teammate of duathlon relay champions, Du Tri Harder and replacement runner of defending co-ed relay champions, Triple Teem, won the race (the fall fling 5k) I was forced to miss due to this commitment. He also set his personal best of 16:44. I consider myself blessed to have him run on any team I am associated with. Congratulations!

2006-2007 running season starts off with a bang!

This blog was ported over from bellrunning.blogspot.com:

2006-2007 running season starts off with a bang! However, not with a gun as usual. I was caught off guard with an unconventional verbal command. The title refers to the end result of today's race.

Speaking of bangs, everyone needs pay homage to the victims of the terrorist attacks of a half decade ago & honor the troops who have served & are still serving to protect our freedom. I was able to run today because I was not at one of the death sites & because the armed forces are out there fighting for us Americans, heck, the world. Tomorrow is the 5 year anniversary of 9/11/01. We will not forget & may not forgive.

Yesterday was training day. I ran with the swimmer (EW) of the 2 time co-ed relay trilogy champions, Triple Teem. We did 6 miles. I followed that by skating 2 1/2 miles to peacock park for a fund raising event for stroke & heart disease called the heart walk. It was a non competitive 5k event. After I completed that, I skated back to where I parked my car. A cummulative of 14 miles of workout!

Sunday agenda-Haulover 5k

This event was hosted by PR racing, popular for attempts to revitalize running in Miami again & timed by multirace. I am fond of both organizations, so this was a good combo to start off the season. This was the first race I've done held at Haulover in this millenium. I remember doing a 5k there in nineteen ninty something. The most memorable was the day after my first overall victory! Today, only 2 people ultimately beat me out of 24o finishers. Although my time was not anything to write home about, placing in the top 3 was satisfying. I set out originally to take the master's title but anytime I can do better, I will. The weather seemed cooler than the norm at start but the humidity was sweltering. As the race progressed, both were equally hot.

Vacation time is over, get out there & run! See you at the races.

Old newcomer or new oldcomer?

I tried logging on to bellrunning.blogspot.com when I was asked if I wanted blogspot or beta blogspot. I selected the former then decided, why not try the other. Little did I know that it was the same as starting from scratch. I had to go through even more steps to set this one up. Since there are promises that this one is better (more features), here I am! It is much easier. Check out both blogs for complete info on me.
